  1. Given Jansen's injury record, we will need a backup catcher (NO, VARSHO WILL NOT START AT CATCHER) and somebody to DH. That player could be an outfielder as well.
  2. Yeah somebody like that may have worked. A little late defensive replacement, pinch running for Kirk, that sort of thing.
  3. That's why I was thinking a switch hitter like Grossman to spend some time at DH and a pinch runner type with some defense. We could have used a rule 5 type for that role.
  4. Keep in mind on day 1 of Spring training, we can move Ryu back to the 60 day DL and clear another spot. So that allows for 2 40-man spots which isn't bad. Merryweather probably gets first start and Pearson, if alive, starts in Buffalo.
  5. speed and defense: the two things that don't go into slumps. Makes a lot of sense with the new defensive rules.
  6. If we're being cheap, I'm thinking a bat and a speed player. Grossman and Locastro are my choices as free agents. Or somebody like them.
  7. No, it was a british pub, first one Jenny organized. Didn't go to the Moose meet up, that's further downtown.
  8. Looked at the roster, looks like we're about 2 bats short still, the #25 and #26 players. I figure we could use a pinch-runner defensive type and maybe a DH type. Jansen Guerrero Kiermeier Kirk Biggio Varsho Bichette Springer Chapman Lukes Merrifield Lopez Espinal
  9. Yeah. I think it was Yonge/Eglinton area?
  10. I remember it will. More special in that had actually met her in person.
  11. I sometimes wonder if we had played Moreno a bit more last year if he would have improved his value.
  12. Yeah but he'd probably end up on the DL for doing it. :-)
  13. true, it was about character as much as anything else. But upgrading defense was a huge part of that off-season.
  14. Trading an extra catcher for a guy that can improve the defense is what I like to look at. This defense could be REAL SPECIAL Might be a pitcher short though.
  15. I remember thinking the same thing when we traded Fernandez and McGriff. It's hard but gotta be open.
  16. Varsho should be 3rd string for an emergency, but probably won't start at catcher. I just think we need a guy stored at AAA is all. You may be right about Biggio playing that role, I'd just like somebody who can produce a little more to bat cleanup. We need somebody for the bench still. Robbie Grossman as of-dh makes the most sense to me.
  17. I guess having 3 CF makes sense with the new defensive limitations. It will probably save a lot of runs and makes a ton of sense. The only thing I think we still need is a Dave Winfield type (like when he played here) but probably a lefty bat as DH-1b-lf. That and we should get a reasonable 3rd string catcher for AAA. You can't count on Jansen for 162 games.
  18. I would have liked to receive at least a lottery ticket in the trade, but otherwise don't hate it too much.
  19. If Jansen goes for a CF on an entry contract, we could save some money.
  20. If KK is the replacement for Tapia/Zimmer and Bradley, could a real CF be next?
  21. Since they don't need Jansen to gain a starter, coupled with the Oakland Murphy trade, could a deal for an outfielder be on the horizon?
  22. Any idea how good Varsho is as an outfielder and catcher? Maybe a trade of Jansen for him wouldn't be bad. That way Kirk could be regular C-dh and we'd have an emergency backup in Varsho. Remember Dale Murphy was once a catcher before moving to CF.
  23. I remember when we got him: he was horrible with the Yankees and started off the season with no wins and a couple of losses. Then he got released, signed with Toronto and lost a bunch of games. Then he turned it around and won a bunch in a row. The effect of Steinbrenner on him was pretty severe. He was one of the pitchers that used to call his own game and tell the catcher. With Stieb and Clancy, he was the complete opposite, he barely touched 80 and was all about location and never throwing the same thing twice. Even threw a knuckler a few times.
  24. I once read that the Japanese baseball is a bit smaller which would have an impact on spin rates and such so I'm always a bit hesitant at Japanese imports.
  25. Ryu will be able to go on 60 day when spring starts. That frees one spot up.
