Ahrens was the 1st pick. Rumour was they wanted Mesoraco but he was sniped. If they had landed Mesoraco, they probably wouldn't have drafted JPA with their next pick. Likely would have have gone Mesoraco/Ahrens instead of Ahrens/JPA.

If they sign Bickford, they don't have the money for Tellez. He was an insurance policy of sorts, a plan B to throw money at if necessary. Thankfully it worked out.

The obvious risk is that Ramirez could be a lot worse than Tepera who is at least mediocre. If Tepera was at the bottom of the pecking order, you'd have the luxury (though I'm not sure I would advocate using it) of not caring about Tepera but because Biagini is in the rotation, because Grilli and Howell are gas-canning it up, Tepera is a guy who is out there protecting leads. Even if he's no better than mediocre that doesn't mean it makes sense to hand his job to a project. I get that Ramirez has upside but we've been down that road before. Jeremy Jeffress had potential, that doesn't mean it was worth it to throw him out there because eventually someone would capitalize on his talent. Unless you have strong reason to believe he can provide an immediate improvement over Tepera (and there's no particular reason to believe that), the prudent move is to try to get him to the mimors and develop him there and if he doesn't clear, you move on. You can't capitalize on every uspide play that's out there. Sometimes you have to just le the Jeremy Jeffress and the Neil Ramirezes of the world go.

What he "deserves" is irrelevant. He's on the 40 and can fulfill a bench role for a few games until someone gets activated from the DL. It's not like you're going to get a whole lot of useful intel on Smith by calling him up either. Adding him to the 40 is a pointless hassle.

No I really don't think it was. You can't just give Ramirez a spot just because he doesn't have options. There's a more risk in doing that than in seeing if Ramirez can clear. He's a nice flyer to take and I hope he clears but I didn't make sense to just hand him a spot unless Tepera was really s***ing the bed. I don't love Tepera but somehow he seems to have managed to make himself serviceable. FIP under four last year and so far this year again. That's not great but it's not "demote so we can take a flyer on some guy who was legit terrible last year" level bad either. The way more sensible move here is to try to sneak Ramirez.

It's a shame that Lourdes has basically zero playing time under his belt because he would be a super fun guy to promote given all the positions he plays. It's also a crying shame that Pompey is on the DL. There's really not much interesting on the 40 right now. As bad as Cecilliani is, I think promoting him as strictly a pinch runner or emergency defensive replacement would be sensible and fairly probable.
