Santana crushes lefties and has throughout his career. Mayza probably gets him out only 60% of the time. Mayza has also been worse on 0 days rest through this career. After Santana it was obvious that Dylan Moore would come in to pinch hit and he crushes lefties too. Schneider is a dipshit, the only thing I don’t know is if Atkins told him that Mayza-Santana was a matchup that they liked.

Seems like Catchers age the best to me. I don't have any hard data on that but there's loads of older guys that still play in the bigs. I think it's because they really don't move that much so if their foot speed starts to slow down it doesn't matter as much. Plus, Kirk is an elite framer and I don't think that skill ages. The Molinas were all fat and lasted a long time.

Yeah right now with just Manoah, Gausman and Berrios set in the rotation we really need two starting pitchers. I think White and Kikuchi should stretch out in spring training but ultimately start in the bullpen and then can move to SP roles if needed. Lucky for the Jays there is a ton of older pitchers who will be looking at short term deals this offseason. We could also look to acquire one by trading Jansen. As for the bullpen I think we really only need one decent late inning guy and then some lotto tickets.

They probably hired a consultant group who is conducting polling on season ticket holders to see how pissed off they are at Schneider and if it will affect their decision to renew or not. Once they get the results they’ll make a decision.

I've spent the past 3+ days trying to figure out why the hell Schneider went with a lefty in Mayza against Santana when Santana hits lefties so much better than he does righties. I've poured over every statistic I can find and the only thing I've seen is that Schneider wanted Santana facing a lefty because he hits less home runs against LHP. Santana is a patient, well-rounded hitter vs LHP and hits for better AVG, OBP and SLG but without a ton of home run power. Against RHP he's a garbage boom-or-bust swinger that goes for homers. So Schneider was trying to avoid a big inning via a grand slam there but that makes no god damn sense to me whatsoever because he's setting the Mariners up for a big inning just in a different way. Next up after Santana was Kelenic who is an easy guy to pinch hit for against LHP with Dylan Moore, a guy who can hit lefties well. So if Schneider is trying to avoid a big inning with a LHP, yeah he decreased the odds of Santana hitting a jack (in theory anyway lol) but suddenly went from facing two hitters with a wRC+ in the 80s (Santana and Kelenic vs RHP) to two hitters with a wRC+ well over 130 (Santana and Moore vs LHP)! I'm not sure how the hell Schneider comes back from this. After today's press conference it sounds like Atkins is going to stand by him but GM's don't usually outlast two different managers. You can fire one and then hire the next one and the interim guy doesn't count. But I'm not sure it's wise of Atkins to make the interim manager the permanent one when he will be feeling the heat from the media and the fans from day 1. He could just as easily find one that doesn't carry all of the baggage that Schneider will.

Great summary but you missed a few trades: -Francisco Liriano for Teoscar Hernandez who has given us 11 WAR and counting over the past 5 years -He got that broad running the Marlins to accept Joe Panik for Adam Cimber and Corey Dickerson lmao. In 108 innings Cimber has given us a 2.42 ERA. -Traded Travis Bergen for a struggling Robbie Ray who he then extended for 1 year and Ray won the Cy Young that season

Not a bad idea. Would probably get us the frontline starter or flamethrowing reliever we need. Maybe both.

Funny you mention Brad Hand. He was a deadline acquisition who since becoming a reliever 7 years ago has had an ERA of 3.38 or less in every season if you exclude his brief 8 inning stint as a Blue Jays where he had a 7.27 ERA. After we released him he signed with the Mets for the rest of the year and went back to being good again. Relievers are fickle and spending big trade assets for them is risky.

I didn't say we had bigger defensive needs than CF. I said we had bigger needs than CF defense. Much bigger. Starting pitching, bullpen and then SS defense are all in worse spots than CF defense. I assume we have limited resources this offseason and I'd hate to see us spend most of them on an oft injured CFer when we've got bigger holes to worry about. On top of it, look at Nimmo's injury history. If you are worried about the wear and tear on Springer's body in CF and want to move him to a corner, the same logic means we'll be looking to move Nimmo to a corner a year after we sign him too. Pass.

Woops just saw Nimmo come up. He didn't appear on Spotrac's list for CF. His metrics are better than Springer in some instances and worse in others. His high OBP, left handed bat would be nice. But he's often injured as well and come next year you guys would be wanting to acquire yet another centerfielder so we could then move Nimmo to the other corner OF to save the wear and tear on his body too.
