    A lot of it is probably rooted in not wanting to make big changes based on small sample sizes. Springer looked like the worst player in baseball but now he looks like he's actually going to be pretty decent the next couple of years so sometimes patience can pay off. Some of it has been bad timing too. Turner has been up and down and any time they were probably ready to bench him he was trending up. KK had that injury which you could say threw off his timing and his defense has been good so they wanted to keep playing him. At this point, I'm sure they've known for a while that they need to bench these two but with the trade deadline they want to play them to try and get something for them which I think is the right move.

    Ok fair enough. It was an interesting article so I shouldn't fault anyone for discussing it and it naturally leads into another discussion about the offseason.

    Do you guys think that bitching daily about a couple of one year deals this past offseason is perhaps missing the forest for the trees? Hear me out. 1. The drafting and player development and the onfield performance of the core, are far far bigger issues and far more worthy of your time. 2. Atkins did seemingly hit on a couple of multi-year deals in IKF and Yariel. That's going to be a bigger net gain then whatever you guys think is lost by not signing Joc over Turner in a garbage year. 3. Atkins bigger screwup, is not playing a Buffalo Boy over KK and Turner much sooner. Horwitz is a Steamer600 3.5 WAR player (!!!). Schneider is a 2.3 WAR Steamer600 2B/LF. Ernie Clement is a 2.1 WAR infielder. These guys are just as good or better than any of the FAs you keep longing for and should have been playing while we were still in contention. Bottomline is that Ross Atkins has 99 problems, and his offseason might be one. But it's not very high on the list and even then it's only a couple of one year deals that he whiffed on. But even then he could have rectified it quickly with a Buffalo Boy and he didn't.

    Can't help but wonder if the front office being on the hot seat lead to these picks... Highly polished college arms close to the big leagues. The first rounder seems like a good pick regardless though so not a huge deal.

    This guy seemed like a fine 2nd round pick but then I read about the velo and where he was on draft boards and he seems a little underwhelming. I agree, they must think they can easily unlock more velocity. And if that's the case then he seems like a good pick?

    I'm still pissed about this one. I would love to know the full story. Seems like Shapiro: -Didn't understand how important it was to the franchise. He was pretty new to the franchise. We have had some team success, but we don't have a ton of all-time greats. -Didn't even think it was a possibility that he wouldn't go in with a Jays cap. But when Doc died, all bets were off. -And as a result of the first two, just didn't kiss his wife's ass as much as he should have. Meanwhile, the Phillies did. That said, once Doc died, the Jays had some severe disadvantages. The Halladays were Americans who lived in Pennsylvania. It's harder for Toronto to give the family as many perks as the Phillies could. The Phillies can give her and the fam season tickets, box seats with the owners, invite the family to all the parties and functions, etc. The Jays can do that as well, but it would be harder for the fam to take advantage of it. Regardless, this is why teams should be very careful when they trade their Hall of Famers. We got a pile of s*** (the prospects) followed by a kick in the nuts (no Jays cap on his HoF plaque).

    During the fog of war both sides have the potential to flub communication. Freddie Freeman is a great example. Joc Pederson's camp could have literally told the Jays he prefers the West Coast so you better up your offer. The Jays took it too literal instead of as a negotiating tactic and the end result is Pederson signed in Arizona. Now Pederson, who will be a FA again, and as an aging DH needs as many suitors as he can get, has a chance to walk back those comments because they are playing the Jays and does so. Hell, the Jays themselves could be in the market for a DH again. Smart move by Joc to put these comments out there.

    Yeah I've been saying this the whole time. They didn't fully trust IKF to be the full-time 3B and hoped to fill the position with a kitchen sink approach. They were probably hoping to get 80 games out of IKF, 40 out of Turner, some out of Biggio, some out of Clement and the rest out of the Buffalo boys. There was also an opportunity to revisit the position at the trade deadline too. The plan actually kind of worked insofar as 3B is concerned because IKF turned out to be the best player on the entire team until he got hurt. Unfortunately, Turner can't play 3B at all which was stupid to think he could. And his 40 year old bat has slowed to the point that he's not a good DH either.

    I'm in a 14 team dynasty where you can pick up minor leaguers midseason. I have one slot available and maybe more depending on what happens over the course of the year. The top guys I've identified are: -Luis Morales OAK -Blake Mitchell KCR -Travis Sykora WAS -Max Muncy OAK -Cooper Pratt MIL -Angel Genoa CLE I'm generally not that big on pitching and catching prospects but the alternatives are guys much lower on lists like Pratt or Genoa. Who would you guys take?

    What if the offers are absolute garbage? Still moving him?

    His numbers suggest he should be better than the results so far and now would be a perfect opportunity to test him to see if he can be a #5 SP or if he needs to be a long man.

    Yeah Justin Turner recently said that the org does an extremely good job of making sure the players and their families are taken care of. Seems like a point of emphasis under the Shapiro regime. One of the few things this regime has done well is to make it an acceptable landing spot for FAs and it seems to have a good reputation as a player's org.

    On top of Kikuchi we can sprinkle in some sweeteners like a reliever (Yimi or Richards) as well as vetrin presents (KK or Turner) and we can pay for all of it which could be enticing to some poor teams. Heck, we could even send them Kikuchi's battery mate in Jansen.

    Yep. You can tell Schneider hasn't given up hope yet and I feel for him. He seemed to take that loss especially hard. But this team is done with that bullpen. I've completely checked out of the wins and losses. Early in the year that game would have had me pissed. I didn't really care this time. Was more excited with Kikuchi pumping up his trade value more than anything else.

    Bizarre rants that often take form in some sort of fan fiction. I don't understand it but I don't find him annoying or anything. He's not really mean (unless you are an 18 year old prospect) or picking fights either. I just scroll right past.

    He should get a haul. What other starting pitchers will be out there that are better? Crochet if he's even dealt?

    Something to consider about that 2013 team is that two years later we had the best team in baseball in 2015 and it wasn't even close. +221 run differential and the next closest team was the Cardinals at +122. And that didn't require a rebuild nor did the farm contribute a whole lot to the turnaround.

    This year is probably worse but 2013 would rival it. On the heels of the Marlins trade as well as the Synder for Dickey trade. Bautista had an injury plagued year and the starting pitching sucked and we finished 74-88. The offense was a tick above average and we had a good bullpen at least. Expectations were high though, or at least there was some reason for optimism, and the team hadn't been to the playoffs forever. This team is probably more frustrating to watch though. Good defense and starting pitching but bad offense and a horrible bullpen is a really bad combination to watch. Good defense and solid starting pitching isn't really that entertaining, no matter what anyone says. Offense is entertaining and we don't have it. And a bad bullpen is one of the most frustrating things in sports.

    I tend to agree. He let Craig Biggio bully him into tendering his son contracts for YEARS before finally finding the courage to cut him loose. But he did eventually do it. Dante doesn't have the Hall of Fame credentials that Craig Biggio has, but he is a much more physically intimidating presence. Only time will tell if Ross has the courage to do it again.

    Dante Bichette's son's reign of terror as our starting shortstop might finally be coming to a close. He's surrounded on all sides with SSs better than him. Kinder-Falafel on the IL, Leo Jiminez on the big league team and now Gabriel Cancel-That-Big-Bo-Extension in Buffalo. I pray that Ross Atkins finds the courage to do the right thing and trade Bo to the Dodgers for 50 cents on the dollar while he still can.

    In the Atlantic League he was third in homers, third in steals and 5th in walks. Been playing mostly 3B and SS in Buffalo. I have no idea how good the Atlantic League is. Looks like a ton of MLB flameouts. Frank Schwindel, for example, has had big league success in the past and projects for a wRC+ of 92 in the big leagues this year, is also tearing up the Atlantic League. But he's a no glove 1B. So maybe Cancel could be a bench guy or something. Regardless, he's definitely worth a look in AAA.
