You're probably making like 50K a year and have to work basically every day in the summer. I only know the salary of one person at The Athletic and it's a lot more than $50k a year. I'd say closer to double that. Not a fortune by any means but a good salary. Though I have no idea if that's average, below average, or above average within the company.
Omar Old-Timey Member Posted March 2, 2025 Posted March 2, 2025 I think Stoeten gets a bad rap sometimes. Perhaps he is one those writers that is best taken in homeopathic doses. I think he likely has an account on the here, we just have to figure out who it is. Terminator and Spanky99 2

Laika Community Moderator Posted March 2, 2025 Posted March 2, 2025 six figures for a sports writer is pretty high, but no doubt some of the heavy hitters make good money. most beat writers are closer to entry level writer salaries

I recall there was discussion that they were attempting to hire a new writer. I used to receive a ton of value from my Athletic subscription as there were the aforementioned 3 Blue Jays centric writers along with several Flames writers as well, but not it's down to zero for each. A large chunk of the Blue Jays coverage now is basically Ken Rosenthal dunking on the organization at every possible opportunity which is not something I'm interested in paying for as I could read Steve Simmons for free if I was actually interested in that kind of content. I saw a post suggesting that a reader had seen the job listing for the Athletic Jays beat writer and it was in the $75k range or thereabouts. Stangstag 1

I generally enjoy most of what Stoeten writes, my only real issue is some of the SJW nonsense he pushes at times.

In US dollars, that sounds about right. I suspect they have incentives based on social following, history of work, etc.

I like Shi, Zwelling, BNS, and Keegan Matheson. Keegan Matheson is shockingly good for being the official beat writer. Going to read his book when it comes out. Spanky99 1

I guess it’s more than 50 but that’s not much of a salary/ will go that far in a city like Toronto. Rent alone is like $2200/month to live in a dog crate condo lol.
