  1. Well, we did with Varland :P Looking back, it’s too bad they never tried Varland in that role last summer when Hoffman was struggling, but oh well. Who knows what might have been. Regardless, Varland looks fantastic in the role early on, and Hoffman seems much more comfortable in the seventh inning. The bullpen just feels and looks a lot better this way.
  2. Looking forward to this pitching matchup. Hopefully Yesavage is 100% to battle tonight!
  3. Yeah was hoping we could catch a bit of lightning in a bottle with Sosa's bat, but so far he's been awful. Don't blame Atkins for trying on him at this stage of the season, given all the injuries we've had.
  4. Nobody’s saying the Jays are buried, but pointing to a hot stretch from last season doesn’t mean this year’s issues just disappear. Injuries have played a role, sure, but other teams deal with injuries too. At some point, the hitters still need to step up and produce more consistently instead of living off what they did over one stretch last year. Even before they went on the IL, guys like Barger, Kirk and Springer weren't really tearing the cover off the ball. Granted, small sample size, but still. We can't just expect everything to exactly happen as last season.
  5. Yeah JS is nowhere near the hot seat. He just signed an extension this offseason lol. More of the Red Sox and Mets blame should be on the front office IMO. As for the Phillies, I really don't know or can't explain their awful start.
  6. Weren’t you guys laughing at the Braves and at AA before the season started, once their pitching injuries started piling up and they were heading into the year with only two of their five starters? So how are the Braves doing now? I’m not even comparing AA to Atkins, because I like both. But the homerism and hypocrisy here are pretty astounding.
  7. I’m not criticizing Atkins at all for what’s happened. I actually think he did a great job this offseason strengthening the club, especially on the pitching side. Sure, it would’ve been nice to add another big bat to help offset the loss of Bo, but that would’ve just been the icing on what was already a very strong offseason. Injuries have definitely played a role, but we’ve also seen other teams battle through injuries early in the season. They can’t be the only excuse. The players still need to step up and perform better, plain and simple. The Jays have also let some winnable games slip away, which hasn’t helped. Even with the slow start, though, they’re still in it and at least haven’t looked as bad as teams like the Mets or Phillies. The key now is just surviving these tougher stretches and staying close to .500. Once they start getting healthier, hopefully they can go on a run in May and work their way back into the picture.
  8. How about the Braves? So excuses apply to the Jays, but if Atlanta started off bad even with all those injuries I'm sure most on here would be laughing at their front office and blaming AA. A lot were even before the season started.
  9. For $210M, it just has to happen less often than not though 😂 I love Cease and I’m a huge fan. He kind of reminds me of when the Jays signed A.J. Burnett in 2005 - a big upside arm with a ton of potential to unlock. The difference is that Burnett was injury-prone at the time, whereas Cease has been durable throughout his career, which is already a major advantage. If Cease can lower the walk rate and work deeper into games, he could absolutely turn into a true No. 1 at the top of a rotation.
  10. They could use another power bat somewhere. Okamoto looks like he's turning into that guy which is nice, and Barger is expected back soon, but another legit bat would go a long way and lengthen the lineup. Not sure who will be available at the deadline though.
  11. The Blue Jays should go out and trade for the brothers of both Varland and Rogers at the deadline. Would welcome Taylor and Gus in a heartbeat 😂 would definitely be cool if they did that haha.
  12. Taking 2 of 3 would be really sweet. I know it's only April, but this feels like a must series win for the Jays if they want to start turning things around.
  13. The Phillies have been really disappointing. I thought their pitching would make them the team to beat in that division, especially with Atlanta’s rotation already depleted by injuries to start the season. I still expect them to turn it around, but they need to start doing that soon. There’s too much talent on that roster for them to be irrelevant, unless all of their stars regress at the same time. Long term, though, the bigger issue is that they have an aging and expensive core. Their window is probably only another year or two - maybe even less if these early-season struggles turn out to be more than just a rough start.
  14. Grant definitely was celebrating last night.
  15. Matt Chapman offensively is a good comparison. I see him around 25 HR's and between a 110-120 wRC+. Maybe there is one or two Mark Reynolds/Eugenio Suarez type power seasons in him at some point where he hits out 35-40 HR. Defensively, I don't like him at 3B long term. His movement and agility are issues and it goes against the front office MO of having a strong defensive team. He might have to become a DH next season if Springer isn't resigned.
  16. Yeah doesn't hurt to add to the pen at the deadline. I'm sure Atkins will if the Jays are in contention like he has before. Last year he added Varland and Seranthony. In 2023, he added Hicks and Genesis Cabrera. Depends on who is available. If Hoffman gets back on track, along with Little, that would be a huge boost. Also, if Yimi comes back healthy in June.
  17. Let's hope Hoffman gets back on track up here, along with Little in Buffalo, and Yimi comes back healthy at the end of May/beginning of June - definitely a nice group of arms.
  18. Ask for a refund. I suppose they wanted to give him an extra day and have him starting off the Red Sox series.
  19. They should sell sake shots at the Rogers Centre and call them OKA BOMBS!!! Would definitely be a hit and money maker haha.
  20. Jays were 15-9 at the end of April in 2009 and how did that season go 😂 Still a lot of baseball left.
  21. Nice to get Yesavage back for next week! With Lukes to the IL, I guess Eloy likely stays around longer. Hopefully he could find his power stroke.
  22. I do wonder what Max would look like out of the bullpen. He could just air it out for one inning and let it fly every pitch. I think Jays24 even floated the idea during the offseason of trying him as a closer. I’d definitely be interested to see whether Max would be open to a move to the pen - kind of like what Smoltz did later in his career.
