connorp Old-Timey Member Posted May 23, 2024 Posted May 23, 2024 I had no issue with the Green deal, though I wouldn't consider it a "bargain" like some others on here were raving about this past offseason. If Green stays healthy and returns to his prior form where he was a 1.5 - 2 WAR arm, fantastic. Obviously, there was a good amount of risk taken given that he's missed significant time and returning from TJS for a 30+ year old reliever. As well, teams take chances on high risk/reward type BP arms all the time, but they don't cost $10.5M. Look at the Red Sox signing Liam Hendriks this past offseason and when healthy he was a superior arm to Green. Yeah, I’m not part of the bargain team. They paid for a good RP
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted May 23, 2024 Posted May 23, 2024 Through 48 gms, IKF has been the top WAR contributor of the $50M AAV group they invested in this off season JT, KK, Y-Rod, Vogelbach, Green. It's really too bad we didn't sign Soler like most on here wanted. FA's are such a crap shoot. Most the FA signings this year have been awful so far (Montgomery, Snell, Candelario, Rodriguez, KK, Stro, Gurriel Jr., Garver, Heyward, Soler, Maeda, Turner, etc.). Outside of a very few each year, most FA's are just icing on the cake for teams. Guys who are helping put a core over the top. Most guys who are signed long term to be part of the core come with massive risk and $$$. The issue with this team is the core went rotten. We can debate who's fault that is (or if it's anyone's fault) all we want, but that's the issue. If Atkins was able to roll the dice and "hit" on most FA signings, he could mask the issue to an extent. That's been one of his strengths over the past 3-4 years. But no GM in history is immune to signing a FA bust or two. All FA's come with risk and probability of not delivering. Maybe Atkins was just lucky the past few years and that luck has run out. Again - this team could have signed Ohtani this year and we'd still be a "bad" team. I believe there's a lot more luck involved than people believe. LA signed Heyward and Teo this offseason. They used all their information, intelligence and scouting and the exact same people produced one good "hit" and a complete "whiff". Baseball isn't a perfect science.

Heyward was worth 2 WAR last year and has played 8 games, easy on the whiff talk lol
Governator Community Moderator Posted May 23, 2024 Posted May 23, 2024 My realistic take is that I don't believe we'll ever win a division with the current core.... so if we ever get a streak going this year I'd hope Atkins has his friends on speed dial to sell off before it's too late.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted May 23, 2024 Posted May 23, 2024 Heyward was worth 2 WAR last year and has played 8 games, easy on the whiff talk lol injury prone you say? LOL - I'm kidding. I whiffed and didn't see he'd only played 8 games. He does only project for 0.8 WAR this year though and I think (and always thought) there was major risk he'd be a pumpkin this year. I thought LA was just throwing away that money. Maybe he's a nice guy in the clubhouse and that's worth $9M for a contending team.

Baseball ain't a perfect science, but orgs like LA, Tampa, Atlanta, and now Baltimore seem to get things right at a much better rate than the rest of the league. Then you have teams like the Phillies and Rangers that pumped a ton of money into free agents and mostly got lucky that a couple diamond in the rough prospects turned into solid contributors.
