Should DFA Pop and bring in the new guy from San Diego

New guy from San Diego is already on the way up to cover Cabreras paternity leave

Posted
It's been about 3.5 months now of a tear and his wRC+ is 166. The same as it was in 2021. He's all the way back.

Love to see this but f***ing annoyed it’s happening in a season that doesn’t matter.

Praying Vlad looks like this for some duration next year

100% If we had this in 2022, we'd probably be talking about multiple playoff wins and the FO and team would be looked at completely differently. Perhaps in 2023 also.

Yeah, super annoying to us but to him he's just building up his resume for a very hefty pay day, as early as this off season because of it.

And yes, he's going to get paid...

6 WAR Vlad would make the 2025 Hail Mary a bit more realistic at least, especially if coupled with a bounce back from Bo. With his track record we can’t assume he will still be this guy next season, but with free agency looming, motivation shouldn’t be an issue. This does feel a little like the Devers situation in Boston. He got a big extension the off season before his walk year after Bloom was getting roasted by fans/media for other decisions (mainly Betts).

All good points IMO. Will Vlad get paid more than Devers is my question...

I agree it would be annoying to him, both because I do think he cares about performing, and also if he had done this the past two years, either he'd have signed a ridiculous extension already or would be expecting a 400 million dollar deal as a free agent.

I've noted this before but I do think now we can consider last year an outlier with some seriously bad luck, given the difference from his expected results. He would have otherwise probably have had a season between a 130 to 140 wRC+.

What's really interesting (to me at least) is putting Vlad and Soto right beside each other in comparisons.

Soto ... going to get paaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaid.

Vlad is just gonna get paid.

Better late than never.

Man - sometimes I forget just how good and how young Soto is. Guy had 9.3 WAR to his name by the end of his age 20 season. Dude was a BEAST from the get-go. He'll likely have 37 WAR for his career through age 25 (Vlad will have about 16.5 WAR). Soto could absolutely be an all-time great when it's all said and done.

Vlad should wind up with 20 bWAR by the end of the year, and I do feel like people look at that for HOF cases cause they have all the HOF numbers etc.

The fact that Soto has been able to sustain a .400+ OBP his entire career is kinda nuts. Slugging over .500 every year too minus 2022.

He has the consistency card that Vlad severely lacks.

Soto signing with the NYY would be a good move for him if the $ is right. He doesn't have to be "the guy" because Judge takes all the media heat about the team and can just play. OTOH I don't want the Yankees to have him.

My guess is he will, especially if he’s maintaining this level of performance. Obviously historically 1B are usually not given these massive contracts but I think Vlad will be one of the exceptions. Whether the Jays are the ones who give it to him is the bigger question. I would have been fine trading him this past deadline but since they didn’t and they intend to keep him for 2025, then I’m fully on the extend him train. I think I’m partially on that train because watching the Buffalo boys at the big league level and seeing just how average they look across the board makes me want to just extend any elite talent the team already has, and Vlad is the only one.

Not quite that much, but close... Vlad would have to play a competent 3rd or LF to get Devers money, who knows.

Devers is making $31M+ per season. No one knows but it wouldn't surprise me at all if Vladdy eclipses this number. 10/$330M is a possibility.

I legitimately think Vlad could provide at least Devers level of below average defense at third base with enough reps.

I'm like 6M AAV lighter on that matter, 10/270 is fair for a 1B. <--- Geez, this number keeps getting higher for me, but what do I know? :P

Yeah, I want to see it though. They seem to be trying it out lately.

He would definitely to make some serious improvements though. At this point he's currently sporting a -6% success rate added by outs above average, which is exactly the same as the disastrous level he provided over his time at the position in 2019.
