  1. I don't think this team has a 2025 type of run in them (those types of "everything goes right" runs don't happen often) but confident in securing a Wild Card spot, yes. A lot will depend on health, obviously. Especially to the rotation. They also need another top of the order bat. Looking at the lineup, and assuming Barger comes back strong at some point, the one obvious need is LF. Lukes is what he is, Sanchez is a platoon bat at best, and DS may or may not be playable depending on which type of hitter he decides to be in any given year. Maybe Pinango becomes that guy but I don't think he'll get the playing time to determine that. The AL looks very mediocre this season so not getting a WC spot at a minimum would be disappointing.
  2. The Cardinals are on the verge of starting the season 18-13. Just noticed that their lineup today has 8 players that they drafted (Wetherholt, Burleson, Walker, Gorman, Winn, Church, Pages, Scott) and one they signed as an international FA (Herrera). Nootbaar is on the IL and he was also drafted by the Cardinals. If they are actually a good team (remains to be seen) then would be pretty cool to see an entire homegrown lineup out there playing competitive ball all season.
  3. Keep your head above water until healthy bodies return. Starting 14-16 is not great but given all the injuries that's not a terrible spot to be in, especially given how mediocre the AL looks this season (so far).
  4. Valenzuela's wRC+ went from 8 to 59 after today.
  5. Glad Eloy is gone and Pinango getting some run against RHP.
  6. Varland will definitely be available today. JS had Hoffman pitching 4 in 5 days on five separate occasions in 2025. I don't think that's going to deter how JS uses the pen. It probably should (overuse might be a reason for Hoffman's issues last season, at least partly), but it won't be.
  7. Yeah seriously, the lineups have been ass with all the injuries. Then you have Lukes with vertigo getting plate appearances for some reason, Heineman/Valenzuela being the catching tandem for the foreseeable future, Okamoto coming over from Japan (so adjusting to the bigs), Sosa/Eloy being depth pieces, etc. Besides that, the actual MLB talent not on the IL (Vlad, Gimenez, Varsho, Clement, Sanchez) are all performing within reasonable levels. Anyone expecting Popkins to turn one of us into big league hitters is going to be disappointed.
  8. Yeah if he's a league average bat in his first month of MLB ball where there's clearly an adjustment period, then that's hopefully a good sign. At least with the bat. Not sure on the defense.
  9. That opening weekend sweep of the A's (where they easily could have lost 2 of 3) was huge. Since that sweep, the Jays have the 3rd worst record in the league (PHI/NYM tied for 1st at 7-16, the Jays at 7-15). It has been pretty bad.
  10. Phillies are 8-18 with a -53 run differential. Currently on a 10 game losing streak. Doubling down on that aging core and then just adding Adolis Garcia to the outfield thinking that would fix everything certainly hasn’t aged well. Losing the World Series in 2022 and then losing in the NLCS to the most mediocre team imaginable looks like their only shot with that group. Not sure how they fix it. There’s still a lot of time to turns things around this season and maybe they do but sure feels like the end of the road for that core group. Lots of money and years left on most of those players as well.
  11. Lauer about to go into a rage (of public complaining).
  12. I think Lauer was very justified in being upset about being pulled from the rotation last season when he was essentially the best SP on the team for about 10-12 straight starts. All the whining after that is obnoxious, though. He's not good enough to be worth that headache. He's hunting for a good contract after this season while having below average stuff and a FB in the high 80's. It's not going to happen, but delusion + ego can be dangerous.
  13. That was my thought as well. The difference between him and Corbin is practically nothing, and Corbin (given his age) probably won't care if he's a swing man after other pitchers get healthy, whereas Lauer will publicly complain about every perceived slight he can think of. The juice isn't worth the squeeze with Lauer once Yesavage, Berrios, and Bieber are back. Whether anyone will trade for him given his salary is a different story. Seems more likely to be a DFA candidate, but maybe the Jays get lucky and someone takes his money.
  14. The bench when everyone is healthy is going to be Straw/DS/Lukes. Sosa isn’t good enough to care about the years of control, and Eloy is a lottery ticket with no value outside of his bat (which may or may not even be good). If they fixed Eloy then it becomes a tougher decision but I don’t think there will be a large enough sample size to determine that by the time they have to decide on roster moves.
  15. Hoffman since May of 2025: -1.0 WAR 62.0 IP 5.66 ERA/5.58 FIP 16 HR allowed 4.6 BB/9 A world where Hoffman never fails his Baltimore physical sounds like the most peaceful existence.
  16. My theory of Jeff Hoffman being a terrorist still stands.
  17. What Eric Lauer, and only Eric Lauer, sees when he looks in the mirror:
  18. Yeah the Padres selling at nearly $4b despite having no local TV deal (I believe their local rights are owned by MLB Now) hurts the owners negotiating power significantly. The biggest reason the owners want a cap is not for competitive balance (they probably don't even care about that) but rather for increased franchise values. Definitely something the MLBPA will be using on their end.
  19. The AL looks like 15 mediocre teams. Some of them will break from the pack but it doesn’t have any great teams. Too early to panic, but so far this season has not been fun. It might partly be because of how 2025 ended, I have a sense of numbness with the Jays now. Losses don’t really bother me like they would have in years past. Maybe Jeff Hoffman’s gopher ball-itis ripped part of my spirit away.
  20. If the playoffs started today, then the Rays, Twins, A's, Guardians, Pirates, Reds, and D-Backs would all be in. Would be funny to see something like that happen right before the owners are going to argue that competing without a salary cap is impossible for smaller market/budget teams, but if even half of those teams are still standing by October then I'd be surprised.
  21. Can someone explain why Sosa is starting the last 2 games at 2B? He's a career -5 OAA/-17 DRS at 2B and a career 74 wRC+ player against RHP (824 PA). No chance DS is a worse 2B than him. This is a team that likes defense, contact, and working the count, and then plays someone like Sosa who is good at none of those things. Odd.
  22. We have to hope JS still has the “make puzzling lineup decisions that work every time” magic from last season. This is the unfortunate part of a journeyman minor leaguer like Lukes having an ok season during a “team of destiny” run. The amount of rope he’s going to get this season will be very, very long. Little literally had to blow like 3 games in a week in order to get demoted.
  23. DS hitting a 98 mph pitch from a RHP. Good sign. Lets hold this lead.
  24. I hope this outing doesn't impact Lauer's trade request.
  25. Tomorrow's starter is Taj Bradley who is averaging 97.7, so DS likely sitting tomorrow. At least he's in back to back games now when he's on a hot streak.
