    Yeah, if I had to bet money, I'd say Vlad is WAY more likely to age like Hosmer than Freeman. It's not even close.

    If the Jays are going to slap hit their way to a post season berth then they need one of those runs. The difference in the WC3 race right now is entirely Cleveland going on a prolonged winning streak. I guess if you want to be optimistic then maybe you can think CLE is peaking too soon, and maybe the Jays can get one of those 5-6-7 game win streaks to gain some ground, but the rotation being an injured mess combined with the offense collectively hitting like Raimel Tapia doesn't bode well.

    Since May 1, Vlad has the 2nd worst WAR in MLB (-0.4) and 3rd worst wRC+ (73). He has a .312 xwOBA over that span. That's spanning 369 PA for Vlad. He's not going on a hot streak. He's broken and needs to be fixed, and that's not happening in one month. As mentioned before he's likely hurt and playing through it, but we won't know it until BNS or Keegan or whoever writes a "Vlad has been battling (insert injury) since the end of April" tweet sometime in October.

    Would have been nice if the Jays were a bit more aggressive sellers at the deadline (Springer, Sanchez, Straw, etc). Probably wouldn't have gotten more than a cup of coffee for any of them, but at least we'd get to see younger players get some burn, and it likely wouldn't have even hurt their recent run before tonight. Oh well.

    Just saw that Vlad fly out. That should have been in the 3rd deck. This dude is broken. Put him on the IL for the rest of the season and let Keys play 1B.

    Bieber hurt, and Straw playing everyday in a lineup that already includes Bateman, Gimenez, and the $500M man hitting like 1992 Otis Nixon. Bah Gawd, that's the grim reaper's music.

    Bieber's last 4 starts against Houston, Philly, Tampa, and the Yankees, he was 3-0 with a 2.96 ERA (3.62 FIP) in 24 innings. Really only one bad start in that string (against PHI). Even if it was smoke and mirrors in terms of stuff (haven't looked that part up), he's been a big reason for the Jays at least making things interesting. This is a big loss, with no one ready to step in.

    If I had to put money on it, I'd probably say the Jays are not making it, but let's see if they have a hot streak in them. Going 12-8 against the quality of teams they were facing the last 3 weeks was a great outcome, but they kinda need to have an 8-10 game winning streak now, or something like that, rather than winning 2/3 a lot. After 4+ months of playing like s***, there's still a lot of digging left to climb out of the hole they built for themselves, and they are running out of time. If one team ahead or directly behind them gets hot, then it's going to be a long shot (I'm looking at Cleveland based on schedule).

    Free agent 1B after the 2025 season with their current numbers: Pete Alonso: 142 wRC+ Munetaka Murkami: 141 wRC+ Josh Naylor: 104 wRC+ Ryan O'Hearn: 115 wRC+ Josh Bell: 107 wRC+ Paul Goldschmidt: 112 wRC+ When the Jays could have signed Josh Bell to replace 2026 Vlad and seen a marginal difference at best, that's sorta not good.

    Yeah the thing about the easy part of the schedule is that other teams will be looking at the Jays the same way. It’s really the battle of mediocrity. Unfortunately I think it has to come down to Vlad. If he has a final month of the season that resembles “playoff Vlad” then the Jays have a great shot. If he’s just a singles hitting sub-.700 OPS player like he’s been all season, then I’m really not sure where the Jays end up. Maybe they still find a way to sneak in but it will be a lot more difficult. The fact that Springer has been awful too is just such a big hole for the rest of the bats to try to compensate for.

    Not watching the game. Gameday had Little in the game. Fluharty at least made sense there. I guess all white LH relievers look the same to whoever handles the Gameday scoring.

    The Guardians schedule is just as easy down the stretch as the Jays, and both teams have offenses that have an average team exit velo of like 74 mph and have to hit 4 singles an inning to score one run in almost every game. The battle of the "death by a thousand paper cuts" offenses.

    They traded for him and absorbed $11M or so of his remaining contract two years ago coming off a wRC+ in the 70's in AAA (!) and when no other team in the sport would have taken him for anything above the minimum. I hope the Jays aren't crazy enough to pick up the option, but Atkins is the only GM on the planet who would value Straw at $8M a year, so I think it's closer to 50/50. It's getting to Sept/Oct 2025 IKF levels for me where I dread looking at the lineup and seeing Straw's name in there. Lukes stinks against LHP too but it's Yankee Stadium. Maybe he can run into one and hit a HR that would only be a HR in one stadium.

    If this team weasels its way into a playoff spot, they will make the 2023 offense look like the '98 Yankees by comparison. Death by a thousand paper cuts is not the approach that wins very often. Singles and bunting with no extra base hits or home runs is not fun to watch.

    When the Jays have a particular opinion on a player they generally stick to it. DS hit like Barry Bonds in 2023 and couldn't get a post season plate appearance that year, and has been used as a platoon bat ever since despite the splits saying otherwise. If the Jays think Cameron is a platoon bat, or only want to use him like one, then that's what they'll do. For better or worse. Good chance Daz isn't a big leaguer, but if Straw is the alternative, then there's really no excuse to not give Daz a chance given how he's done in the minors and given what the Jays needs are. They don't need more weak contact from one of the worst hitters in the sport. They need someone with pop, and maybe catch lightning in a bottle with someone they weren't expecting it get it from. But they obviously think differently.

    That’s the biggest factor. Straw can’t hit lefties. Never could. But he bats from the right side, makes contact, and is a vetrin, so JS will no question use him in a platoon next season (probably with Bateman). Then when injuries hit you have a 50-60 wRC+ player getting tons of plate appearances, including last night in the 9th inning of a close game, because the manager thinks that player is better than he actually is (or maybe blind 2025 loyalty). Honestly I wouldn’t want Straw back on a minor league contact just because of how JS would use him. Bringing him back for $8M on top of that would be insane.

    From 2022-25, Straw has been the 3rd worst hitter in baseball (wRC+), minimum 1500 plate appearances. JS thinks he’s actually good, so keeping him not only means allocating $8M to a bad player but it also carries excessive playing time risk. The Jays are much better off using Lukes as the 4th OF and using that Straw money elsewhere.

    If the Jays pick up Straw's option this winter, then baseball can lockout for an entire season for all I care. They need so much help offensively. Can't afford to keep running these types of bats out there. The 2025 magic no longer exists.
