"Balelo's memo asks for a team to evaluate Ohtani's talent as a pitcher and as a hitter; to explain its player development, medical training and player performance philosophies and facilities; to describe its minor league and spring training facilities; to detail resources for Ohtani's cultural assimilation into the team's city; to demonstrate a vision for how Ohtani could integrate into the team's organization; and to tell Ohtani why the team is a desirable place to play." 8 days later, he narrows his teams down to 7. Only 2 of those 7 have any recent track record of good player development (LAD, Cubs), and only 2 of those 7 are not in the west coast. In other words, what the hell was the point of sending the memo? I mean, Ohtani could have told each team to get on their knees and bark like a dog, and they would have done it, so maybe he got off on so many teams courting him, but that seemed like a giant waste of time and resources if he knew he preferred the west coast and didn't particularly care about whether the team was good, had a history of good player development, etc.

More people said the Yankees were going to sign him, and it turns out he wanted a team that was the exact opposite. In other words, no one had a f'n clue what he was going to do. He never specified which location he preferred, or what type of team he wanted to sign with, etc. You could have been a Twins fan and said there was a chance and you wouldn't have been wrong.

Pick the NL, Ohtani. If the Jays want to aim for the 2nd WC in 2018, then the Mariners getting him would hurt the Jays chances.

Nice that the Yankees are out. If not the Jays, then go to the NL, and I'll be happy, and we can finally move on to an actual off-season.

Casuals, at least the idiots on Twitter and Sportsnet, hate Shatkins, so they will mourn the loss of anything that was here before those two took over. Stupidity is a dangerous thing, and unfortunately casual Toronto sports fans fit that description. Oh well, as long as those mouth breathers take their asses to the games, I guess that's all that matters.

Woodman had a 38% K% in low A and had a 98 wRC+ despite a BABIP a shade under .400. At age 22, about to turn 23. Damn, what an awful draft pick that turned out to be, but good way to leverage it into something potentially useful.

All he has to be is replacement level and he’s an upgrade on Goins. We got him for a guy who can’t make contact in A ball at age 22. It’s a pretty damn good risk to take even if Diaz is a bust.

I was seriously expecting Goins to be one of those s***** players who inexplicably stays in an organization for a long ass time. Even smart front offices can fall in love with a scrub. Thankfully that was not the case here. I wouldn't mind bringing Koehler back on a cheaper deal, but Goins can GTFO and stay there.

I'm surprised the Jays haven't traded for any international money, aside from Lane Thomas a few months ago. Still not sure how much they have as some say 50k and others say one million, but either way they could afford to add a bit more.

The Marlins got over $100m in value out of Stanton's first three years of his 13 year deal, and only paid him $30m combined over that span. Even if they throw in $45m to get rid of him, they still would have made out with a surplus, and gotten out of a contract that will surely look like s*** in a couple of years (if it doesn't already). This is the perfect time to sell on him. Marlins got lucky he won the MVP and had the year that he did.

Stanton has a NTC and close to $300m left on his contract. Statkins wouldn't go near that contract, and Stanton wouldn't waive his NTC for Toronto. The bigger question if Stanton goes to SF is how desperate does that make the Cardinals? Desperate enough to overpay for JD?

I would be fine with him as a 5th or 6th starter. Looks like his velocity stayed the same, GB% stayed the same, fewer line drives, less hard contact/more soft contact, but just gave up an unusual amount of home runs. Seems like a pretty solid buy low option. With two years of control left, and 1/5.7 as the projected salary, he would be a pretty decent pick up if it cost nothing.

The Jays did see a spike in ticket sales after the 2012 off season due to all the big expensive names. Hype sells in Toronto, but only to a certain point. Regardless, I don't even think Nick Markakis' mother would buy a ticket to see her son play in Toronto, much less casual Jays fans. This isn't 2008.

Damn, I recall Davidi mentioning at the trade deadline that the Jays had conversations about Markakis. Now Trollosi says it. Davidi at the deadline mentioned Lowrie and Grichuk as well. I'd be ok with circling back on those two, but hard pass on Markakis.

Goins will be on the 25 man roster on opening day 2018, 2019, and 2020. I'm sure of that. He might even get extended beyond that. Two different regimes, including a sabermetric one, values him despite everything aside from two months in 2015 telling us that he is absolute s***. I don't understand it, but he'll be a Jay for life. We just have to come to grips with it.

Gyorko, Reyes, and another prospect, and that's something I can get behind. I like Gyorko as a replacement for JD, controllable and is a decent enough player (2+ WAR), but beyond him there better be some young players with some upside.

After what I read about Tony Kemp and how he changed his swing in the minors, I wouldn't rule out the Astros. That team develops talent like crazy, and would be a good place for Ohtani to make adjustments. From a player development standpoint, they will be hard to top.

Man, that trade would be the ultimate Gord Ash move. Might keep the team around the same projected win total in 2018, give or take, but doesn't add any young talent.
