I guess the argument is that a more stable secondary market legitimizes the team's own box office. The team also benefits from impulse attendees, rather than secondary sellers benefitting. -

Really annoying. Last fall I went to a few mid-week games for like $10, buying 30 minutes before the game and printing. If the pre-game firesale no longer exists at the 2 hour cutoff then I'll be super disappointed. -

Last year, it somehow became evident that the proprietary and non-public HitFX stuff thought Smoak was a true talent ~.350 wOBA hitter, or something like that. I'm assuming that something like that is still characterizing Smoak as a good bet to start hitting. I mean it's not like everything is awful with Smoak. In the last two years he has a .208 ISO and 32 dingers, and that's in 669 PA so one full season. He also has a good walk rate. And, for most of his career the contact rate has been pretty good for a power hitter. Some ingredients are there... I dunno. He'll probably suck and I agree that he should have been cut loose, but we'll see.

Meh, let it play out. I understand why people hate the Justin Smoak thing, but obviously the Jays think there is something there. I'm not sure what it is, but they have a lot more information than us. Someone like Angel Pagan doesn't move the needle much for this roster. Having moving parts is a pretty good thing for a baseball team. Right now Pearce could end up at 1st or left field. If Pompey breaks out or Upton looks productive while Smoak sucks again, then Pearce is the 1B. If Smoak turns into a useful player then Pearce can play left. Let's see what happens. The time to call for Smoakie being cut was back when viable starters were still available in free agency - guys like Valbuena, Napoli, Moss. That's just not the situation anymore; Pagan is 35/36 and does not project well.

Imagine a Boyd-RichHill-Nicasio-Morton-Musgrove-Tomlin staff. They would lose K/BB nearly every week.

Yup and I'm pretty sure they would. There have been weeks before where the one owner went into say day 5 with no walks - their K/BB displays as zero and the other owner's K/BB is bolded and counted as a leading stat.

Gose still produced like a 4th OF --- 2 fWAR in 372 career games sucks but it's above replacement level. Of course you're right, that's not an excellent 4th OF at all. I think Gose is a cautionary tale in one specific thing - scouting defense. If he was actually a plus defender like he was supposed to be, he would be a great 4th OF, all other things being unchanged. Is there a mental component to his disappointing defensive metrics (or his poor baserunning value)? maybe. Mental assumptions/conclusions are hard to make though. Kevin Pillar is obviously a good comparison. In terms of raw tools, Gose is probably better. But KP has one of the best mental games out of anyone in baseball. -

Bullpen is actually solid IMO. Giles, Neris, and Ottavino are all good and could close this year. Obviously your team is stacked. Bryant+Machado+Schwarber+Lindor is insane for the next 5+ years... rotation is also good enough

Don't forget about Jarred Cosart (more walks than strikeouts) and Trevor Cahill (4 starts in the last two season). Is this the most obvious example of tanking we've seen in recent history? Is there a Bryce Harper type in the draft in 2018?

You could argue that he needs to STOP listening to coaches. When he first came up he had a 45% FB rate and he hit a ton of dingers. Ever since, he has been like a 33% FB guy who just beats the ball into the ground. And he's been bad. Every year, he probably has listened to his hitting coaches, done his cage work, his BP work, focused on hitting the ball up the middle like everyone tells him, and it's made him worse. It's time for Brett Lawrie to go back to when he was 21 years old. He needs to get LESS mature. He needs to get MORE self-confidence, if that's possible. f*** coaches. EMBRACE THE STUPID.

You're making a lot of assumptions. Players with talent + great personalities fail all the time. Brett Lawrie is a douche but his failures at the MLB level might not have anything to do with his focus or passion. IMO he has just been weirdly indoctrinated by traditional baseball coaching that has morphed him into a skinny ground ball slapper and not the beefy slugger he should have been.
