A NL team would have to play him in the OF to get his bat in the lineup. Not sure that's a good idea for the team or for him. The AL makes way more sense. The Yankees would be the worst case scenario for us. I'd rather he go to Houston who is already a super power. I could see Texas as an option for him as well given how much they can spend plus history with Darvish. I'd be shocked if he goes to the NL. If he was just a pitcher I would have said the Dodgers, but he wants to bat and pitch, so I don't see the NL as a fit.

I’m also predicting the Yankees but f*** it I think the Jays have a chance here. Ohtani seems like a strange dude who just loves baseball. If he was in it for the money he would have gotten paid in Japan for another year or two and then come over. Instead he chose to come over in order to make peanuts and is telling teams to sell him on their org. Weird dudes do weird things. I’m not expecting it to happen so I won’t be disappointed if it doesn’t but I disagree with people saying there is no chance. This is a unique and weird enough situation to give them at least a small chance.

Ohtani seems like he only cares about baseball related stuff. The location will play a factor, but based on what his agent is asking for, he wants an org that will sincerely try to develop him as a two way player and is up to date on all facets of player development.

That's why Manfred probably wants the juiced balls and bat flips to continue. The outrage over Bautista in 2015 was the best thing to happen to baseball because it indirectly exposed the "old white man's game" section of baseball that needs to die out in order for the sport to grow. The Yankees being young and good, while annoying to Jays fans, is probably good for the game as well since they can market a NY star a lot easier. It will be interesting to see how the major sports line up 10-20 years from now. Right now football and basketball have the leg up, but football has declined and concussions might force the next generation to choose other spots in high school and college. Manfred needs to stop fiddling around with time clocks and automatic IBB's, and focus on marketing the sport and its players a lot better.

Yeah if it's not injury related I'd be surprised. He has some pretty decent projections. If he can play the infield even a little bit, he'll have value.

Josh Harrison makes a lot of sense since he can play (a very good) 2b and 3b, plus has played some outfield. Probably a decent stop gap in 2019 when JD leaves as well. Not a big sample at short for him, but chances are Goins will be the back up there anyway just because we can't have nice things. The Pirates would trade anyone if it saved them 25 cents, and $10m is significant enough for them to possibly make a move. Not sure what they'd want in return though.

This is one of the rare situations where the Jays may have had a better shot if Ohtani was an actual free agent. They still wouldn't have outbid LA or NY probably, but they could have if they wanted to. Now it is purely up to the player. Jays have a chance if they can sell the org as being one that is best for Ohtani's future, but other teams can and will do the same thing. I don't think a couple of mil will be a difference maker. If this guy cared about the money he could have made money in Japan for another year or two and came over and gotten his 9 figure contract in the U.S. when he turned 25. Jays are just going to have to sell the player development dept and city as best they can. Other than that it's out of their control.

That would be the smart route. There are two players I always bring up that I won’t mention by name to avoid Brownie being triggered, but those two plus others who are blocked on other teams or coming off down seasons should be explored. There has to be a middle ground between overpaying for Nunez and counting on Ryan Goins again.

Ohtani and Stanton are holding everything up. Might have to wait a few weeks before anything major happens. The free agent market being absolute dog s*** is likely a factor as well.

Is it confirmed how much the Jays have to spend? I've read 50k and over $1m (after the Lane Thomas trade). That's a pretty substantial difference. I'm sure if Ohtani expressed interest in signing with the Jays, Shatkins would start trading for cap money so fast our heads would spin, but still having at least over a mil to start with is better than 50k.

Ohtani making practically nothing and playing on a Yankees team that is already young and loaded, with enough money next year to hit the free agent jackpot, is a scary thought. That's my one fear with him. If he doesn't sign with the Jays, go anywhere except New York or Boston. Don't care where.

Yeah, the Jays have openings in LF and RF, plus can tell Morales to f*** off and eat up the rest of the contract if they had to in order to free up the DH spot (the excess value from Ohtani would easily make up for $23m in sunk cost by dumping Kendrys). Tell him he can play some outfield, some DH, and have a rotation spot. Have Koehler or whoever the sixth starter is get some starts here and there to give Ohtani more rest during the season. Then you can sell the high performance dept, the country, etc. If Ohtani is a liberal, then use that trump card (pun intended). Just do whatever the hell it takes as long as it doesn't break any rules. Atkins seems confident that they can at least make a strong case, so who knows. Maybe just wishful thinking in the end, but if Ohtani's personality is as unique as they say it is, then every team probably has a shot. If he decides not to play for the Jays, then as long as he's not in the AL East, I'll be fine with it.

To be fair to the Braves, AA was likely going to trade 75% of the prospects they lost anyway. Just now they lose them for nothing instead of getting overpriced 30 somethings in return. /throwing shade at Alex. But seriously, that is a stiff penalty, and I agree it was with Ohtani in mind. I guess unless they implement an international draft, this type of stuff was bound to happen. Braves just got caught.

Well clearly whatever he wants that's legally allowed. I'm not expecting Shatkins to promise him a deed to a house or something. Ex. Tell him he's a full time DH, tell Kendrys to f*** off, and use an extra starter so that Ohtani can get additional rest during the season. Things like that. I'm sure every team will offer him that, but maybe those big words that Shatkins uses to illustrate a point can convince him.

Keeping him because they like him and keeping him because they fear someone will take him are two different things. I'm saying they didn't have to fear the latter. History and common sense kind of makes that obvious. I'm sure teams would have taken a chance with Tellez if all they had to do was keep him on the 40 man, but the 25 man roster all season coming off the year he had? No way. Established first baseman with big league success are having trouble getting jobs, you think some team would have started Tellez everyday in the bigs in 2018 or kept him on the roster all season when he can't play a position? Yeah, no. He's young enough to improve so I have no issues keeping him around, I'm just saying the chances of another team taking him were slim, and keeping him all season were even slimmer.

A DH/1B with no versatility, no defensive value, coming off a dreadful season where he displayed no power and couldn't hit lefties. I mean I guess it's possible he could have been picked up, but I think more likely Shatkins probably liked him enough to hold on to him.

I don't see the point in protecting Tellez. No one was going to take him, and even in the event someone did, the chances of him sticking when his only position is DH was pretty slim.

Damn if the Yankees get Ohtani, that is going to suck.

They should be patient this winter with the hitting market. Teams will probably want to save money for next year's loaded free agent class, and the market for no-D power hitters has crashed the past two years. If they wait until his price drops, then they might get a decent deal out of it.

IF Gift causes the Jays to get rid of Goins, then he really would be a gift. I doubt it though.

The Jays traded a cheap asset two years ago so they could pay $4m to Jesse Chavez to serve as a swing man. I think they’ll bring Koehler back. The SP market is trash.

Jansen, McGuire, Pannone, and Greene would be my guess. I'd be surprised if we didn't see at least one trade today.

Yeah I don't see it either. Cashman is running the team like a mid market GM. He's not going to waste his money on Cobb when he can wait a year and put it towards Machado and a much better free agent class. He will probably end up signing CC to a one year deal.
