By naming him the starting CF with minimal experience or track record. And then deciding after 20 games that he needed to go down. Whether "gift" is the right word or not, if 20 games is enough to decide that he shouldn't be in the majors, then there should have been a stronger effort to address outfield depth from the onset.
In general terms, this team has a habit of giving the wrong guys too much rope (Thames, Pillar, Patterson) and other guys not enough (Snider, Pompey).
That's not to say it wasn't the right decision to send Pompey down; just that if you're considering that a month into the season when you're "all in", the backup plan shouldn't be to pencil Pillar in at CF every day.
