  1. Bassitt's had a great start to the season.
  2. Too close to overturn, but this is MLB, so who the f knows.
  3. At least the Jays worked the pitch count up in that inning. Man, what a helpless feeling it must be to be facing another team's ace and having Kirk on the bases. The Jays need multiple hits in order to score anyway, but definitely when Kirk is the lead runner.
  4. Wow Roden crushed that one. Great to see some exit velo with him.
  5. 104.4 mph double by Roden followed by some good base running. All we had to do was call him out.
  6. Barger about to go 3-4 with 3 opposite field singles averaging 89 mph.
  7. Yeah I think Clase is an interesting prospect. Not sure there's a high probability of him panning out, but there's power + speed + CF in his profile, and he's still young. That's far more intriguing as a lotto ticket than the 25-26 year old platoon bats in the system. Unfortunately as you said he's someone with maybe some untapped power potential coming into an organization that probably prefers the slap hitting profile he's shown in AAA this season, so not sure if it's the best fit for him to reach his offensive ceiling.
  8. He's been on the 40 man roster for what feels like 10 years and he still has an option remaining, so yeah he was probably like "I'm getting MLB money for as long as I can get it".
  9. Alan Roden's statcast page right now is disgusting. Ranks between 1-8 percentile in xwOBA, xBA, xSLG, Avg EV, barrel %, hard hit %, and LA sweet spot. On top of well below average bat speed. It's still very early, and he's obviously getting his first taste of the big leagues, but he's not young, and I believe there were concerns about a lot of those things (quality of contact) in the minors. Wagner hasn't been quite as bad from a statcast standpoint, but still pretty bad. If the Jays are still in it at the deadline then I think they probably need 2 bats, one at 3B (definitely) and another at DH/OF (unless Roden turns things around).
  10. The Easton Lucas 30 for 30 put on hold for now.
  11. Yeah there's a real possibility Scherzer doesn't pitch again from the looks of it. Not sure if he'd consider trying to come out of the pen every few days but if that flares up every time he starts and gets to around 50 pitches or so, then the chances of him starting again seem really low. (B)Easton Lucas being this year's Bowden Francis went from a nice outcome to a necessity at this point. There really isn't much dependable SP depth otherwise.
  12. Bad lineup + Lucas on the mound part III. Too bad the Jays aren't facing the other team's best SP this time around.
  13. From Bo(o)b Nigtengale's most recent column: There were supposed to be at least two or three teams who made larger offers to Burnes before he decided to stay home and sign with the Diamondbacks. Well, as it turns out, no one made a higher offer to Burnes. The Orioles stopped at $180 million. The Blue Jays offer was not only low, but was 75% deferred, which Burnes never took seriously. The San Francisco Giants’ pursuit of Burnes stopped before it really got started. “This," Burnes says, “was by far the best offer that we had.” Seems like their interest in Soto and Alonso was legitimate, but interest in Burnes and Bregman was fabricated, at least based on Nigtengale's report.
  14. Yeah it's clear 2023 is this FO's ideal type of team, for better or worse, so we just have to hope this boring/frustrating vision pays off.
  15. Once again a first place team hitting nothing but singles.
  16. Barnes coming in next inning. That's reassuring.
  17. Franchise crippling might be an hyperbolic, but that Vlad contract is going to hurt really badly.
  18. The 2015 Royals without the elite bullpen and base running. I mean, maybe it will work, but it makes for some really unwatchable baseball. Unless you enjoy singles.
  19. Low baseball IQ, worst baserunning in the league, bad defender at the easiest position in the sport. Ed Rogers lost his damn mind.
  20. Yeah there's no perfect answer in house. You can at least dream a little bit on Barger's exit velocity, hard hit rate, barrel rate, etc. The upside on Wagner in particular seems very low with a medium sized floor due to lack of position, and Roden will depend on how much power he can eventually generate, but either way they are too similar in profile. Adding a bit more volatility (lower floor) but with power you can dream on a bit seems like a better solution for this lineup. Ultimately the chances of something better than a 2 WAR player in any of those scenarios is probably small.
  21. I like how Santander gets an ovation and a tip of the cap, while Sportsnet is busy showing a replay of Vlad running to 1B while this is going on.
  22. I think the team might have been better off with Barger over one of those 2. Barger has a skillset that the org does not like (high K's) but it's what the team actually needs more of (power, high exit velo). The Jays have a whole bunch of players who hit line drives and make contact, but it's not optimal if 90% of the lineup has that skillset. You need more diversity. That's why when they rested Vlad that day, you pretty much had to hope for a Tony HR, otherwise it was "pray for enough singles to get runs across". Varsho might be an average-ish hitter, but he's a much needed piece to this lineup just for the off chance he can pull one out of the park.
  23. I'm rooting for Nimmala but he's 19 in A+ with a lot of swing and miss in his profile. He's far from a sure thing, though he does have a high ceiling if he pans out. I don't think he'd even be a consideration in any discussions about whether to bring Bo back or not. If he was in AA or AAA, then that would be different as you could see a reasonable path for him to reach the bigs in 2026, but at his current rate/age he's probably a 2027-28 candidate depending on how he handles each level. I tend to agree that whoever signs Bo, the Jays or otherwise, is going to regret it. Vlad at least has a superstar offensive ceiling. Bo is closer to a 3-4 WAR talent, which is very good, but not someone I'd want to commit 10/300 to, especially with his offensive profile. Then again I didn't think Vlad should have gotten anywhere near $500M and here we are, so it's clearly not up to my tastes.
