  1. Anyone catch Mike last night?? We are only 3 back. Did Mike give live updates on the Rays game?? I see an opportunity for Mike to practice play by play. I propose that while this insane pennant race is going on, Mike should stop taking calls and give us live play by play of the Rays games, as he watches it on MLBTV or whatever Rogers offers. If we happen to get 7 back or more Mike can go back to regular Jays talk. If we get over .500 or we get 2 back we may want to consider sending Mike Wilner on the road to follow the Rays live. That way he can do live play by play and keep us very up to date on the pennant race.
  2. You are right... this did not literally happen... they did not literally claim they had a product that 'cured' cancer... My post was just a little comedy routine with a bit of truth. I work in biomed and have seen a bit of corruption here and there. Some of it just stupidity. However perhaps my feeble "engineer" mind does not contemplate the greater plans of the marketers and MBAs. I bow before Moogie!
  3. Hey... question?? Is Moogie still posting on the board and if so under what name??
  4. There are huge problems in reproducibility of scientific results... it is particularly problematic in cancer research... mostly at the preclinical and research stage... even at the clinical trial stage people do everything possible to present results in the most "positive" light. The selection process (who will get promotions) in biotech companies is biased to those who have a "positive" attitude. It's difficult to bring up a "wrongful termination" suit if one is proven right several years later... http://www.nature.com/nrclinonc/journal/v10/n12/full/nrclinonc.2013.171.html
  5. I like Mike because he gives every caller the same condescending tone... no matter if they are stupid or smart... Stupid caller - ... and I would of drafted Mike Trout... Mike (justifiably smug) - well I would of too... knowing what I know now... but it doesn't work like that... it just doesn't work like that... Smart caller - ... I am kind of worried about Kevin Pillar, his defence has been great but can a contending team run out a .260 on base percentage guy every day... Mike (un-justifiably smug) - we used to have a guy around here Devon White... his on base percentage wasn't that good either...
  6. Just a little comedy relief... don't take it too seriously. Are you related to Wilner?? On the positive side Wilner does a great job providing for his family. Many of us don't have the temperment to say what we are told to say and hold a full time job. Me: No that drug does not cure cancer... it does not and we cannot claim it does. Them: Well, thanks for your honest opinion. Me: What do you mean my access card is not valid... I work here???
  7. Oh My God!!! He was giving live update on the Rays game during the Jays talk. He was acting like it was the most amazing thing that the Jays were going to be within 3.5 games of first. "Yes folks, Your Toronto Blue Jays are 20 minutes away from 3.5 games out of first!"
  8. Also there was a very interesting argument between Wilner and a caller that wanted Bautista on the DL. The caller tried to make the following argument - 1. Jose Bautista is not slugging very high with his bad shoulder (caller provided data that Jose only has .420 slugging with bad shoulder.) 2. Yes Jose is getting on base 3. But Smoak can provide defense and .400 slugging at first for 15 days. 4. After the 15 days Jose can return with a good shoulder, play the outfield and provide .500 slugging for the next 100 games. Wilner was having none of it, he brought out all his sarcasm and smugness. Wilner - No. You don't take Jose Bautista out of the line-up for Justin Smoak. Caller - But what I'm saying Mike is that Jose needs a rest, his power is down, Edwin would get a rest too. We wouldn't lose much over 15 games, then we'd have a healthy Jose for the rest of the year. Wilner - No. You don't take Jose Bautista out of the line-up for Justin Smoak. Caller - But Mike, his power is down. I think it will come back if he gets a rest. Wilner - Well, yes (grudgingly) I admit he's not the 50 homer Jose Bautista anymore, but he is still getting on base, he still drives in runs. He's still got an .800 OPS. Caller - But Mike!!! I think if he gets a rest he will be back to 35 homer, .900 OPS Jose. That;s all I'm saying. It's only 15 games. And he will back at full power. Wilner - No! You don't take Bautista our of the lineup for Justin Smoak
  9. OK people. I know the kids don't like too many threads on the board. However there is no question this is thread worthy... There are a few little jokes on the Game Thread from last night... Apparently Fake Wilner posted that Drew Hutchison "almost" pitched a perfect game. Everybody is like "lol sounds like something Real Wilner might say"... Well here is the things.. Driving through New England last night I had the opportunity to listen the real Mike Wilner show on XM (apparently if there is no West Coast game after, they just continue on with the post game). Real Wilner mentioned that Drew Hutchison almost pitched a perfect game. He spent altleast 5 minutes, possibly 10 on the subject... he brought it up several times. 1. Wilner went through each of the 4 hits, explaining that they weren't real hits... 2 grounders, 1 bunt, and a squibber. 2. Wilner said "Nobody will remember this years from now... years from now it will just be a 4 hitter, but Drew Hutchison was this close to perfection." 3. He called the performance a "Maddux" (this was fair enough) 4. "This close to perfection". He said it several times! It's just funning that everyone is assuming the Fake Wilner made a good joke... but a lot of the time Fake Wilner isn't joking, he is just listening to real Wilner and transcribing it! Please share your favourite real wilner stories here!
  10. Devon White was a switch hitter with as even of splits as you could ever wish for. Kevin Pillar is a right handed hitter who hits .220 with a .250 on base percentage against righties. If you platooned him as to minimize the damage he still would be doing more damage then Devon White, because he would still only have a .299 on base percentage. Ok lets look at the number of plate appearances each will get. That is how much damage was White causing hitting leadoff?? Let's say Pillar is going to get 100 plate appearances less than White. So for 100 plate appearances White has to be compared to Josh Donaldson. Josh Doshaldson will get on base 3 times more and hit another homer. In 500 or more plate appearances White has to be compared to Pillar. White will get on base 30 times more, hit more homers, steal more bases, blah, blah, blah. How does this math work exactly??
  11. Wow. This is tremendously bad. Devon white had a career 98 ops+. In his Toronto Years he had a .327 on base percentage. He had a .319 career on base percentage. From 91 to 93 he hit fairly well. 15-20 homer pop. Great base-running. Averaged 100 runs a year. 92 was the poorest of the 3 years. But he had a .330ish on base percentage those 3 years combined. There is an argument to be made that he shouldn't of hit 1st. And people made that argument. It doesn't matter to much how you make the lineup. Kevin Pillar has a .260ish career on base percentage. .260ish this year. He has hit 5th-7th most of this year. White's true talent on base percentage was about .330 in 1992... (meaning in his late 20s he was a .330ish guy, just underperfoming that year). Kevin Pillar's "true talent" on base percentage may be about .280ish if we boost him up a bit from his minor league numbers (say he's underperformed a bit so far) It is ludicrous, beyond belief, beyond honesty, beyond basic dignity to claim that White did more damage.
  12. That was the fake wilner right?? My god not the real Wilner.
  13. That would only rank as the second stupidest thing I've seen on the board this year. Another guy said KC has finally proven Billy Beane and the on base percentage crap wrong. (cough KC has the 2nd highest on base percentage in the AL. cough)
  14. I had a debate with a friend of mine about Marcum and Dickey. This was even before Dickey under-performed for us. I said Marcum=Dickey. They are both soft throwers with a trick pitch. I told him I thought Marcum's change-up, when on, rivaled the knuckle ball in terms of making guys look silly. I think Marcum _could_ of won a Cy Young, in the same way Dickey did. Get hot for a year and make guys look silly. I'm sure people will think I'm crazy. I believe Marcum's career performance is really close to Dickey's... in terms of WAR/162 games. Marcum is younger, missed a lot time because of injuries and maybe boozing.
  15. I've been a defender but I am now on board with firing him. However if the stats guys have an argument against this I'm willing to listen. I hate the way he uses the pitchers. In my opinion the young pitchers should only go 6 or 7 even if they are having a dynamite game. Should see something like this. Sanchez 6 innings - 2 runs, 1 walk 4 ks -- Attaboy Sanchez go to the shower and be happy you had a good night. Osuna 2 innings - Is Osuna better than Syndegard?? Probably f***ing not... but nice job Osuna (pitches every 3 or 4 days like this, Hendricks can do this if Sanchez ain't available). Cecil 1 innings - all right Cecil you are a bad mother f***ing closer. Everyone for the most part decides their own fate. None of this 1/3 inning s***, no Sanchez walking guys to lead off the 7th.
  16. Wasn't it always really weak?? He just had the awesome change up.
  17. Names like Kenny Williams and Dan Duquette have not been inspiring but better than Beeston I guese. It is to bad AA has turned out to be such an idiot. At one point people were thinking he'd be president and higher someone smarter than him to be GM.
  18. I agree with you on this one... he shouldn't of started the inning, and Sanchez shouldn't of started the 8th last night. I really dislike how Gibbons never takes a starter out on a good note, especially young pitchers, who you want to keep their innings and pitch counts down anyway.
  19. The problem is they allready tried to change the President but couldn't get the guy they wanted... now everything is in a holding pattern. Gibby will be sacraficed in a few days... so the people will get a bit of a sacrafice. Real change begins in October. Doubt they'll get it right.
  20. Sorry... it's one of those days, tough loss (or heading that way)... sarcasm detector was broken.
  21. Well to be fair this isn't correct. Ryan Goins is good at defense, but very bad at hitting. He would have to be a once in a lifetime defensive player to make up for his offense. He is a good defensive player, not once in a life time.
  22. ?? If all 27 outs were great defensive plays then of course the pitcher did not pitch a great game... the fielders played a great game. What the hell is wrong with people. This is just simple logic.
  23. OK then. This is the official feel good, inspirational thread for the 2015 Blue Jays. In 2014 we had "calm down". It had a good run. Lasted to maybe August until we realized calm or not, the Jays were not going anywhere. So now we try 'f*** you, suck my cock'... the official feel good slogan of your 2015 Toronto Blue Jays. How long will it last?? Who the f*** knows. We lose tomorrow and everyone forgets about this.. .we start winning 'f*** you, Suck my Cock' becomes a thing.
  24. I just cannot get invested in this foolishness again this year. Whether we keep calm, or tell people to go f*** and suck themselves it will not matter.
  25. What if it ends up being like the Dick Cheney thing... Dick Cheney was hired to find the next vice president of the United States. The candidates all crumbled during the interview process and in the end only Cheney himself was left standing. Come to think of it that is how Paul Beeston ended up with the President's job the second time... Gibby for GM??
