It's interesting because other than Hoffman and Dominguez, the rest of the pen (that are healthy) has no track record. Varland has been good this season (recent stretch aside) but that's it. Fisher is a rookie. Nance is in his mid-30's and didn't do much prior to this season. Yariel was a starter last season. Little had a -0.5 WAR for his career coming into this season. Fluharty and Schultz are rookies. And so on. You can make the argument that Schneider's blind faith in Hoffman is actually justified because at least there's a track record of elite performance there, even if it was only a couple of seasons. The rest is really hit or miss. Bullpens are volatile to begin with but relievers with no real track record just adds to it.
As much grief as Schneider gets, he's been put in a tough situation here with the pen. Some of it is his own doing with the bullpen usage (or over usage), which may have contributed a bit to the meltdowns recently, but beyond that, there's a bunch of unproven arms that he has to trust because he has no choice. Garcia's injury is really underrated as far as significance, that was a huge blow.
