Biggio had some fringe tools to begin with and they've eroded. He can't hit anymore. He's 29, past his physical prime. His positive WAR right now is partially a mirage from short sample defensive stats (he has negative defensive value in his career).

Collecting some walks and bloop singles against below average pitchers probably doesn't in fact help the team win as much as a raw WAR total would imply. Just hopeless against good pitching.

So this is a shot somehow?

Eh?

No, I think DFAing Biggio is a mistake when guys like Vogelbach are still here.

Biggio gives you defensive flex and speed. Horwitz gives you maybe the same OBP, likely the same or worse power, slowest footspeed on the team likely except for Kirk and Vogelbach, and no defensive utility.

Replacing Biggio with Horwitz is just dumb, unless Horwitz is set to magically increase his game power at the big league level

So essentially you’re just arguing to argue, jerk off. Even BTs said it’s funny how they built the team as they did, now changing that. So I said it may make sense they would put IKF on waivers and bail if there were takers for that $11m.

Where’s the toll there?

Still think IKF should be put on waivers?

I don’t rain on the parade when Jays are winning. He’s almost your guys new Cavan Biggio, who would also go over/below the .700 OPS mark frequently on hot/cold runs and elicit such posts

Agreed, not sure about Horwitz, but he deserves a chance.

I'm just generally wary of high OBP low power output guys with the gap in quality pitching from AAA to the majors, coupled with the lack of other tools.

I agree he deserves a chance though.

I know how you feel about Horwitz, we'll see about him. I know you have Olerud triggered, lol.

A dark day in baseball. Whatever team Biggio goes to will be my new favorite team.

Cavan's best bet is to spend the next year "supplementing" certain hormone levels and getting jacked.

Sign a 1 year deal in Japan or something.

Then making his triumphant return to Major League Baseball in 2026.

How can anyone still stan for this guy lol

Since 2021, nearly 4 years of sample size, he's been slashing .219/.327/.351 with below average defense.

He can take a walk, sure, but it comes at the expense of his BA because he just stands there with the bat on his shoulders hoping to get 4 balls and a walk. He's hopelessly overmatched at the plate and he isn't young anymore. He's entering his physical decline years.

He's starting to make money too. 4.21 mil this year and he'd be close to 6 next year. It was time to pull the plug years ago. We let loose guys like Otto Lopez to keep him around and it wasn't working.

He's fine as a 26th man though he was starting to make more than that. Or a platoon player on a bad team.

Japan could be good for him. I think best case scenario is to go to a contender with a s*** bench. Maybe the Braves or something.

It's too bad cause of how good he genuinely was those first couple of years.

Also it's interesting to see the number of people celebrating here, he was perfectly productive in the role he wound up having. And I think I would caution that we have a 2B/OF currently who everyone loves, with similar high strikeout numbers, a weakness for certain exploitable pitches, middling defensive numbers, a lack of prospect pedigree, who hits with margins that could lead to a precipitous drop in numbers right now. So we might be doing this again soon.

As as bench guy only, not a starter I'm cool with Biggio. He brings a high floor, versatility on D, speed and a decent baseball IQ. Not sure what else people want in a bench guy. As a starter... hell no. Yes, he makes too much money for the bench role, I get that and he'd probably be someone they'd non-tender after 2024 and try to re-sign at a lower number or lose him.

I like tools and versatility on the bench to fill very specific needs at a given time rather than trying to shoe-horn a 1b/DH in at 2nd because he might hit a few points higher in batting average.

Except that other guy showed far more potential with the bat than Biggio ever did, handles same sided pitching so isnt a platoon guy, and is much much cheaper and could be sent to AAA if that needed to happen unlike Biggio whos ego was too big to accept the fact he sucks ass and put his head down, go to AAA and earn his way back to MLB.

So no we will not be having that conversation about that other guy anytime soon.

Agree with all your points. The frustration with Biggio wasn’t that he was a versatile backup infielder, it was that everyone was dreaming on something more after his first couple years (I’m guilty as charged).

You might be right with Schneider, but there’s still the chance he could be a legit starting 2B - he deserves the ABs and opportunities to prove it out, especially at league minimum salary and especially given our lack of young controllable talent at the moment.

Well I was looking at their trajectory and first two years of the majors so lets see.

In AA Biggio had a 145 wRC+ at the age of 23 and 152 in 43 games the next year at AAA before being called up, which is higher than Schneider put up at any point in A, AA or AAA. He had a 149 wRC+ in Rookie ball.

In his two first and best seasons, Biggio hit better against RHs in his rookie season and then hit better against lefties in his second year but was still decent enough against righties (above average overall). In their first two seasons, weirdly enough Schneider has the worst split overall, with his numbers against lefties this year, which I would imagine doesn't last.

Biggio also spent a decent chunk of time in AAA in 2021 after struggling with the bat. So we was sent to AAA to work on things when that needed to happen. This is obviously a different point in time, with more seasons of service time accumulated so why would we be comparing that at all. Biggio obviously is capable of having his current utility role in the Majors, he was correct to decline it and will be going to the Dodgers in the same role.

It is impressive to be factually wrong about everything you write in a post.

I hope Schneider succeeds, I think he's a great dude, same way I though Biggio is as well. I wish Biggio had continued his solid start for us, and I hope Schneider avoids falling off the cliff. I'm just pointing out that his bat works on the margins just like Biggio's did, and we see that when he has rough stretches, like he is currently having.

He's really good at barreling the ball and waiting for his pitch, but there may be a point where pitchers adapt to him in a way that he struggles to adjust to.

Biggio is gone mainly because of his cost (performance, less so), and the Jays having cheaper options. It's that simple.

No. He was s*** that's why. You think they care about Biggio's piddly contract when they are in luxury tax threshold?

The Jays will be saving over $2M in salary for the reminder of the season on Biggio's contract, I know they were extremely close on the 1st Threshold of the luxury tax, is it possible this may bring them under the luxury tax now?

Now here comes the part when the Dodgers turn him into a valuable bench piece for the next 5 years.

They will use him as injury relief and then non tender him in the off season

Agree. if he is there after All Star break I would be surprised
