  1. Ethier has put up 1.7 WAR so far this year, is plus defensively in LF, and saves 4M / year over Reyes for the same term. Rollins is just flat out struggling this year offensively, but it's the final year of his contract and he has an excellent track record. Maybe getting him out of a pitcher's park will get him going. If not, play Goins. From the Dodger's perspective, Reyes is an upgrade over Rollins (at present), and Guerrero can take over in the field full time. I think it makes a certain amount of sense for both teams.
  2. I wonder if the Dodgers would do Rollins and Ethier for Reyes?
  3. Somewhat disagree. Starting Bello (Even. Carrera is just as cringe worthy imo) Starting Valencia at 3rd (Nope - Nothing wrong with giving Donaldson a half day off from time to time, and it doesn't happen often) Not starting Smoak (Nope - Smoak struggles against lefties. In other games though, completely agree) Not DHing Edwin (1/2 day off for Donaldson, no particular issue today. Other days, yes) Batting Bello 5th (Yeah) Batting Devon Travis 9th (Yeah) anyone disagree?
  4. "Duke is filling up the strike zone"... All 7 pitches outside the strike zone.
  5. Iwakuma might be an interesting target. Lowish salary, and will have only made a few starts by the trade deadline after being out most of the year. FA at end of the year I believe, and Seattle looks like they're going to be out of it. I'd have to think the price could be pretty reasonable.
  6. Lol Garcia. Talk about misjudging the wall.
  7. Nope, but at the same time Reyes DID start to slow down before crossing the plate. Donaldson should never have tried that though, and Reyes in fairness probably wasn't expecting it.
  8. The high home runs I remember that response to was Tony Batista. That guy loved the ball inside corner at his eyeballs...
  9. I believe Halladay has a fairly significant digestive problem. HGH probably wouldn't do anything to help.
  10. Not smart by Donaldson to tag up there. He would have been out before Reyes crossed the plate if the ball wasn't booted.
  11. I think he was something like -3 wins, but early stats weren't very comprehensive so that's mainly hand waving. Keep in mind that up until now, we haven't had enough data to really determine individual defense fairly (granted Jeter has a large enough body of work that it is probably pretty accurate for his career). With the new data systems now in place, we have defender's position, ball trajectory and velocity, speed, defender reaction times, etc (well we may not, but teams do). It should be possible to determine exact defensive ability to very good accuracy going forward.
  12. Not necessarily. It's possible most of the balls are hit right at defenders. I mean that's part of luck too. Don't get me wrong, I'm not railing against the advanced stats at all. I was mainly just pointing out that if we're talking about a player getting it done, we can't remove things like luck or we really change the argument. Removing that is needed for (most) other kinds of discussions though.
  13. You're really mixing two different things. You're saying that he hasn't really gotten it done, because if you remove luck, etc he's been slightly below average. Regardless of how he's done it (it can be pure luck), the actual results (run prevention) have been above average, which is "getting it done". That doesn't mean we can expect him to continue to do so going forward (advanced stats suggest not, at least until he curbs the walk rate). It also doesn't mean that he's outpitched his peers thus far in a neutral context. As for future health, I don't believe the sinker should cause him any additional issues, nor the curve. It seems health issues tend to come more from the cutter / slider.
  14. If that's the case, then Sanchez HAS gotten it done. 6 innings per start, and a 3.55 era. That doesn't mean the ERA is sustainable going forward of course.
  15. The graph North posted seems to suggest otherwise, although it wasn't clear if the graph looked at the babip off all pitches, or just off fastballs.
  16. All 0 for 100's are equal.
  17. Speaking of Boyd, his line from tonight: 7 innings, 6 hits, 2 runs, 1 walk, 8 k's, 1 home run. Nice to see he isn't moping around.
  18. You should look into the Julia language as well as R. (http://julialang.org/) I haven't had time to develop my stuff yet (my other project is almost finished though I think, so I should be able to soon). I'm planning on trying out Julia when I do my pitchfx database and analysis programs.
  19. I believe both forms are actually correct.
  20. It's the 8th with a no hitter going. Unless we break it up, they won't be pulling him.
  21. That might be the worst drive of the game I've ever seen.
  22. Is Bautista even the strongest arm of the two right now? He's still not throwing anywhere close to 100%.
  23. Carrera's defense is actually kind of interesting. His UZR/150: LF: -23.4, RF: 27.5, CF: -34.2 Maybe we should play him in RF and Bautista in LF until Pompey or Saunders comes back.
  24. He's in the wrong profession. Catch and release is for avid fisherman. Seriously, I think I actually prefer Colabello out there.
