    Except Dickey was mid 30s and a knuckleballer. It's hard to gauge how well that would have translated into fulltime AL pitching with a DH. If this was a trade for a pitcher in his prime, let's say 28 with already 4 years of proven success in the majors I think I would have been way happier. But it was for a knuckleball pitcher with limited AL exposure. That's the problem, we're not saying the idea of going after a cheap/controlled pitcher was the problem it was WHO they went after. With the package they gave up, they easily could have gotten a younger AL ace, TD/Thor were well known prospects in the game.

    Nah, I like Clippard, he's pretty reliable and consistent over the past couple of years. I would have dumped Revere for a prospect. Storen makes 2m more than Clippard.

    Boston could win the division, and we've played them twice. The Jays match up well against other teams, but Boston is very well rounded. The Jays do have some older players and average SP but they should still be above .500 and be in the hunt most of the year. Do you think the jays will play this bad against the angels/baltimore/cle/min etc..?

    We are playing against one of the best pitchers in baseball that we could have signed but didn't, we'll do better against other teams just relax.

    So you can hear, the bullpen is fine, the starting pitching is fine, JB needs to be signed for 4/120 and EE 4/1010. Ok, there, now you heard what the good posters would say.

    Except they have a couple of decent starters (price/buccholz) and this stud who is injured called Rodriguez and a very good pen. Toronto will win against most other teams and have a good record, but it's Boston's to lose, they are better rounded and can fill in any holes they have at the deadline whereas Toronto really can't.

    You will be saying that the whole year, get used to it. But most teams aren't as good as Boston, they should have the division.

    The error is the Jays not adding anymore arms to the BP in the offseason. Half the BP is pretty damn weak. The other half is good, but when you want to go cheap, you're going to start testing and throwing out guys in hopes they might 'stick'. Not always good for a team that is supposed to be in 'win now' mode.

    Let's be clear, the Jays are looking to upgrade for cheap. Otherwise they had PLENTY of opportunities for pitching/relief help during the off season.

    You won't have to worry about that, they have guys that need new long term deals like XB/buchholz. They aren't going to spend 20m+ on a dh and they have no room at first. They have enough young talent that needs space, and they are tied in with panda/hanram/price now.

    Yankees are not going to involve themselves with aging players to massive contracts, they've already said that. Boston also probably won't go that high on their DH position anymore, considering some of their younger guys need to get signed and they now have Price. Very small chance either of those teams give JB or EE the term/AAV they are looking for.

    Both EE and JB would likely accept trades to a contender, they are very competitive. I mean, I doubt they'd agree to a trade to CIN or the Marlins.

    Don't confuse believing in himself with selling himself. I highly doubt he thinks he will be worth 30m in a couple of years. Zobrist just signed for less than 15m/yr. There are always free agents that can replace what his production will be in 1-2 years for most likely half the cost. The question is, what do the blue jays have to gain by taking on that risk and overpaying him for what will inevitably be decreased production?

    I think some posters here are forgetting what age he is and what happens to 36+ year olds in the majors. But of course, it's not our money. This team will suck real bad if they tie up that much money into JB and keep the same payroll, that's for sure.

    That's still insane. Even the Yankees won't be making that mistake again. Ortiz makes about 15-16m. There isn't exactly a huge market for JB at his price tag. There's Boston and Toronto and almost 0 chance Boston would go that high. JB in 1-2 years is most likely a 2.5-3ish war player at DH. There are going to be much better free agent options/value, why would you have that money tied down to a DH? I would do 3/75 max, and even that is being quite generous to him for his age. He's only going to decline, so forget about the past with him.

    Exactly, if he drops in production, his value drops. I honestly don't see a big market for him next year. The only team Toronto will outbid is itself. If his asking price is over 20m, he is bringing his market down to 1-2 teams as a dh who would spend that. Toronto has to be smart about this because there are payroll limitations for this club. The heart says sign him, the brain says get him to agree to a trade or get the pick.

    You think a team with a 89m payroll, ranked 22nd in mlb, is going to add a 20m+ player for DH? I'm just curious if you really think Houston would be in on him. Considering Keuchel might be signed long term. I just don't see houston as a fit targeting a 36 year old player. That would be way too risky for them.
