Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted March 13 Posted March 13 Varsho looks like hes about to go for a 250M contract. Him being able to step up offensively is massively needed and seems like hes ready for the job.

The defense can evaporate quickly and we know the bat js inconsistent. I probably like Varsho more than anyone on this board but i dont think you go over like 100mil for him, and even that is pushing it
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted March 14 Posted March 14 Hard to see either of these teams getting past the DR

The only way that a $150 million deal for Varsho becomes remotely possible is if he produces a crazy 5/6 etc. win season in his platform year, and that's a player I'd like to keep around long term if possible. His defense is obviously going to drop off at some point during the contract but he's at such a high level that it's not going to completely evaporate overnight barring some sort of catastrophic injury. Where Varsho gets his value from reads and routes moreso than speed I wonder if his defense will persist similar to KK.

While Varsho isn't a true burner I believe he benefits from elite burst/acceleration and that's part of what allows him to obtain the types of jumps he produces in the outfield. I do expect once the wheels start to drop off a bit he'd likely provide well above average range in a corner but the arm isn't likely suitable to right field post surgery and he would be limited to left field only.
Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted March 19 Posted March 19 Varsho going for a 5/6 WAR season. Hope he can stay healthy and then we can debate how much it'll take to keep him longterm.
Spanky__99 Old-Timey Member Posted March 20 Posted March 20 Scherzer's line 5 IP 2 H 2 BB 3K, old man looks sharp. Kasevich a couple more doubles, hope this kid has a great year, sure had a great ST. 2 more games and we go North!!!

glory Old-Timey Member Posted March 20 Posted March 20 Leo Jimenez has not had a good spring. A good ST probably would have given him the inside track on a bench spot, but that might not be the case anymore. Much like the Rule 5 scenario with pitching, the Jays aren't in a position to carry a marginal player just to avoid losing them. They need to bring the best guys up. My guess is they try to sneak Jimenez down or trade him in the next few days. In hindsight, adding a RHB instead of Jesus Sanchez probably would have made more sense because now it's Sanchez-Varsho-Barger in the OF with Lukes on the bench. A Refsynder type who mashes LHP would have been ideal. More likely we will see a Sanchez/DS platoon with Gimenez playing mostly everyday and Lukes filling in the gaps. I guess one positive is that it might mean a reduced role for Straw (strictly used in a pinch runner/defensive replacement role) with Lukes as the 4th OF.

Im hoping we give Eloy a brief shot as a RHB against lefties. Put Springer in LF, Eloy DH, Schneids at 2B against lefties.

gruber9292 Verified Member Posted March 21 Posted March 21 It's hard to understand some of the narratives regarding Sanchez. How is it that some view him as the LF starter vs RHP over Lukes? The only thing that Sanchez has over Lukes is power but everything else favours Lukes. Like I said last year, when Lukes bats second, the offence hums. Better on base and contact skills (by quit a bit). Defensively, Sanchez is not in the same league as Lukes. His arm is better but Sanchez couldn't track a deep fly ball if his life depended on it. Like Ive been saying, Lukes was just a starter for a team that went to the world series while Houston was ok in trading Sanchez to a fellow contender. Sanchez needs to work his way up as a starter and/or Lukes needs to work his way to the bench. Basically, its Lukes spot to lose and/or Sanchez's job to earn it Spanky__99 1

If Lukes is superior he will win the job before June Spanky__99 1
