    They offered Edwin 4/80 before free agency even began and were in on Fowler. Both would have cost picks. They may not want to lose a pick for Joey Bats, but they clearly don't mind losing one for the right players. In this case, both the players they were willing to lose one for decided to decline the offers.

    Revere scares me only because Gibbons would bat him lead-off. Other than that, I mean he might be able to bounce back offensively and be an adequate LF option (maybe a 1 WAR type) so it may not be an awful move in isolation, but yeah, I think I'd rather just start Pompey and hope he produces. The Royals could probably get a 3 WAR season out of Dyson even as a 4th OF, but they have 3 starting OF's and a bunch of 4th OF types. They'll have to make a trade of some sort. Dyson would be such a good fit, but if the Royals want an MLB talent, then it will be hard to find a match. You think they'll take Harold Ramirez? Doesn't strike out and hits for average....that's like a Royals prototype.

    Probably a combination of a mutual dislike between the FO/Jose, and the FO thinking they could replace Jose's wins for less money and keep a draft pick on top of that. Of course, if no other team signs Bautista, then things become dicey because the pick becomes pointless.

    I'd trade Osuna when he starts to get expensive. He shouldn't be untouchable at all. Young relievers don't always stay good for long.

    If Valbuena can play the outfield at even an average level, then he's a solid pick up since he can cover 3B in case Donaldson has to miss time. Good way to make up for lack of depth is getting players who can cover multiple spots. He doesn't have much sample in the OF, though.

    Since his ST rant.... - Got punched in the face and became a meme for life. - Had two separate stints on the DL. - Had his worst offensive and defensive seasons since his breakout. - Can't find a team willing to sign him as a free agent. Dude's body is is going to look like 2016 Sandoval's with all the humble pie he's been eating.

    In that same vein, how about Josh Harrison? Pirates apparently want to move him. The Jays need a 2B when Travis misses half the year, and Harrison has played some OF, 3B, etc, as well. Could be a versatile option.

    The qualifying offer is killing Jose's value. If the Jays move on, then he'll be settling for a short deal somewhere else.

    I don't know. They were willing to lose a pick for Fowler. Sure they'll gladly take 3 picks in the 1st round, but if Bautista is signable and clearly the best player they can realistically get within budget, then they might be willing to sacrifice one of those picks as long as the terms make sense. He's still a projected 3 war player next season so the upgrade would be there. Of course, there might be bad blood on both sides, and I could be Jose being the type whose ego would get in the way of certain things. I still see it happening if they can't sign/trade for a better alternative.

    Why? Hits rhp, average defender in the outfield, won't cost much for what he is. Seems like a solid fit. Can't be hung up on strike outs when there is a talent deficiency. He fills a need.

    Wouldn't surprise me. Although if they signed Revere and Moss instead, then I would have guessed right on four free agents in the prediction thread (already got Pearce and Morales). Not that I find that important or anything.........

    The Royals have Gordon, Cain, and Soler in the outfield. Can't imagine it would take a bunch to get Dyson but probably at least one good prospect. Or maybe they'd want MLB help, in which case the Jays might be a bad trading partner. I just want Dyson on the team. Fits the Jays needs and is mad underrated. There has to be a way.

    I like how the Jays offered Edwin a contract that apparently no other team is willing to give him a month later and that was an example of the Jays being cheap. Oh wait, they knew he'd turn it down, so they offered him $20 f***ing million a year to a DH in his mid-30's as a token offer. Sounds about right. The other argument is the Jays need to worry about short-term....but that was the whole point of signing Morales and Pearce. Those guys are in their 30's. They surely were not signed for some long-term plan. You can disagree with signing them from a talent standpoint, but the goal is exactly the same. Free agents are free to sign wherever they want. Some go for the money, some go for the destination, some go for the environment, some go for the chance to win, etc. The Jays made offers to two key free agents and one was beaten substantially (Fowler) and we'll see with the other one (EE). That's free agency. If you don't get your guy at the price you want, then you move on. That's what happened here.

    Exactly. This is year 2 of the Shapiro regime, and they still don't have a single pitching prospect in AAA. They only have one prospect pegged to start in AAA at all and that's Tellez. When you have an old roster and nothing close in the farm system, it's going to be hard to sustain a winning roster. The Jays still have a chance since the pitching projects to be pretty good and they still have Donaldson and a few others who should provide solid value, but expecting them to not skip a beat based on the way the roster was constructed was foolish. Shapiro is essentially trying to prolong the playoff appearances as much as he can without doubling down on the old regime's short-term mindset. It worked in 2016. Still enough time to fix holes and get it to work in 2017.

    They also made a 4/80 offer to Edwin which was turned down, and a 4/60 offer to Fowler which was apparently trumped big time by the Cardinals. Lots of off-season to go. Although, I get a sense the buzz around the Jays in the next few months will resemble the Sportsnet comment section, and that's going to be mad annoying.
