  1. I like how you're quoting me based on a sarcastic remark I made. It's cute. But I still want to know why you think a player gets paid to provide wins. I'm waiting for your expert analysis.
  2. But, who's to say knowing some stats makes him a better player? It's conceivable that it makes him a worse player. Maybe if he took less walks he'd be more aggressive and be an even better overall hitter. There's not much reason to think either side has much merit.
  3. Oh sorry it was you not JFAS, so let me know... you think a player gets paid to provide wins... why do you say that?
  4. Um it's clearly an obvious statement, right? So that was my point, JFaS thinks a player gets paid to provide wins, but obviously there's no evidence on that. So, I'll ask you again, what does a player get paid for?
  5. I don't think there's any evidence on that: a player gets a contract based on how many wins they expect him to provide. Considering you guys think many FO's are tools, there definitely should not be evidence on that.
  6. Ya you're right, I stopped watching in September.
  7. Oh ok so what is a player paid for then? It's a hypothetical question so if it's not subjective then what is your expert answer?
  8. It's possible, but it could also make him a lot worse... he ends up taking too many pitches or something. To say JPA would be a better hitter if he knew stats better is just speculation.
  9. That's also a pretty good point. So Votto likes wrc+, there's not much reason to think that contributes to him being an excellent hitter. Hayhurst knows some stats and didn't have more than a cup of coffee in the majors. Point being there's no reason to think this makes a player better/worse.
  10. It's a pretty subjective thing what a player is paid for. You could say to sell seats, but what's that mean? Winning ball games, doing things that entertain fans. This is getting too theoretical.
  11. 1) I'm posting in response to someone else saying they raise a good point. I'm not telling anyone else to care. 2) From a fan standpoint, a big part of Votto's job is to drive in runs. That's what I was pointing to. 3) I was just saying that wrc+ doesn't matter to the fans, so in a way that guy was raising a good point. Not sure how that's devil's advocate, I didn't read the whole thread which I now assume posted similar rude comments towards what he had said.
  12. Make that 4 posters now. Wow you guys are pretty bad at reading. That's ok.
  13. Right so, like I said I'm talking about how the fanbase will react. 3 posters in a row seemed to miss that point. Maybe I should've been more clear?
  14. If the Reds are losing and Votto isn't driving in runs or hitting for power, a very large portion of the fanbase will get upset with the signing. I don't know what's so hard for you to comprehend here. Normal fans don't go on fangraphs and look at wrc+.
  15. What do you mean they are similar? They both play 1st base.
  16. That's actually a good point. At the end of the day the Reds FO wants to win ball games, and if they're not winning and Votto isn't driving in plenty of runs it's going to come back to haunt them. It doesn't matter how many BB's he's getting if they are losing. The fans will look at stats like RBI, HR, RISP and turn against the front office for signing him. That's how fanbases work when a team is doing poorly.
  17. Drew's not that good, just that he's better than putting some random minor league guy at 2B. Personally I wish they broke the bank on Cano but it wasn't happening.
  18. I don't know why everyone is so in love with Ubaldo. The guy has a nice ceiling for sure, but I hate watching pitchers who are a huge risk to pile up the walks. It's more annoying than watching guys who give up 450 foot bombs.
  19. I'd actually like if they brought Cahill in. Still young and could improve his walks. Groundball pitcher and an A+ sinker for the most part. He might be available too so let's start a rumor?
  20. Baker would be OK, I wouldn't be overly excited if they signed him but Lind definitely needs to sit vs LHP. Remember when he first came up? He had such a great approach vs lefties, took the ball to left field lots and stayed back on their breaking balls. What happened?
  21. I really think Lawrie is going to be injury prone his whole career. If he has a season where he plays 155 games I can't say I'll change my opinion unless I see a change in the way he plays. Hopefully he puts together a healthy and productive season and they can swap him for another young player before he gets hurt again, but that's very unlikely... if he has a nice season he will be a huge fan favourite again and almost untouchable.
  22. I don't think you need to know their expenses/liabilities to say at least it's "very likely" a non-issue. I'm sure they have several assets that are in U.S. currency and seeing as the Jays are a not a huge part of Rogers, there's no way this should be used as an excuse for decreasing payroll. Then again, large corporations can make terrible mistakes too, so nothing is certain unless you're an insider- I can agree on that part.
  23. I guess he's going to get promised some starts somewhere, which is something the Jays probably don't want to get into. Jeff Baker would be a nice utility bat, considering there aren't many options left. Honestly... who knows, could there be another big mutiplayer trade coming up? AA needs to essentially save his job, I wouldn't put it passed them. Personally I'd hope Lawrie puts together a good season so they can ship him off but due to PR that might be a tough pill to swallow.
  24. I'd imagine Drew could be a decent 2B and a good bottom order bat, any word on the $$ he is currently commanding? We could live with Goins/Izturis if it means getting a good starter, but it's heading towards neither happening...
