    You're saying Bautista would cost about 30 million for 1 year, that's a pretty serious claim. The value of the comp pick is in your mind somewhere around 1/3 of that cost when we have no idea what they value it as. So you're made up number of the comp pick is inducing you to believe they should sign Valbuena instead of Bautista. I think that's pretty misinformed, but that's just my opinion.

    You're waving your hands and saying that the comp pick is worth 10 million when you have no idea what they value it as... that sounds pretty dumb to me, but to each their own!

    Haha really? So they give up a pick for a win now team and spend a bit more (in terms of monetary... not your made up guess of what that pick is worth in present value to the Jays) than Valbuena to bring back Bautista. I think that's a better move than bringing in a lesser, younger player who might bring better "value" but that's just me.

    Interesting, thanks for adding. I forgot that I saw a rumour about J.D. Martinez a couple weeks ago. That is for sure a great target, if they have enough to give up (which might not be the case).

    Who would you guys like to see round out the outfield? Edwin's probability of re-signing seems low, so the biggest acquisitions left are probably in the outfield. Ideally they get 2 outfielders, but they need 1 at minimum. Some names: Free agents: Jose Bautista Mark Trumbo Michael Saunders Brandon Moss Rajai Davis Angel Pagan Colby Rasmus Potential trade candidates: Jay Bruce Charlie Blackmon Carlos Gonzalez Melky Cabrera Curtis Granderson Ryan Braun Andrew McCutchen There's a list of some of the obvious candidates. If anyone has some other candidates, it would be interesting to discuss. Thanks

    Sure, but the point is it's still growing. It was like that before- GSP (and Lesnar when he was there) were huge draws, and Silva to some extent.Before that it was Chuck Liddell, Randy Couture and a couple others. Other fighters didn't draw at all. Buy rates outside of the top stars have always been weak. I agree the top stars are always the main draw, but there is much more publicity around it now than there ever has been.

    Is anyone else in the camp of "they should just sign him?" At this point, he had plenty of time to test the market. If they're not going to sign Edwin, Bautista on a short contract would be pretty nice IMO.

    That was a great interview by Ariel, considering the context. It's funny to see him be a fanboy at times... clearly the Jays are a hugely popular team that should right below Dodgers, Yankees in terms of spending. Nice to find out Donaldson's a pretty big MMA fan, shouldn't surprise anyone.

    My point is that it's a stupid topic to even consider talking about. There's no legit evidence (and nor can their be) that signing free agents is a bad idea. /discussion

    So you named a bunch of players with bad contracts, how is that reasonable evidence? That's a really small sample size considering how many players have been free agents. Do you have some study that has shown some sort of evidence free agents are a bad idea? People are just making that theory up, considering they don't know team values etc.

    In general I agree. They do need some sort of PR management, so it's possible. I was more of belief that they were wrong on guessing the final contract for Fowler, which is a mistake on their part- albeit common among teams.

    He's saying (I think) that they shouldn't be wasting their resources/time bidding on a player that they should realize won't accept their offer, which is quite valid.

    Totally agree. I am of the belief that sometimes you need to make short term moves which have some degree of risk, especially in the division they are in. They have had a window of opportunity for a few years and in all likelihood it appears to be closing. Maybe they can become competitive again a few years later but that in itself is risky... making solely "safe" moves isn't going to win you anything in this division unless you tank for several years which is a poor idea IMO.

    I'm sure it's fine. Maybe not what they Jays value him at, but that's a totally different number.

    I'm sure the deal made sense for the Cardinals, considering they need a CF. Congrats to them.

    If they don't act like a small budget team by letting Steve Pearce affect whether or not they sign him.

    I'd like to see them stretch Biagini in the spring, although that seems unlikely now. It's worth a look IMO.

    But other FO didn't offer him 4/80 apparently. Markets aren't as perfect as you are implying IMO.
