Still don't really understand what the confusion was that led to that kind of delay.

The Blue Jays threw to the wrong base and the guy scored before the appeal at first and wasn't himself appealed. What's the confusion?

What is Schneider talking about regarding them not having a chance to appeal the guy at third? Once Vlad stepped on the bag at first there was no chance to appeal anymore, the inning was over. Even if they tried to appeal at third there's nothing to appeal. There's no fourth out in baseball.

Ridiculous that people were confused and ridiculous that the delay was that long. This was pretty simple baseball.

How is doubling off the runner at first base throwing to the wrong base? Also the runner at third base did not tag up yet the run still counted.  You dont see why this would cause confusion?

I think even after the 3rd out was recorded at 1st they could have appealed to 3rd to get it on the record that the runner left early (or in this case didn't tag at all) so they would officially wave off the run. Maybe I'm wrong. They didn't because the ump made the call to wave off the run even though it wasn't and everyone left the field thinking it was over. Just a clusterf*** all around.

I still think the ump should be able to make that call without an appeal when it's as blatant as this was.

Jays claim several players were asking for an appeal but the umps waved off the run and instructed them to go to the dugout and that they would discuss. Ostensibly denying the opportunity to appeal.

If that's true then that is ********. I guess lesson learned is when there's weird things happening just throw the ball around the horn and touch every base to be sure but still dumb as hell

Anyway, it's the talk of baseball right now. I'm watching the Angels/Rangers game and they said they were going to talk about it on their postgame lol. It's all over everywhere.

I got home and tuned in while it was being reviewed in New York and I was so confused what was going on. After the replay I was even more confused. It just seems nonsensical to award a run without even tagging.

Watched it again and from numerous angles, Bateman made the catch and looked a little confused so he threw the ball to Josh Smith at 2nd who then threw to 1st for the 3rd out.  After Bateman made the catch but before the 3rd out was made the runner at 3rd scored. (makes no difference if he tagged or not)

SWR and BV were the first ones off the field followed immediately by the rest of the Jays, I didn't see umps make any motion - they remained on the field.

I think everyone was distracted at both runners taking off with only 1 out

Had Bateman come up firing to 1st that run might not have counted

The runner at 3rd just left early so it's up to the fielding team to appeal, it's like a runner missing a base or back tracking and forgetting to re-touch.  No different - if u don't appeal the play stands.

Baseball.

Its no different than if a guy leaves early before a catch and the defense doesnt appeal. He scores without tagging up.

The 4th out rule is on the books for this exact play

I get it but leaving early is really the only time it's used. I feel like the ump should be able to make a judgement call if a tag attempt is not even made and the guy is 4 feet off the bag but I guess it opens up other crap in that case. Seems silly but it's the rule. Even if told not to appeal they should have just done it anyway I guess.

Because the right base to ensure the run didn't score was third base.

The runner at 3rd scored as a result of going to the wrong base. You have to appeal, why were they throwing to first base to begin with? Because they are appealing. Everybody understands the appeal play.

If you understand why they were throwing to first to get the third out you should likewise understand why they should have been throwing to third instead.
