I don't think there's anything wrong with his health. Throwing strikes has never been his strength and he's just really going through it with his release point. Tough to be repeatable with that delivery. Also not being bailed out as much by hitters as they learn to be more patient with him. Dude's just going to have to learn better command. When he's around the zone he's tough. jaysblue 1

He was always like that in the minors, even in his first few starts in the bigs last year. People are swayed by his elite starts in the playoffs but we shouldn’t expect that to be the norm. jaysblue 1

Yeah, I had to relook at his career numbers, and throwing strikes has never exactly been a major strength of his. He’s always had elevated BB/9 rates, so the control issues aren’t coming completely out of nowhere. That said, this was already his second 7-walk performance of the season, and he’s also had outings with 6 and 5 walks. At some point, that becomes more than just a one-off bad command day. You can live with occasional wildness if the stuff is good enough, but you can’t have these blowup walk performances happening every couple of starts. That puts way too much pressure on the bullpen and makes it almost impossible to consistently win games he starts. Stangstag 1

M.E. Verified Member Posted yesterday at 02:31 PM Posted yesterday at 02:31 PM Starting to feel like Trey Manoah. also, why after throwing 12 of 13 balls to start game not one guy goes to the mound to talk to him. Seems like if he was having the balance issues they describe they saw it then.

Not sure if we see that from Yesavage right out of the gate, especially with the high BB/9 rates.

Like Stang said earlier, his postseason performance probably set expectations sky-high among fans and media. A lot of us likely thought he could step in right away as a potential #1/#2 starter, or maybe even have a Paul Skenes-type early impact. But in reality, if the BB/9 remains a concern and we’re seeing 6- or 7-walk outings every so often, some of his starts are going to be frustrating while he works through the growing pains. The encouraging part is that he’s still only 22, so there’s plenty of time for him to mature, refine the command, and correct some of these issues. But if the BB/9 sits in the mid-to-high 4s long term, that probably caps his ceiling closer to a #3/#4 starter. If he can bring the walks down while maintaining the strong K/9 rates, then you can start talking about him as a solid #2 or even a 1A-type arm for stretches. Yeah, it's evolved or die for him. Let's hope for the former. Petey hopefully has strategies in place.
