The Reds rotation also looks pretty good with Bauer, Gray, Castillo, and DeSclafani. Apparently still have money to spend as well.

Atkins has a man crush on Drury, and Maile has 1 option remaining according to FG so he could realistically stay in AAA in case of injury. Law is 50/50. To me, all 3 of them should be non tendered, but wouldn't shock me if all 3 are tendered.

I think the 3/39 prediction for Keuchel is way too low. He should be able to get at least 4 years from some team, at a higher AAV.

In Drury’s case, having options remaining might be his only strength, and I’m not sure that even matters if it costs $2.5m. I expect the Jays to tender him because they seem to think he is better than he actually is, but with actually good utility players being non tendered/available, I don’t see any reason why a terrible utility player should be a priority to hold on to.

Another name from that MLBTR non tender list is Travis Shaw. Can play 1B and 3B, coming off a s***** season but two 3+ WAR seasons before that. If he’s available I could see the Jays being a fit.

Seriously, with Profar being a non tender candidate (and all that’s happened with Villar), it’s damn near crazy to tender Drury at this point.

Anderson: $9 million in 2020 Gibson: $10 million a year for three years

I don't see why the Jays would spend $9m on Anderson almost immediately after the off season began if they were just going to cheap out the rest of the way. Gibson literally got $1m more AAV than the Jays will pay Anderson in 2020. My hope is that it means the Jays are aiming a lot higher in subsequent pickups. If it means Roark and Miley will round out the rest of the rotation, then that would be pretty damn disappointing.

Either aiming higher, maybe one of the Boras guys, or waiting for the bargains. Of course maybe Gibson just wanted to sign with Texas/not Toronto. I really hope Roark is not the best guy we end up with.

Pomeranz was great after going to the Brewers and becoming a reliever, but yeah, that's a lot of faith on 26 innings of sample size. At least the off season is picking up now.

Profar would be great in the role Drury had last season. Looks like he played some LF, and graded out pretty well defensively, but everything else was in the infield, and he can play everywhere in the infield. With him being a FA after this season and Boras as his agent I'm sure he will want to go somewhere that will give him everyday AB's. The Jays could give that to him since he plays so many positions, although he wouldn't be able to play everyday at 2B/SS/3B regularly since those positions are covered. It would be amazing if he could somehow play an average CF, but that might be asking too much. A super utility role where he gets 450-500 PA seems doable. As I said, the non tender deadline is going to be interesting. Aguilar was just DFA. Villar is rumored to be NT'd. Maybe Profar and Treinen in Oakland. A bunch of interesting names are going to come out. The Jays having financial flexibility might come in handy here.

Gibson gets 3/30 when he was projected to get a 2 year deal at a similar AAV. So the trend of free agents getting more than projected continues (good).

I actually thought the Jays would get Gibson on a similar deal to what Happ got in 2016 (three years). Hopefully this means the Jays are aiming higher, but curious to see what he got from Texas.

The non tender deadline will be interesting. Should be at least a few interesting arb3 players who become available.

Yeah, they had to re-sign Butler and Reddick even if they didn't want to pay for it. Instead they chose Harris and Horford. Defensively they should be good, but Simmons can't shoot, Embiid can't work off of Simmons because of that, and they don't have the shooting around those two to help either one.

The problem with the Sixers is that Simmons and Embiid don't mesh together at all. Without Butler there to create off the dribble for them, they'll find it difficult to score in the playoffs. What else can you say about the Raps? Don't have Lowry and Ibaka again, but still find a way to win. They have a legit 10 man rotation when those two come back (Lowry-FVV-OG-Pascal-Gasol starting and then Ibaka-Boucher-RHJ-Norm-Davis off the bench).

Yes free agents getting paid well is good for the game. Maybe it won't avoid an ugly labor dispute or work stoppage in two years, but it certainly won't hurt. Teams not trying to win is the biggest issue with the game right now aside from unfair pay for a player's early career (minors + first 6 years). Baseball will probably never be a mainstream sport again but it can still thrive as a regional sport if teams actually give a damn about trying to field a contender. Paying free agents rather than waiting until April to get them for pennies is a good start so far, even if it's only AA and the White Sox doing it so far.
