    Wouldn't shock me if the Jays decide to go with stop gaps to replace Bautista and EE. Something like Santana at 1B/DH, Bruce in RF (it's almost happened already), for example. The free agent market isn't great and they want to avoid trading top prospects. Hard to picture what they'll do without using those two avenues. Maybe a Happ equivalent on offense if one is out there in free agency but I don't expect them to be on top free agents.

    That's where I stand. Given what RP's are worth now, let him rack up a s*** ton of saves and trade him for a haul. He'll have four years of control left at age 22-25 after 2016. One more good season and he should have a ton of value on the market. I don't think he's ever going to start a game. If that's the case, then maximizing his value might be more beneficial to the team than maximizing Storen's FA value, which really does nothing for the team.

    Yep. Sanchez pitched every 8th inning regardless of the situation because he was the "8th inning guy". I think it will be the same this year. Gibbons has already aped Ned Yost's lineup construction, might as well try for the pen. At least the latter has a chance to be effective.

    Let's be real, the team's best reliever will be pitching in the 7th inning this year. Regardless, I think most of the anger comes from Zeke making it and Tepera possibly getting a chance to face a glut of lefties because Gibbons doesn't know anything about statistics or sample size (Tepera has been hot garbage against lefties forever).

    Carrera was acquired by the Indians in 2010 and stayed in the org until 2013. So he has history with Shapkins. Didn't even notice that until I looked it up. I'm not sure if that figured into this decision at all.

    Would Carrera really have been claimed by other teams when OF's that are just as good if not way better than him are out there? That's a stretch.

    Cola will get most of the playing time at 1B, at least until he bombs enough to have Gibby lose faith in him (if that happens). As we've seen with some of the decisions here, Gibbons has a lot of say in the roster decisions, and obviously as manager he will set the lineup. Cola was the guy he trusted in the playoffs last year, and he'll do the same this year in all likelyhood. Sucks for Smoak but no way around it.

    Well, Tepera is probably gone once Estrada or Loup come back from injury. Leon is probably the other casualty in that scenario. So yeah, not a huge deal there. But Carrera's going to play a lot (injuries, off days, etc). He's going to hurt the team.

    Yeah, I'm not sure Storen was a QO candidate to begin with. As a closer it would have been at least a faint possibility if he had a crazy season, but other than David Robertson, has any reliever been given a QO? I'm sure Chapman will get one, but it seems reserved for the super elite. Seems pretty unlikely Storen would have fell into that category even with a 40 save season, but who knows.

    Yeah, it pains me to say this as a Shapiro fan, but he deserves the blame here. He could easily put his foot down and make Gibbons adapt to him, but he's doing the opposite. Let Gibby be Clint Hurdle and implement what the new regime wants. He'd probably do it, too. He seems open minded enough. But if you ask him what he wants to do, and then listen to him....f***.

    That thought actually crossed my mind, and I'd like to believe that's true, but didn't they give him a raise recently? They removed his stupid vesting options, or whatever those were called, but I believe he's locked up through 2017 now for more $. Would have made sense if he was a lame duck to just let him sink with his guys and then can him afterwards, but given how important 2016 is to this franchise, giving up even the tiniest bit of incremental value to make an inherited manager happy just makes no sense to me. The moment Pillar's name was mentioned as a lead off candidate, someone (Atkins/Shapiro) could have stepped in. Fine, they let that slide. But now this? It's scary to think they'll give Gibby the same freedom that AA gave him. It's a recipe for disaster.

    It's crazy. Gibbons would be begging for work if he was fired tomorrow. He's not some in-demand manager. If anything, he should be the one open to changing to fit the front office's philosophy, yet here they are catering to him. Insanity. I never thought I'd be asking for Eric Wedge to manage this team, but I think I'm on that bandwagon now.

    Yeah these moves reek of Gibbons. Carrera sucks and Tepera's performance last season was awful, and you know Gibby will use him when tough lefties are up despite zero evidence that he can get them out consistently. I'm honestly disappointed this front office is catering to Gibbons rather than the other way around.

    As much as I knock Gibbons, he does seem like the type who would be open minded enough to implement more analytics based strategies if he was asked to. Obviously sticking Pillar at lead off is what happens when you give him free reign, but in the grand scheme of things if he can implement the type of things that the front office wants, then maybe he could actually be a reasonable guy to keep around. AA gave him way too much freedom, and the derp that happened was the end result, but give him specific instructions and I think he will listen to management. Well, I guess I have no choice but to hope for that.

    Sounds like Estrada is going to start on the DL, so Leon probably makes the team as well, at least for a week.

    I remember they did a segment many months ago with John Smoltz and others where they basically ripped AA for using Sanchez (and Osuna) as a reliever rather than developing him as a SP in the minors. They've been pretty consistent in their praise of Sanchez's upside, whether I agree with it or not. Haven't seen the videos you referenced yet, though. Loving all the Jays material floating around.

    Rather have Biagini or Leon make the team than Delabar, and I've never even seen those two pitch before. Delabar's time is over. He never should have been tendered to begin with.

    Smoak would be my answer as well if I thought he'd get any playing time but he will be Cola's back up most likely. Power is there, walks are there, just need some BABIP magic.

    There's very little chance any team is going to carry Montero on their big league roster. He's practically a DH, at best 1B/emergency catcher, and hasn't hit at the big league level. I'd be very surprised if he doesn't pass waivers.
