  1. Today was the right call. When he pulled Manoah last time when he had like 80 pitches, that was BS.
  2. We saw a good lineup two games in a row. Expecting a 3rd was selfish.
  3. Ryu starts tomorrow, and Jansen always catches him, so will be interesting to see if Buntoyo puts Kirk at DH again tomorrow or DH's a regular and gets Tapia's big bat into the lineup. Either way, I'll enjoy these 2 catcher lineups whenever they happen.
  4. Kirk up to a 132 wRC+ on the season. That'll work.
  5. There's no doubt in my mind that Montoyo is not going to use the two catcher lineup often. Not only does he like to use the DH spot to rest regulars, but he just had a game where Tapia was the DH, so clearly he and/or the organization want him to play everyday. If we see the two catcher lineup more than once or twice a week, I'd be surprised given the way Charlie has operated so far.
  6. Yeah I'm not too concerned about Groshans' lack of power as long as he does everything else really well. A DJ LeMahieu type, even if it's not the juiced ball 2019-20 version, would still be pretty valuable.
  7. Tapia at DH and Zimmer in RF instead of CF when CF defense is like his only plus skill. Calling Charlie a minor league manager at this rate might be an insult to the minor leagues.
  8. Melanie Newman is a really, really bad announcer. If she was doing a local broadcast, then that's one thing, but have no idea why anyone thought she'd fit a national broadcast.
  9. Just saw the box score. Can’t believe Romano was used for a 3rd day in a row, especially since he wasn’t even needed in the first game. Buntoyo ended Giles and seems like it’s his mission to do the same to Romano. It’s likely that who is available in the pen is determined before the game but Charlie (if he had a brain) should have avoided Romano either way.
  10. Basically. ESPN dropped weekday baseball games because they were non exclusive (which meant games were on ESPN and local cable), so the value of ESPN’s deal with MLB dropped. MLB needed to make up that money somewhere, hence the Apple/Peacock deals. Streaming services aren’t going to want non exclusive games since there would be no incentive for fans to subscribe if they could watch the games on local cable. It might be smart to start getting in bed with streaming services with cable, especially RSN’s, being a bit of a question mark moving forward, but not sure I would have picked Apple. Amazon Prime has way more reach, at least they would have made sense.
  11. At this point the Jays need a LH bat that can slot into the middle (or top) of the order. If it's a DH, then it's a DH. Benintendi would probably be the best option since he can play the OF, but other than him and Bell, I don't know who else is out there (that is realistically available). If the Jays don't mind trading prospect capital, then Reynolds would fit the team's needs perfectly (LH, CF), but it would be costly given the years of control he has left. Maybe Ian Happ? With the roster as is, Kirk should be the starting DH and backup CA. That is such an obvious setup that it actually irritates me that the team doesn't see it. Jansen should be playing a lot but it seems like neither catcher catches back to back days, which is stupid.
  12. Agreed. Jansen and Kirk should be in the lineup together as much as possible. But I think it's a combination of Charlie being Charlie, plus preferring to use DH to rest regulars (Vlad/Springer specifically). This kind of falls on Atkins more than Buntoyo since the bench is straight ass and if the org wants to use the DH spot in a rotating fashion, then don't field a roster where playing your two catchers is your best lineup. Hopefully if/when Benintendi or Bell are on this team in July, this will become less of an issue.
  13. Pre-2019 Grichuk would have been a nice 4th OF, but the 2019-present version is replacement level. He's not good. The problem is the Jays replaced a replacement level 4th OF with what could be the worst player in the sport this season, so it makes Grich look better than he really is by comparison. Someone like Joc Pederson would have been a nice replacement for Grichuk as he hits LH and can pretend to be a CF in case of emergency. Hell, Tapia is so bad that Gardner turning down the Jays offer kind of stings now.
  14. Buntoyo does not like playing the two catchers together, and now that the 3rd catcher is no longer on the roster, it's even less likely. Tapia is going to be in the lineup. Jansen is going to sit.
  15. Tapia watch: 49 wRC+ (t-2nd worst in MLB) -0.7 WAR (t-1st worst in MLB) 139 PA Instead of dreading seeing Tapia's name in the lineup, I'm just going to root for him to take sole possession of worst player in baseball. Semien somehow has the worst wRC+ in the league so far, but Tapia can catch him. I have faith.
  16. Vlad clearly needs a DH day after that grueling off day yesterday. Best lineup the Jays can put out there is with both catchers in it, but that would mean no Tapia, so f*** that, apparently.
  17. The way to "spark" the offense (as much as it can be sparked) is by doing what Buntoyo did last night. Jansen and Kirk have to be playing everyday. When one catches, the other is at DH. Maybe when Biggio gets back you give him some DH/utility duty against RHP, but otherwise, the two catchers have to be in the lineup as much as possible. With that said, we won't see that lineup again for at least a few games. Charlie's gonna Charlie.
  18. Agreed. I'm not sure we are going to see 2019-20 Biggio again with the dead ball, but he at least has some track record of being good in the past. Tapia has been awful for years. Collins has been awful for years. Zimmer can't hit. The real problem is the team not getting another hitter in the off season when everyone knew it was a glaring hole. Now they have to hope to hold their heads above water until that happens at the deadline.
  19. Not surprised by this at all, unfortunately. The moment Tapia was acquired you knew he was going to play too much. The best lineup is Kirk and Jansen at DH and catcher. When one catches, the other DH's. It sucks that the position player depth is so bad that the two catchers playing at the same time is the optimal lineup, but it is what it is. Yet, Jansen comes back, and Buntoyo refuses to play that lineup. I think he's done it once since Jansen came back. He's still giving DH opportunities to Collins based on like a 5 day hot streak in April that inflated his numbers. He has a 20 wRC+ in his last 48 PA's, which accounts for 70% of his PA's on the season. As much as I can't stand Charlie, I think the blame has to be shared with the front office. The depth on this team sucks, and if you load the bench with scrubs and hand that roster off to a minor league manager who wants to play everybody, then you kind of deserve what you get.
  20. The one saving grace here is that the extension they gave to Buntoyo was only through 2023. So they avoided having him be a lameduck, but didn't give him much security beyond this season. Hopefully that means they'd be open to pulling the trigger mid season if the team continues to struggle, but I've long prepared for Charlie to manage this team until the end of the time, so I have no expectations.
  21. Buntoyo will find a way to give the worst position player on the team as many PA's as possible. It's just the way he manages. Panik, Tapia, it doesn't matter. Next season it will be someone else.
  22. Yeah, the Jays would want Soto and Bo in the lineup together, not one or the other, and if you want to win a World Series, then Soto/Vlad/Bo gives you a much better chance than taking Bo out and replacing him with Biggio at 2B.
