  1. I haven't been as confident about someone's projection for a player since David Cooper's .800 OPS floor.
  2. Didn't anybody from MLB think to review/assess this before the season started? Mandated that the turf be installed 'x' number of days in advance so they ascertain its merits? What a donkey show.
  3. Definitely Stieb's slider for me. The fact that Shawn Camp got mentioned in this thread before Stieb makes me feel really, really old.
  4. I have never seen a major leaguer as lost in CF as Fred Lewis when he had to fill in for a few games. It was like he lost total equilibrium and control of his body when he stood 30 steps left of where he usually stood. He basically moved like a blind, crippled anteater out there.
  5. If you hear someone use the term Smoakamotive, that's Wilner.
  6. Meh. Only so many spots.
  7. Because the current year is more important than the future year. If Sanchez is a better option than Estrada and Hendricks right now, I would go with Sanchez and worry about six years from now, six years from now.
  8. Dave Stewart is a GM of a Major League Baseball team. I still can't believe that this is a true statement.
  9. Well, what should happen and what will happen are very different things. I don't see any way this team sends down Sanchez, and not because his ERA was shiny last year, but because it was VERY shiny.
  10. I think we're beyond the point where we can reasonably expect Goins bat to improve, no matter how many ABs he gets. His primary skill is his defense. The best way to utilize that is as a backup middle infielder where he rarely bats. Not saying it should be him to start the season though, just that that's the only role he should employ.
  11. 1 year @ $5 million is high, but reasonable IMO.
  12. That's pretty awesome.
  13. Lots of games (I'm 40 now). Fondly remember the drive of 85.
  14. Boy, I bet Lawrie is going to be disappointed he's missing out on playing on the XTREME! turf.
  15. Grass would have also deadened the helmet he threw at that umpire, resulting in fewer games missed. No way the helmet takes that hop on grass.
  16. Any team has a shot once they get in the playoffs, not to mention what a playoff appearance would do for this city and this organization. This city went mental in the early 90s, and I'd love to see that again.
  17. To me it seems like he's mostly stating fact; the A's have won and made the playoffs recently, the Jays have not. To me it sounds like he's praising the A's more than he's dissing the Jays. Sure, maybe he could have left out the "I haven't been on that side of the coin" part, but is it really a surprise to anyone that the Jays haven't played meaningful baseball in 21 years? Not really.
  18. Welcome to the board. I agree that I wouldn't call it a fleecing; just seems like two teams taking different paths, whether it works out for Beane remains to be seen (sometimes I think that he out-thinks himself). The only reason I see it as being fleecing-esque is based on what else they may have been able to acquire if other teams knew that Donaldson was available. Granted, I don't know much about Baretto, but it seems like they could possibly have been able to acquire a better package than what the Jays gave up. Time will tell I suppose.
  19. I agree. Personally, I'm happy having Dickey and his contributions on this roster, but not at the expense of an additional roster spot. If Thole is the best backup guy based on his merit, so be it, but him getting a roster spot by default seems silly.
  20. I'm not a huge Brett Lawrie fan, but I don't see what the big deal is. The Jays haven't made the playoffs in a long time and the A's have. He's going to a situation where he's being asked to replace a guy who is much better than him, and is understandably trying to say things that will endear him to Oakland fans who are most likely pretty jaded by this deal. He also made an eloquent shout out to the Toronto fans. If this is his "miffed" reaction to being dealt, it's pretty tame, by Brett Lawrie standards.
  21. Hellickson must remind Dave Stewart of a young Joey Hamilton.
  22. In part based on two starting pitchers who don't require youth-related attributes like velocity to succeed. Other than Reyes, nothing too concerning, commitment-wise.
  23. But we're all in. Right?
  24. Still, as waivers claims go, not too bad. Have a bad feeling though that AA will replace Melky and Lind with Pillar and Smoak and then call it day.
