Castro would be money. He's only 29, is a very good pitch framer, and can hit right-handed pitching. He very would could outproduce Martin next season.
I'm glad you mentioned him. I see a lot of names thrown around for these corner OF spots and I'm not sure that all of them are better than a Pompey/Upton platoon.
He's coming off a good year. Arguably his best since 2013. I don't think he's really a buy-low kind of player. But if he came cheap I'd consider it. Decent defensively in LF and a decent bat. He's got some speed and hits righties well.
Nice summary of Atkins presser today by mlbtraderumors.com. Osuna not being stretched out, Biagini might be, and the Jays will look to potentially add “more balance, more platoon advantage and potentially more speed."

I think Liriano has some value. The 50 innings he pitched with the Jays were much much better than what he did with the Pirates and helped prove that he's still got something left in the tank. At the time we traded for him we risked trading for a guy that was perhaps pitching to his new talent level rather than going through a bad first half of the season. The 50 innings with the Jays help prove that it was more of the latter. Also, his one year deal isn't bad, the main problem with it being that you'd only get him for one season. But if you take a look at the FA market he'd be one of the top SP's available. We wouldn't get a big return for him but I think we could do better than what the Pirates did.
It's a double-edged sword. If Biagini is in AAA stretching out, and that's still an if, we have the 5 in MLB and then Biagini and Bolsinger as the #6 and #7. That's a great 1-5 and an ok 6-7 but we've got jack s*** after that. You trade one and we have even less. There also is hardly anything in FA so it'd be even harder to replace a traded SP.
But on the flip side you could probably get a shitload in a trade for JA Happ right now. The market for pitchers is historically bleak. Happ at 2 years 26 million is BY FAR anything better that you could get on the FA market. Shatkins might be able to get a serious overpay for someone like him.
If we wanted to save even more money we could platoon him with Pompey. Pompey's minor league splits suggest that he's better while batting left-handed.
Yeah that would be a no-brainer. I wonder if Holliday is available for 1/12 though. When all is said and done Holliday and Bautista's contracts may end up closer than we think. But like you said, getting that pick is a nice bonus to take Holliday over Bautista.
You've sold me on Holliday. How much better is he than simply resigning Bautista though? I guess it all depends on cost and the potential to get a draft pick from losing Bautista.
I agree with what you are saying but the Cubs probably would have still done the deal they just would have paid him more and would be on the line for more guaranteed money IMO. Giving him player options shaves a few million of you would have to assume. If he would have had two good years and then opted out and then he sucked it would have worked out fantastic for them.
Player options make sense in certain circumstances. Yes, Jason Heyward's looks terrible right now but if the Cubs could have gotten him without the player option they would have just done it anyway.
Yeah I am 100% for stretching Biagini out. Him and Bolsinger as the #6 and #7 to go along with the great 5 is a good start to having depth. We were so lucky this year to not have any pitching injuries. That will be hard to replicate next season.
I hear ya. But Sanchez's stuff looks pretty legit. He doesn't have a track record because he's really young. I think he's a good bet to be pretty good the next 4 years. Injuries with pitchers are always a concern though so I agree with you on that.
Calhoun has a track record but we'll see how he ages. His bat is good but it's not special, his value is largely tied up in his defense. Turning 30 next year.
I also think the market has plenty of starting caliber corner OF players. The pitching market is junk. Further makes Sanchez more valuable IMO. And of course Sanchez is a lot younger which could allow us the ability to lock him up for a lot longer than we would have Calhoun. Not sure how much that is worth though.
Man just looking at the FA list again and it's actually got a lot of options where we have needs (corner OF, DH, RP) but it's dog s*** where we have strengths (3B, SS, 2B, SP).
