Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted July 5, 2024 Posted July 5, 2024 They should rename the team to the Toronto Keiths Too manly for this team. I could understand Toronto Gabriels.
Masterbather Verified Member Posted July 5, 2024 Posted July 5, 2024 It's very weird, but there is only 1 Keith now in MLB and MiLB, and it's not even his first name. Colt Keith is the only Keith in MLB and MiLB. I think it's a fine name, myself. Much better than Jordan, Noah, Levi and other androgynous names they give boys these days. If I had a son I would call him He-Man. Just so there's never any confusion.
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted July 5, 2024 Posted July 5, 2024 (edited) This isn't true and just a reflection of the rarity of this type of player. Often because if they are good enough to put up neutral defense at first they are good enough for another position (think Matt Carpenter for example). I mean 2002 "Money Scott Hatteburg", 2017 Joe Mauer, even Vlad 2024 was on track for 3 WAR even before his power showed up. The "no power bro" line drive hitting first basemen can be from -2 to 8 WAR just like any other. Rarer type of player but math is still math and it adds up if the player is contributing positively. It's not like they need all time defense, just need to have a -0.5 WAR defense instead of -2... That isn't any different for the big time power guys like Rowdy and Vlad. 2022 Rowday and 2023 Vlad are 1 WAR players too despite 118 mph max exit V and 470 max distance (80 max power basically). LOL Find me a modern day 8 fWAR 1B with no power and not positve Defense. Please. Olerud is probably the closest you could name and he had both plus defense AND above average power in his 8 fWAR years The argument is not that a 1b cannot be useful without power, it's that as your power slips down, the 1B defense and every other aspect of the game has to go up to compensate for it. Horwitz likely has the ability right now to be as good as Vlad was when he was stuggling... probably. Horwitz probably has a 3 fWAR ceiling at 1b. That's not nothing, but it's not what you're targeting by any stretch. Edited July 5, 2024 by John_Havok
