  1. Yeah it's not like Martin will have an impact or anything.
  2. 41 GP - Jason Castro 42 JF 43 SVG 44 HVK 45 KK 46 JB 47 SAM 48 SPK 49 SPG 50 TF 51 ZRO 52 TCA 53 HVK 54 JB 55 DD 56 SVG 57 TF 58 TRM 59 FTD 60 N49
  3. Remember when the Jays almost left Dunedin?
  4. Melky's money is basically going to Martin. If there was some magic way to throw Navarro's money at the OF, it would all come out even in the wash.
  5. His wife in on one of those shows.
  6. Race and religion probably have a lot to do with that.
  7. Is Travis a viable OF?
  8. Except that "someone who can play SS" in this case probably means notorious noodle bats like Goins or Ramon Santiago.
  9. Outfield depth wasn't great to begin with, it's certainly no better now. Pillar/Pompey/Bautista isn't necessarily bad but immediate contingencies are next to non-existent. Carrera is fine as an all glove CF but certainly not viable for more than short stretches. I don't know much about Caleb Gindl other than he's really short and bats left-handed. He's probably no more than a platoon option like Dickerson.
  10. You seem to be implying that it no longer holds up.
  11. Of what exactly? We all know about the injury. You're the only one who seems to be implying that his invalidates sabermetrics (or something).
  12. So anyone who believes that is supposed to be happy about the injury?
  13. Not saying that we would have still made the trade if we knew he would be injured before he even plays a game but that doesn't mean the Jays have lost the trade either. IIRC, it's till two years of Saunders for one year of Happ. It will take a string of injuries, not just the one, to torpedo the value the Jays are getting. It's true that Saunders has a track record of injuries and we don't know how well he will recover but on the flip side, Happ isn't exactly an innings eater. Trade still favours the Jays on paper but this definitely raises some doubts. Is this entirely a freak injury or did poor conditionning play a big part in the severity? People who were already skeptical about Saunders will probably assume the later.
  14. Best internal option and probably better than the FA options too. Lots of OF will be made available towards the end of spring training though.
  15. Maybe there's a team somewhere with an overpaid 4th OF that the Jays can trade with.
  16. AAAA type guys in other organizations that I like: Kike Hernandez in LA Joey Butler in TB Brock Holt in BOS (with his ability to cover all the positions, he would be amazing but good luck prying him from the Red Sox) That's all right off the top of my head but I'm sure I could come up with more.
  17. Reed Johnson and Scott Hairston are still around but they have the same platoon split as Pillar so not the best fit. Tony Gwynn Junior is a lefty but he's also perpetually mediocre. Jason Kubel is also a lefty and used to be good but that was a long time ago. He's probably done. Tony Campana is basically a pinch runner. There's someone called Andrew Brown who is about as anonymous as his name.
  18. Yeah but post-modern isn't just a nonsense word. It comes from a very specific context which is to say the post war context. What it represents is a crisis of faith in the concept of modernity itself. After WWII a lot of our beliefs about culture fell apart. Germany was supposed to be one of the most enlightened countries of the world. Home to so many great philosophers, writers and artists. If Germany could descent into cruel inhuman barbary and genocide than it means that all the beliefs we inherited from the enlightenment fall apart. We don't necessarily become better as we become more educated and cultured. The most educated and cultured people in the world devolved into barbary. So post-modernism is at its heart a crisis of faith, faith in the "modern" or in "progress". It's a term that makes perfect sense when you know what the f*** you're talking about. I feel like its important to understand these things and not dillute their meaning. We are very much living in the aftermath of post-modernism. We have gone away from a very set definition of what constitutes "culture" and in many ways that is a good thing but we've also developped a fierce anti-intelectualism which is very destructive. So in summary, I'm blaming Hitler for anti-vaxers.
  19. I know the expression "post-modern" gets thrown out a lot but I nonetheless find this use of it puzzling.
  20. Not walking away from ARod when they had a chance was a colossal mistake. Understanding what part he played in that would be key in evaluating his legacy similarly to how whether or not you blame J.P. for Vernon Wells drastically changes his legacy.
  21. My earliest baseball memories are the 1985 playoff run.
  22. I like that pick. I feel he should have gone sooner. Most of these guys won't become keepers anyways, getting a guy who'll collect some saves in the interim is a perfectly sensible investment.
  23. By your logic does this mean no one should ever drink alcohol because some people become alcoholics or are alcoholics supposed to know they'll be alcoholics before their first drink?
  24. Reminds me of Smedley Butler's stories about his coke boner.
