So the Rockies have signed Bryan Shaw and Jake McGee to 3/27 contracts, and are now closing in on a deal with Greg Holland. They're going to be paying that trio of relievers a combined $30+M year. That is NOT how you assemble a bullpen.

It's not like they missed out on selling anything with their fake competitive season. I'm getting pretty scared that ownership will prevent them from extracting value from JD though.

I don't disagree. I do think Ozuna is going return someone better regarded than Alford though, unless Chen is wrapped up in a deal. A deal with Toronto seems incredibly unlikely because Toronto won't move the guy Miami will be asking for and almost certainly won't take on a bunch of sunk money in Chen.

That might be enough 'value' but I'd be surprised if that ended up being the best offer for him. They'd have to really love Alford and SRF.

What is it that you think Miami would accept from Toronto? They’ll certainly ask for Vlad, and talks will die there.

This is the first offseason in three years where the 'talk about winning, and field the best team you can while making no long-term commitments' strategy could actually hurt the future. It hasn't yet cost them anything to make a fake effort to compete while really looking at 2019 and beyond, but JD's looming free agency is a situation where the sooner decisive action is taken, the better things will look for the future. I don't really care whether it's a trade or extension, but his trade value is going to drop by a lot between now and July, and it would be a shame to waste an opportunity at a big haul because you're putting on a dog and pony show for the casual fans.

Yeah, I'm getting that impression too. I think it's the right move, but I'm hoping we don't lose JD via free agency just keep up appearances.

Does Prado have enough negative value? He's owed 2/28.5, but that's not entirely sunk cost. He probably projects at like 3 wins over the next couple of years, which gets him a lot of the way to that 28.5M he's owed. Chen is the big one - he's owed 3/52 and they don't even know if/when he'll pitch again.

I don't think it's an easy decision. If they can get 2 wins from Torres for 550k, and that helps them win now while resetting their luxury tax, that might be well worth paying him $ a year earlier. I dunno what the math looks like, but they seem motivated to get under the tax this year.
