Ya so now it makes perfect sense to take him on when he's completely washed up at 40.

Again, I'm impartial and only want him on the team if he outperforms his peers. Otherwise, I don't give 2 f***s.

It's a minor league deal

You don't seem impartial. You seem mad online because Joey Votto didn't jizz maple syrup with Paxton threw a no-hitter, and because Joey Votto never publicly demanded a trade to the Blue Jays when he was good.

Not mad at all for giving him a tryout. It's awesome and I support all minor league deals since we have nothing to lose here.

I'm just speaking about giving him a potential roster spot over someone who could be more desevering solely because he's Votto. I don't got that attachment towards him, that's all.

If he makes the team based on merit then that'd be awesome.

Votto feels better physically than he has in years following rehab and strength training since the end of the season, C. Trent Rosecrans of The Athletic reports.

Wow I didn't realize he was in the best shape he's been in for years.

This is a stupid f***ing response and you should be ashamed.

Look at the projections FFS. Its not even close. Votto is 40 and washed

The Reds didn’t even want him anymore.

To be fair the Reds have a superior offense and too many guys to give at bats to

Goddammit

Really didn't want this

Oh well. Can't hurt anything I guess. Unless Schneider is told to play him even if he suxxx.

If we were talking about replacing prime David Ortiz with Votto I would get the concern from all you no-fun buzzkills.

But we are talking about replacing Danny Burgers lmao

My thoughts exactly. If Votto was signed to be the everyday DH then I’d have an issue with it, but to replace Vogelbach on the end of the bench? Even if Vogelbach at this point is better against RHP, the difference between the two in that role is so marginal that from a fan/entertainment/optics standpoint this is a no brainer decision.

Bingo.

The role is the 26th man, the difference in talent probably isn't that big (there's even a decent chance Votto is better), Votto brings vetrin presents for whatever that is worth, and on top of it all Votto is a HoFer and one of the best personalities in baseball the past 20 years. Unless he looks completely cooked this spring I think he's making the team.

What does this even mean? You seem very mad online about a minor league signing, too.

Don't mind this signing at all. Let him play, if he's washed he's washed. Remember when people thought Ortiz was done in his last few years? I think he hit 40 dongs his last year at age 50.

I don't see how this in any way is a feel good signing. Maybe for the Jays as a lotto ticket and a merchandise pusher but I don't see how *he* can feel good about this.

Give Vogelbach a pinch hitting opportunity on opening day then release him. Then he can be a two-time Blue Jays with a total of 6 plate appearances. That has to be some kind of record.

What do you guys think is the best case scenario for Votto on the field? And does anyone think he's likely to out produce Vogelbach?

Best case scenario is that the past two years were injury related and now that he's fully healthy he puts up a 2021 kind of season, but slightly worse to account for two years of aging.

Worst case scenario is he sucks for a month and gets cut for the AAA guy who is most deserving. Meanwhile Danny Burgers signs with another AL contender and hits 15 homers in a platoon role.

We're talking about a man still in his PRIME that can hit dingers off Gerrit Cole, to some old fart who can't even get a minor league deal. Let's get real here. Shake your head. Grow up.

The difference in projections are almost 20 points in wRC+, its not negligible

Im saying I don’t give a s*** that its Joey votto, he’s dogwater at this point. Vogelbach would be a much better bench piece. Look at any projections.

End of the day its the 26th spot so really who gives a f***.

TIL that Danny Burgers ever had a prime, let alone that he's still in it

Neither should make the team IMO

Believe in Spooner Horvitz

Not really. His last 5 years ops plus before that final season were: 154, 173, 159, 140 and 141.

I think you are misremembering

Who in the flying f*** is Eric Treuden and why is he in any of my feeds.

Not sure why anyone would be s*** talking a minor league deal like this. There’s no downside, but the slim chance for huge upside. Question is how much did the shoulder injury hurt him last year? The first 1/2 of month he came back from the DL he put up a 1.050 OPS. He obviously isn’t that good at this point, but his shoulder started acting up again, hard to point out when. I think health this year would be the deciding factor in what we’d get. I would not be all that surprised to see him put up a .800 OPS.

Especially given that he probably wouldn't be looked to for more than 300 PA or so as long as Turner is healthy and productive. Probably no starts against lefties, maybe limit his exposure to high-velo RHP too. I don't think it's a given that his skills have eroded to the point where he can't be a contributor in a very managed role. But also, it would just be so cool to have him around that I don't really care if it costs the team Daniel Vogelbach to give him a 1-2 month look.
