God the MVP is such a lightning rod of debate. I dont care about the award either way but I'm curious on the SABR heavy crowd's insistence that MVP be translated literally (and I feel like debating something out of boredom) But one thing I think that gets missed, is its a one year award. There's plenty of old school stats therefore that can unfortunately be relevant.. even interpreting the meaning of MVP literally.. how a tradiionalist would I mean
like say batting avg.. more specifically why would BABIP matter? If we are looking at the season, we are only looking at results. What does good luck or bad luck have to do with it? So say a guy that's sitting at .390 on BABIP and it helps him to big numbers.. when he usually hits around .280.. its wrong to say either side is wrong in how they view that.
Also, situational hitting.. if a guy hits .450 with RISP and it helps him pad the sexy RBI stats that voters like.. we should disregard cause its not sustainable?.. even though its unarguably helping the guy's team win that much more in that given season. Or a guy should be penalized for coming up 50 more PA's (successfully) with RISP then the next guy? He's helping him team win a lot more than the guy that isnt getting the opportunities... this is 2013, we have to be fair and equal I guess?
FB% that go for the HR.. you get the pitcure..
So there's that from a tradionalist perspective.. thoughts? Im really just throwing crap to wind here for debate:)
Also, on team W's.... this one is harder to argue I guess besides the human element. I guess voters like seeing good players do well when it matters. Kind of like how many BJ fans like myself tend to care much less when their team is doing bad (please no getting called out by Gibbers now!)
