  1. It could be worse, they could be the Mariners. You know, a team full of 1st baseman and DH's.
  2. Griffey has 630 career home runs, just shy of 3k career hits, was a great defender up until the last few years of his career, and put up 77.7 WAR. I'm not sure how he could be significantly overrated. I don't think Jeter deserves most of the crap he gets around here either. He shouldn't have won some of the GG he did, and he should have been moved off SS a number of years ago. I'm not sure you can blame him for either of those things though.
  3. I saw an article yesterday that said Shields is being actively shopped around.
  4. It didn't stop them from using him as their primary catcher from 2008 to 2010, and he may be one of the only available options they could pick up that wouldn't cost them something they would hate parting with. His framing numbers also probably improve considerably with them, since most of their pitchers have excellent command. It's tough to frame pitches when you have no freaking idea where they're going to be thrown.
  5. Actually a Navarro for Dejesus swap could make some sense. Rene Rivera's bat might be worse than Zunino's, and the Rays have the outfield depth for it to make sense for them. Both players are on expiring contracts.
  6. I'm not even sure what a fit would be if Seattle is looking to add, unless they sent Happ back our way again for him. That's about the only thing I can see that would make any kind of sense in that scenario. If Seattle falls out of it, Austin Jackson could be somewhat interesting as a short term fix for us in the field though.
  7. They're 7.5 games out and have a terrible offense AND terrible defense. Would Navarro help a little with the offense, sure, but they still don't sniff the playoffs with him imo. I highly doubt they'd have interest, barring a fluky winning streak prior to the deadline (and frankly they could probably easily get Navarro without giving up Iwakuma if that was the case).
  8. If the Mariners are trading Iwakuma, it's because they're out of the race. They'd have no motivation to take another player who's a rental in return. I DO like the idea of getting Iwakuma though, and I think he should be available without giving up one of our elite prospects.
  9. Not all player contracts are insured.
  10. No, I'm making an observation. If he IS sick and playing like this, Gibbons should have lifted him. I just thought is was interesting. I can't recall ever seeing him sweat like that before.
  11. Reyes is sweating like crazy out there. Considering he should be used to the heat, I'm wondering if he may be sick. Would explain a lot (today at least).
  12. Some courses on R, and using it with stats and machine learning. Looks like the intro course and a few other select ones are free. For the rest you have to subscribe ($25/month, cancel any time). I haven't gone through any yet so I can't speak to the quality, but thought people might be interested. https://www.datacamp.com/courses/free-introduction-to-r
  13. Yes, I know that. It means one of two things. Either it's a statistical anomaly (certainly mathematically possible, but I sure as hell wouldn't bet on it given the larger sample size), or there's another factor that wRC+ isn't capturing. It's a very VERY large difference. Maybe he simply sees the ball better in Coors, who the hell knows. If I'm looking at trading for him, I'm paying a lot more attention to the road number though. If it was just a season's worth of at-bats or something, it would be a different story. For whatever it's worth, league average is generally between 5% and 10% higher wRC+ for players at home over the road.
  14. The problem isn't so much the acquisition cost as the salary cost. He HAS to get back to being a big time player to justify what he's making, and that's certainly nowhere close to guaranteed. His career 100 wRC+ away from Coors isn't encouraging either, in relation to salary, and neither is his defense.
  15. He's limping pretty badly still. Hopefully he can continue, but I wouldn't be surprised if he couldn't come back out for the second.
  16. Last year was a ton of injuries. This year, he's been heating up quite a bit as the season has been progressing. His wRC+ by month this year: 45, 73, 116, 161. His numbers on the year would actually be fine (although still not quite Cargo like) if he wasn't inexplicably putting up a -9 wRC+ vs lefties.
  17. Unless we can get someone controllable for a few years, we should try to trade for Latos and Iwakuma. Both should be decent rotation upgrades, and I don't think either would cost one of our top prospects. Sanchez moves to the pen and solidifies that (and the pen is really starting to get it together anyway).
  18. Hamels isn't a rental, and I think Chapman is controllable through 2016 too isn't he?
  19. I wouldn't be too happy about trading Sanchez for a 2ish month rental, and definitely not Norris. Now if we get someone good and controllable for a few years, sure.
  20. He's never been a big strikeout guy in the minors, so you had to figure it would come down. 15% to 16% is probably about right. It would be nice if he could get the walk rate up a little more, but at least it's moving in the right direction.
  21. No one generally does. That's why it's called great pitching.
  22. I wasn't paying terribly close attention, but I think it was Travis that made the relay throw.
  23. Did I just see 85mph from Dickey?
  24. Both can veto trades, and neither would have a reason not to.
  25. Ethier has put up 1.7 WAR so far this year, is plus defensively in LF, and saves 4M / year over Reyes for the same term. Rollins is just flat out struggling this year offensively, but it's the final year of his contract and he has an excellent track record. Maybe getting him out of a pitcher's park will get him going. If not, play Goins. From the Dodger's perspective, Reyes is an upgrade over Rollins (at present), and Guerrero can take over in the field full time. I think it makes a certain amount of sense for both teams.
