  1. FWIW, that's much better showing than last year's class though it's not as good as the one two years ago. It's quite pitcher heavy but that was expected.
  2. You're more than likely right about people thinking like you on the subject. There is no greater social stigma on any crime than there is on child molestation. Most people couldn't care less about rehabilation even if presented with evidence supporting the possibility. Frankly, they'd rather burn him a the stake. I wouldn't be surprised at all if he went undrafted.
  3. Yeah I kind of fumbled around with the right terminology there. I wondered if I should go with the more vague "peripherals" but that didn't quite feel right either.
  4. I wonder if this some of link between the improvements Pillar has made and the links Smoak has made. It would be fun to think so. Pillar talked about his Fangraphs page. It is as simple as someone sat down with these guys and went through their batted ball statistics and pointed out room for improvements? Would that it were so simple.
  5. Carrera is bit like the poor man's Jose Reyes. Back when Jose Reyes was here, you knew that if you added everything up he was providing value but it was hard to reconcile that with the sloppy plays you saw on the field. Tulo on the other hand is a player with his drawbacks (mainly the contract) but his mistake free game inspires confidence and makes you feel good about the team and it's really, really easy to like him a whole lot more than what the actual dollar and cents difference between the two would dictate. Over a full season, Carrera would be about a 1.5 WIN player which basically means below average but well above replacement level which is pretty much exactly what you'd expect from a bench player but if you could trade him for a slightly more expensive player who provides the same value without as many mistakes, as a fan, you'd make that switch in a heartbeat. I wonder if you could put a number on morale destroying plays? Like surely that has some negative value beyond that of the actual play right?

  7. O.K. Well that would actually be pretty f***in' serious if true.
  8. I also suspect that they saw something in his ability to field throws at first base. I kind of wonder if there's some significant previously unnacounted value in that skill (like pitch framing a few years back).
  9. Yeah... This is where old fashioned non-analytic baseball journalism could provide some insights and I think I would trust Shatkins to be fairly sincere about what they really expected from Smoak if anyone where to ask.
  10. The abuse is described in such loose terms that's it not clear at all what she is even talking about. There's nothing substantive there even if you assume sincerity. This is like your friend who vague posts on Facebook about their "journey" though in this case with a bit of equally vague defamation for good measure.
  11. How much credit should se really give Shatking here? I mean I get that even after all this time they liked his batted ball profile and I get that they wanted to sign some insurance giving the uncertainty around Edwin but is it sensible to say to believe that the front office predicted that he would halve his k rate? That's not a small improvement. Did they really think that was something they could coach into him? I'll give the front office some credit for still seeing some upside in him but how likely did they think this kind of improvement was? Would it have been reasonalbe of them to expect this? I don't really think so. I think a lot of credit has to go to Smoak himself for this improbable improvement. It would be amazing to think the front office has some sort of insight that allowed them to predict this but at this point there's no actual evidence to support that.
  12. I imagine NJH as a way too skinny guy not a fat guy for some reason.
  13. The marketing people and the GM don't synch up on this stuff. Atkins isn't on the phone with them telling them who they should promote or not. Conversely, promotional strategies will not factor in personnel decisions. Sometimes a player gets moved before a promotion. IIRC, Bob Wickman was one player who had it happen to him.
  14. Anyone interested in Tyler Chatwood? If you put him on the Colorado shuffle, he's better than anyone you're going to pick up but you have to be an active owner and I've pretty much decided to phone it in at this point so he's a poor fit. I was hoping to build on last year's middling success but it looks like I'm going to be back in the lottery instead. Other assetts on the trading block are Adrian Beltre, Brandon Phillips, Heath Hembree and Chris Rusin. I'm mostly looking to improve my draft positioning though I'll want more than just picks for Beltre.
  15. Hum... Might have something to do with an extensive injury history and a desire to protect the assett.
  16. Bolsinger was DFA'd earlier this year too and cleared to this isn't very surprising.
  17. Takes a real lame ass to make a Star Wars pun and don't get me started on Star Wars puns in team names.
  18. Spanky's in charge of the draft. Ask him.
  19. The guy chucking baseballs could have killed someone. That makes him the worst offender and that shouldn't be up for debate. No amount of dickish behaviour on the part of the opponents justifies thats. You're going to encouter *******s in life. If you can't deal with them without putting lives in danger, you're a straight up menace to society.
  20. Smoak looks like he would be a terrible lay but an upstanding loyal husband.
  21. Just to be clear, I wasn't saving that to embarass him or anything. I just didn't read the thread yesterday at all so it took me to the beginning when I clicked and had to bump that reverse jinx.
  22. Discussion and research is ongoing about means (including that one) to close the loopholes that the bots are exploiting.
  23. Worked for Kenny Powers. http://www.kennypowersfanclub.com/episodes/season2/images/usflagslides/01.jpg
  24. The later option seems like the better one to me. Gives you a bit more flexibility at the deadline with Liriano. If you end up keeping him past the deadline, you can still shift him to the 'pen at that point but it also gives you the option of dumping his salary to a team in need of a starting pitcher. If they're still in it, that money could go towards picking up a different contract.
