wamco Verified Member Posted January 25, 2024 Posted January 25, 2024 Oh boy Eddie Rosario being the big DH addition would sum up this offseason nicely Would you label it aggressively average?
L54 Old-Timey Member Posted January 25, 2024 Posted January 25, 2024 Would you label it aggressively average? Impressively bad
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted January 25, 2024 Posted January 25, 2024 Impressively bad I can see the argument for labeling the offseason as being pretty mediocre or even disappointing but impressively bad? Impressively bad for me would have to consist of some sort of spending spree to sign some "top FAs" (in name only due to the weak FA class) to long term deals which handcuff the franchise for years moving forward. And given the lack of movement on the trade market, the same would apply there and impressively bad would have to be trading our top prospects for mediocre talent. Sometimes the best strategy is to be patient. Or to even do nothing.
wamco Verified Member Posted January 25, 2024 Posted January 25, 2024 I had actually meant Rosario, not sure about 5 to the fo’

If THIS IS IT then it is impressively bad But we are all assuming they sign at least one more player, and it will be a competent DH That would move it from impressively bad to somewhere in between mediocre and an emotional letdown

To be patient when you hardly made it in, didn’t win a playoff game (again), and your competition has gotten better, either through signings or a pipeline you don’t have. Idk man. Pretty lame cuck type stuff

Idk man. Pretty lame cuck type stuff We aren't the only ones being patient. It's an extremely slow moving market. 4 of the Top 10 FAs are still unsigned. Can't even think of a single significant trade other than Soto? I think we'll still see some action from the Jays.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted January 25, 2024 Posted January 25, 2024 If THIS IS IT then it is impressively bad But we are all assuming they sign at least one more player, and it will be a competent DH That would move it from impressively bad to somewhere in between mediocre and an emotional letdown It depends on how you grade it. On a curve with the understanding that both the FA market and trade market both suck I don't think it will end up being that bad. There are few teams that have had good offseasons. The Dodgers shoved a billion dollars at players and are considered one. The Yankees are another but it relies almost solely on trading for one year of a player, so how good of an offseason is it? Other teams that have had good offseason are smaller market teams spending nominal amounts on FAs for the first time in forever. But I suppose if you had high expectations, which got even higher after that fateful Ohtani Friday night, then yeah at best this offseason will be an emotional letdown. But after that there just wasn't much else to do which would stave off a letdown except trading Tiedemann and others for Soto or signing Bellinger to a 7 year deal.
wamco Verified Member Posted January 26, 2024 Posted January 26, 2024 With the supply of dh so vastly in excess of demand, realistically, how low could we really get a soler/turner/belt? Especially if Arizona grabs joc as rumored. Sucks for them but that’s the life of a Dh.

Should be cheap Honestly you could probably land Bauer and JDM for one year each 20M total 14M for the DH 6M for Bauer 5 wins for 20M and an AL East crown
Laika Community Moderator Posted January 26, 2024 Posted January 26, 2024 With the supply of dh so vastly in excess of demand, realistically, how low could we really get a soler/turner/belt? Especially if Arizona grabs joc as rumored. Sucks for them but that’s the life of a Dh. Joc's projected contracts were: ESPN - 1/$16M MLBTR - not on top 50 but implied 1/$12M Fangraphs Crowd Source - 2/$24M Fangraphs - 1/$12M His guarantee is 1/$12.5M so this isn't really evidence that the supply glut has led to price dips, yet. BUT Brandon Belt should be really cheap. Joey Votto should be free. So for Toronto... if they have an opportunity to get Bellinger or Chapman on a random pillow contract, they can probably squeeze Votto or Belt into the budget. So many ways Toronto could fill out the roster. OF options: Bellinger, Pham, Taylor, Hicks, Kemp, Meadows (DH), Soler (DH), Merrifield, Kike, Peralta, Grichuk, Duvall, Grossman, Pollock 1B/DH options: Soler, Turner, Belt, JDM, Votto, Santana, Winker, Choi, Cron, Smith, Cooper, Gurriel 3B options: Chapman, Urshela, Segura, Turner (DH), Kike, Longoria, Solano, Donaldson, Anderson, Mondesi (SS), Escobar Nearly infinite combinations! Many of these guys will be almost free, so they can make one solid investment then one free depth addition. Otto Lopez was horrible, has no options, so unfortunately he seems like a dead man walking on the 25man/40man so one addition is easy. For the second addition, I guess they would just option Horwitz and jetison someone like Brendon Little or Nathan Lukes from the 40man? Also probably not a big deal even though those guys look useful.

And will Toronto be desirable (I would think so as a hitter, not at all as a pitcher)
deanmike Verified Member Posted January 27, 2024 Posted January 27, 2024 You mean crowd source or the ones the writers do? This year was Ben Clemens. Both I find are preferable to pretty much any other yearly FA contract projections out there.
wamco Verified Member Posted January 27, 2024 Posted January 27, 2024 Question really is will any hitters be pushed to a minor league deal. And will Toronto be desirable (I would think so as a hitter, not at all as a pitcher) That’s what I’m wondering as well… I’d think you’d at least latch on as a bench bat for The players we are discussing tho, no? Except maybe votto/ Donaldson types. Do you stick Horwitz ,with his 1.0 ops vs righties in aaa last year, in aaa to give votto/donaldson types a chance at a dead cat bounce? Belt had a good year last year and deserves a role somewhere but like kk said he got more interest last offseason than this one. How much more is soler worth than belt?
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted January 27, 2024 Posted January 27, 2024 Glasnow says f*** you Starting Pitchers need to average more than 65 innings per year during their career in order for me to count it as significant. Sorry Tyler.

But in the end, the guys we have have to perform better offensively - you can't have 2 WAR from Vladdy. And we can't replace every one. It's hard for Shatkins to do much when you have so many underperforming players: Vlad, Springer, Daulton, Kirk and Jansen always being hurt. The Boras clients are asking crazy length and dollars - the tier down - none of that lot is exactly going to scare Baltimore, NYY, LAD. If you want to win you need some big thumpers and this team doesn't have that. It's a shame - with our pitching you really kind of miss those days with Bautista/EE/Donaldson to strike some fear in the opposing pitcher. This lineup has exactly no one you worry about as an opposing pitcher other than Bo Bichette and he's not a massive power threat. Soler probably makes the most sense but then why did they trade Teo away in the first place if they are just getting another right-handed power bat with even worse defensive value?

Teo was a free agent after last season so his trade would have zero bearing on whether a Soler addition makes sense.
