I kind of think what happened is that Grant saw that McKinney's ZiPS projections were similar to Melvin Upton's, and then just ran with it instead of admitting he made an inconsequential mistake.

Weird year for the bullpen so far. Outside of Romano, who was excellent across the board before getting hurt, it's a bunch of guys with sparkling ERAs that look like mirages. Dolis, Bass, Cole, Hatch, and Borucki all have ERAs under 3 and xFIPs over 4, and Hatch and Borucki are over 5. We've seen Kay's terrible pitching bite him recently, and the team is in trouble if the same happens to the others.

Most years one or two teams that finish under 0.500 (after 162 games!) are going to make the playoffs. I can’t wait for the 80-82 Orioles to fluke their way to a WS win. Manfred has just cheapened WS titles.

Great, MLB is the NHL now. Only worse because they have 162 games to separate the good teams from the bad instead of 82.

I don't know where to find data on this, but it seems like the trend of using a 1-2 inning reliever to open a game is a lot less prevalent than it was last year.

You're selling their front office short because you don't like the way they're run at the ownership level. They're on a 13-year run of fielding competitive teams with what I'm guessing is the lowest payroll in baseball over that stretch. It's not good for baseball and it's not entertaining to watch, but you'd have a hard time convincing me that they don't have one of the best-performing front-offices in the league.

The current Rays suck to watch. It's largely a bunch of platoon-y players, starters they only ask to go 4-5 innings, and long relievers. Almost none of their current contributors will even be with the team in 3 years. Being a fan of that team would be awful. The 2008-2013 Rays were a lot of fun. Always a deep rotation featuring guys like Price/Shields/Garza and later on Archer and Moore. And the lineup had actual long-term star appeal: Longoria was on a HoF trajectory, Zobrist was low-key great, Crawford was an exciting lead-off hitter, Jennings and Upton were young and exciting and contributed despite never really reaching their potential. Pena was a middle of the order monster for a few years. And the bullpen was always lights out.

So what are we doing with the consolation bracket? It's not automatic like it was in Yahoo, so we don't have to bother if we don't want to. No consolation matches at all? Just a 3rd place matchup between the semi-finals losers?

I blame Alex Anthopoulos for all of this. I can't find anthopoulosfatwaddle.gif, but he set the tone years ago that obesity was acceptable even at the highest levels of the org, and we're still feeling the effects. Thankfully, Mark Shapiro seems like the kind of guy who would have bullied soft-bodies in high school, so I'm sure he's taken steps to ensure proper shaming of professional athletes with Rosie O'Donnell's physique. Culture changes take time.
