Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted February 16, 2024 Posted February 16, 2024 Davidi just tweeted it was a minor league deal. So thank goodness. I still think JD would have been the better gamble on a minor league deal. Thank god. I was up all night trying to find a way to defend this move and came up empty
justafan Verified Member Posted February 16, 2024 Posted February 16, 2024 All part of Atkins offseason plans of trying to make Chapman jealous by bluffing with these s***** 3bman signings. Schneider had a quote yesterday about the puzzle at 3b gonna be fun to solve. So they got to Schneider Anyone know what Chapman is asking?
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted February 16, 2024 Posted February 16, 2024 Can't lose on a minor league deal but I see no light for Eduardo. I don't even think it's a case where he was hurt. He just sucked. Yes, he was productive in 2022 but it is rare to see a statcast page that is "dead blue" like his 2023 page lmao. His shtick from his good years seems to have been finding barrels despite having middling or even below average raw power. One of these trajectory dudes. Maybe he can teach some of the tweener bats in AAA how to yank more dingers. Escobar is plan Z in case IKF, Espinal, Biggio, Bo, Schneider, Barger, Jimenez and Clement all die in separate car crashes on the way to the field.
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted February 16, 2024 Posted February 16, 2024 Anyone know what Chapman is asking? My guess would be somewhere around the 6/150 he was projected for my mlbtraderumours. I suspect he will end up closer to a 4/90-100 kind of deal with perhaps an option on the end.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted February 16, 2024 Posted February 16, 2024 You know damn well the Jays are going to use Escobar at some point as long as hes in the org so I’m actually rooting for a full season of IKF at 3B at this point (if they can’t bring Chapman back on a pillow contract).

THe only reason to bring up Escobar would be to ride the bench for a few weeks and then not care if they lost him via DFA. Minor league deal, this isnt the same as Tapia or Zimmer who were both already on the 40 man and got way too much rope.

Why would you assume this? I suspect he'll have clause that the Jays will release him if doesn't make the team out of STing.

Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted February 16, 2024 Posted February 16, 2024 Seems like a lot for a glove and an aging player! He'll get 4/80 guaranteed, so there's room. Jays offered him over a 100M at the end of the year, they declined, lol. Same thing as Edwin.
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted February 16, 2024 Posted February 16, 2024 Seems like a lot for a glove and an aging player! Indeed. It's almost like its obvious why he hasn't signed yet
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted February 16, 2024 Posted February 16, 2024 Out of ST, Johnny boy. yeah that's what I meant, as soon as the end of ST. I can't picture a guy like Escobar thinking he has a real shot at the 40 man looking at the glut of IF on the Jays roster. He'd have a better shot at that in Pittsburgh. But that's got it's own set of problems like... Pittsburgh

They also have a good young MIF. Yer dumn.
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted February 16, 2024 Posted February 16, 2024 I'm buying an Eduardo Escobar jersey this morning! Nice depth signing for ST and only a minor league deal, so not complaining.
Omar Old-Timey Member Posted February 16, 2024 Posted February 16, 2024 Let's keep loading up with guys north of 35 years old. Damn.

Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted February 16, 2024 Posted February 16, 2024 Mashes lefties, versatile defender, switch hitter, vetrin presents. We got our guy. Great signing.

Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted February 16, 2024 Posted February 16, 2024 That’s why I said as long as he’s in the org. I hope he opts out. Well obviously if he makes the team out of STing, they are going to use him to some extent. For that to happen, that probably means injuries to Biggio, Espinal, Schneider or IKF. Let's just hope nobody gets hurt and Escobar is let go after STing
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted February 16, 2024 Posted February 16, 2024 Escobar is just a potential stopgap until Gruber..... I mean Barger is deemed ready
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted February 16, 2024 Posted February 16, 2024 I don't seen any avenue for him on this roster. So I guess he's just here to have fun.

wilko Old-Timey Member Posted February 16, 2024 Posted February 16, 2024 Justin Turner is 39, the chance he has a severe groin pull in ST is very high I'm sure that can happen, but for the most part he's been pretty consistent with staying away from the injury bug. If he's going to be DH 95%? of the time.. I wouldn't be too worried about it. Put that fear into praying for Danny Jansen to stay healthy.
The_DH Verified Member Posted February 16, 2024 Posted February 16, 2024 A minor league flyer is a fine move and makes sense when we don't have a real 3b.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted February 16, 2024 Posted February 16, 2024 Escobar is just a potential stopgap until Gruber..... I mean Barger is deemed ready That's what I'm thinking. Let's say we trade Espinal, then we could give Escobar a crack at a bench role. Even last year when he sucked he still hit lefties to the tune of a .284/.319/.450 slashline in 116 PAs. His career line against LHP is similar. If he hits we can keep him, if not we can give Barger a try.
Eat My Shatkins Verified Member Posted February 16, 2024 Posted February 16, 2024 And you just know at some point he'll be up in the bigs getting every day ABs............ Even as a minor league deal this is a s*** move I think signing Eduardo Escobar to a MiLB deal is definitely a great reason to act like a whiny little bitch. But, when you ARE a whiny little bitch pretty much everything is a good reason to act like a whiny little bitch. You have to stay true to you.

He wasn't great last year defensively but was so in his career up to that point, and Espinal himself hits LHP pretty well. He's a better option at 3B vs LHP than IKF is, and he's making less than 3M.

Depends on what we could get for him. There is also Clement who is out of options. I think a trade would probably benefit us the most.
