  1. We are going to be terrible again this year aren't we?
  2. Gotta love running a Rays-like payroll when the projected Opening Day rotation projects to be about 5 WAR total and not a single pitcher is projected to crack a 5 ERA.
  3. What other options are there? Keuchel? Trade? Or just sign a band aid like Teheran?
  4. Lol ok guys, whatever you say. Can't wait for this frontloaded Ryu deal.
  5. And that rotation was better entering the year than this one as currently constructed. There is still definitely time to improve it, it's just a shock to the conscience to see our "ace" projected to have a 5.16 ERA.
  6. Starting to like this guy more and more.
  7. https://www.sanspo.com/baseball/news/20191218/mlb19121804000003-n1.html This is the Japanese media that the tweet is referencing. I'd say it's probably legit, the org that runs the site is legitimate from what I can tell, even if the site itself looks a little iffy. 2 years, 6 mil total.
  8. I doubt we frontload any contracts. First off, no one ever really does that because of inflation and the fact that contracts can be moved. Vernon Wells is definitely an outlier but it's a great example. Also, I think the current thinking is that the labor deal will expire soon and the next one will have higher salaries for the players anyway. So 20 million in 4 years isn't going to be as big of a deal as frontloading a deal to 30 mil in year 1 is now.
  9. Agreed. Similar talents but the Miley deal is way more team friendly. That said TO is a tough sell right now, especially for pitchers and in order to get him here we would have had to beat that offer which pushes it closer to Roarl territory anyway.
  10. Cherington must like something about him.
  11. Can't wait for 160 innings of that
  12. Gotta use RA9-WAR for a knuckleballer!
  13. Sucking the next two years does the team no good and without some better pitching we are going to do exactly that. It's hard enough to attract free agents to TO and when you're winning 70 games a year it's even harder. Ryu is good and helps us not suck, plus we are running a Rays like payroll anyway. A 3 year deal for him doesn't stop us from doing anything moving forward.
  14. I don't think people did recognize that at the time. On top of it, the board went waaaay further than that haha. The discussions of re-signing him would come up every offseason and rather than take the near guaranteed WAR surplus each year people would start bitching that they wouldn't want him back at all while foregoing any sort of analysis on how it would probably be a good move. I'm pretty sure you would even admit back then that you weren't being rational about it you just simply couldn't stand watching him pitch. Plus, you're all wrong on how it was annoying to watch him pitch anyway. Knuckleballers are cool and he was a good fielder. You would all slob Darren O'Day's knob when he would submarine an 84 mph fastball over the plate but god forbid RA Dickey throw a 77 mph knuckleball. It wasn't his fault AA was a dumbass and traded Thor for him.
  15. This board usually has pretty good takes but those takes are pretty universally s*** when it comes to RA Dickey. He was legit good for us. If Roark replicates any 2 of the 4 RA9-WAR seasons (particularly 2 of the first 3) that Dickey had with us I'll be happy with the 2 for 24.
  16. Ah ok I didn't know he wasn't ready until mid year. Yeah probably not a fit.
  17. What about Rich Hill? Does he have a pulse still and would he be worth pursuing?
  18. Ryu would be awesome. He's very risky but the guy threw up almost 5 WAR last year. He could provide the exact kind of pitcher we need atop the rotation while at the same time if he does only throw 100 innings or so his contract isn't likely to be a disaster either. I'm obviously all in on 3 years and would consider 4.
  19. That's exactly what I was thinking.
  20. I took the question very literally. Did the signing make me "happy"? No, but it didn't make me angry. I'd say I'm more indifferent to it. I do think they needed to do something and it's not really an overpay. But I don't trust Roark to hold up at all over the next two years as he enters the latter stages of his career. Compare it to similar talent and I like the Pineda, Gibson and Lindbolm deals more (granted who knows how much more we would have had to have paid so I take that with a grain of salt) AND I wonder if it'd just be better to take the 12 mil a year and bake it into a better Ryu and/or Keuchel offers.
  21. Jays pass in the Rule 5
  22. Depending on how attainable they are that's a huge difference between the initial 9 mil figure.
