  1. Time for the BABIP to go in the Jays favor. Take the lead here and don't look back. (hitting it over the fence every now and then would help)
  2. 4-5-6 hitters over the last 2 seasons have wRC+'s of 90, 95, and 100 respectively. I know this team loves service time and veterans, but at some point they probably need to just take a chance and put Wagner and/or Roden higher in the lineup and live with the consequences.
  3. I'm convinced, Wagner starts at 3B.
  4. The Jays real #1 starter on the mound tonight.
  5. Today's lineup: SS Bo 1B Vlad DH Santander 2B Gimenez CA Kirk RF Springer 3B Wagner CF Lukes LF Roden I guess the team doesn't want to insult Springer so much by dropping him below 6th, which causes 3 LHB in a row from 7-9. Of course the Jays have RHB options off the bench in case the O's bring in a LHP in relief to face that part of the lineup, but the RHB on the bench are Schneider (50 wRC+ against LHP in 2024), Clement (73 wRC+ against LHP in 2024), and Straw (68 wRC+ against LHP in his career, barely played in 2024). I guess the team can hope that Schneider develops into a bit of a lefty masher. The other two likely are what they are.
  6. Either streaming or broadcast (NBC, Fox, CBS). Manfred seems to want to avoid cable, which is smart given its decline. The Apple TV deal happened because the league took a haircut on their last media rights agreement with ESPN and used Apple to make up the difference. It was a bad decision, not because they went to a streaming service, but because no one has Apple TV, and no one is going to get it just for MLB games. Just have to suck it up for a couple more years, unfortunately. Last I read the ESPN rights are likely to be split between several different partners. Since the Jays are never on Sunday Night Baseball anyway it won't make a difference for Jays fans, but probably looking at Netflix getting the Home Run Derby, NBC getting Sunday Night Baseball, and stuff like that as an example. Unfortunately Apple doesn't have any issues with having Jays games, probably hoping for an increase in Canadian subs.
  7. I had to look this up because that amount of years scared the crap out of me. Turns out it's 3 more years and then a player option at $6M which if he declines turns into a $10M team option, so most likely 4 more years. Might end up being a solid RP but yeah not a good contract unless he morphs into a high leverage RP at some point. I don't think he's a SP long-term.
  8. It's possible it ends up that way, but there's still a very noticeable lack of power. Teams who finish in the top 5-10 in home runs every year are usually playoff teams, and there's a lot of non-power hitters in the lineup. Probably too many. In hindsight I kinda wish they went with Barger at 3B (bad defense and all) because you can at least dream on a bit of power developing (as long as Donnie is not allowed anywhere near him). A lineup with Clement, Kirk, Wagner, a washed Springer, Gimenez, and Roden (not a power guy) is too many spots without legit power. Varsho coming back at least helps in that regard.
  9. It's one game so pointless to draw any sort of conclusion over it, but Berrios is definitely someone I'd worry about, and this is dating back to last season. Feels like he's heading towards "league average innings eater" rather than something closer to a mid rotation starter, and that's not ideal. Again just one start but people have had this concern about him for a bit.
  10. Gotta take Berrios out here if you want a chance to win this, but it's also the first game so don't want to overwork the pen already.
  11. Emily touring the stadium has so far been the best part of this game. I miss spring training.
  12. Berrios has the option of opting out of 2/50 in two years. I wonder what he'll decide to do.
  13. That could have been a lot worse.
  14. Umpire calls a clear ball a strike on the first pitch to Bo. Going to be a frustrating umpiring day already.
  15. Vlad's greed saving the Jays from a huge mistake, so I hope he keeps that level of confidence in himself and has a great 2025. I suspect if Shapiro is sticking around then a Canadian will be playing first base next season, either Vlad or Naylor, but a lot will ride on the type of year Vlad has.
  16. Interesting to see how they do the lineup when Varsho gets back. My guess is if Roden or Wagner start out hot then they'll move into the lead off spot with Bo moving to 4th, but then how they move everyone else down will be the question.
  17. Gimenez batting cleanup is disgusting but all the right players are playing, so can’t complain too much. The Jays definitely seem all in on Roden.
  18. Yeah this org seems to value service time and tenure on the team very highly, so I doubt they bench Clement on Opening Day in favor or two rookies. Best chance of both Roden and Wagner being in the lineup is if Springer is playing CF. I guess we will see. My guess is Roden is on the bench today and starts Game 2.
  19. Transcribing Arden Zwelling on the JD Bunkis podcast: This is about 10 days after this quote from Davis Schneider:
  20. No idea if this guy is on the Hector Gomez/Carlos Baerga/Jon Morosi scale, or actually credible, but hope he's wrong here. I don't even care about the total value, a 14-15 year deal for a 1B who already resembles a DH at age 25 is insanity.
  21. The AL as a whole looks very mid on paper, especially with the Yankees and O's having injury issues. I would expect the Red Sox to take a leap forward this season, but aside from them it's hard to see a team that is going to dominate in the AL. Might be another year where the Wild Card teams are in the mid to high 80s. The Central teams again will have a huge advantage getting to beat up on the White Sox.
  22. The thing about Roden's age is that his first full pro season was at age 23 (2023). Realistically, another organization may have had him start 2024 in AAA and been a mid-season call up, which would have had him reach the Majors before completing two full pro seasons, but the Jays went slower with him for whatever reason. I tend to agree that Horwitz + ability to play LF is probably a fair outcome for him, and not a bad one for the Jays, but if he's as good of a baserunner as Keegan Matheson seems to think (I think he does the Pipeline bios) and can handle the OF corners at an average or better level, then there might be a bit of upside there. But yeah, if he's just a 2 WAR platoon player, then the Jays still come out ahead.
  23. Don't mind not taking Yarbrough, but Lovelady and Barnes? I'm convinced Shatkins would rather take a bullet to the chest than promote a homegrown relief prospect. I have no clue if Fluharty is good or not, but I'd much rather see him or someone similar get one of these last spots than the rolodex of waiver wire crap that this regime likes to cycle through. Otherwise I'm fine with Barger going to AAA as well. There was no way to get him playing time if Roden and Wagner were making it as well. Lukes is probably demoted once Varsho comes back, so he's there just to occupy space for now.
  24. No brainer. Catching is non existent in the farm system, and Kirk is still young with some offensive potential. After trading Moreno and losing Jansen, they pretty much had to commit to Kirk.
  25. If it's Springer in CF and Roden in either LF/RF, then that's fine too. It won't be great defensively regardless but as long as the right bats are in there, then that's all that matters.
