Spicy drama lol

That sucks when the team doesn't trust the pitchers instincts, they were lucky anyway to tie it in the top of the inning when Josh Naylor through behind Buxton and he sprinted home to tie the game

Baseball was better when nobody had data on anything

watching Mike Scioscia in game management used to drive me crazy, their catcher would look into the dugout for the sign - on every single pitch at least it seemed it was on every pitch. No wonder they sucked for so long - and still do long after he left.

And now a bunch of teams are doing it with coaches in the dugout having pitch coms. It’s almost like there’s too many hands on the wheel all making in-game decisions these days.

111 wRC+ Steamer projection for the rest of season.

Imagine keeping Craig's son over Otto

I guess when he had a 65 wRC+ in 350 PAs in AAA (0.085 ISO), it was difficult to see he'd eventually be sporting a .240 ISO at the ML level. SF got fooled too. Terrible org, terrible development 😉

gotta trust the players on the field - the pitcher and catcher to read the batter and adjust accordingly

I mean - maybe? I don't think you can assume every pitcher is good at reading bats (batters) or is going to optimize pitch sequencing better than a coach. In fact, I suspect at least 50% wouldn't.

What a pitcher will know over a coach in-game is what pitches feel better that particular game. Sometimes you can't quite find the release point on the slider or whatever and those may not be 100% confident in certain pitches or locations that game. I do wonder if coaches can pick up on that from the iPad with spin rates, release points, etc...

That said, do I want coaches calling every pitch? Not really - I don't love that.

Should catchers be able to do it as good or better than a coach? I think yes, but obviously not all of them will be able to, depending on their age/experience.

This is so lame. Was it a save situation? I’ve noticed they’ve been using him in non save spots too which is dumb. He’s like a top 3 nastiest reliever in the game, just give him the ninth

I haven't been following his usage. Are they trying to use him in situations when the game is on the line (regardless if that's the 7th or the 9th)? You don't support that approach? Prefer pitchers to have set rolls? I've always thought using your best pitchers when it matters the most was the right move, but it certainly seems like some pitchers struggle when they don't have a routine.

He seems to suck ass when he’s not in a save situation

Anecdotal. I have him on a couple fantasy teams so that’s how I’ve been monitoring him but that’s what I’ve seen

Interesting. You do see that when closers "get work" in blowout games, but you'd think in tied or close games he's perform the same as he would in a save situation.

What are the early returns on ATL deal sending CWS 5 players for Bummer? I see his FIP is solid and BB rate is down. Soroka has been pretty bad unfortunately. Haven’t really followed the other parts of the deal.

One of those ones that is hard to evaluate with WAR because Atlanta cared more about getting someone they thought was a good bet to be positive value while CHW just cared about sorting through a bunch of players that would probably suck as they try to find one or two decent keepers.

Bummer - 0.2 WAR in 15.2 innings

Shuster - 0.2 WAR in 18 innings

Soroka - horrendous

Shewmake - horrendous

Nicky Lopez - horrendous

Riley Gowens - good numbers in A+

So you could say it looks like a good one for CHW. They get Shuster, who seems to be an MLB arm and he is pre-arb, along with a so-so prospect in Gowens.

Bummer has options after this year but at $7M they aren't really worth anything.

Lopez, Soroka, Shewmake --- possibly irrelevant and will only stick on the Chicago 40 man if they fail to find viable alternatives. But I guess they have all year to continue working with Soroka. His 93 stuff+ is close enough to viable that maybe if he at some point finds average command, he could piece it together as an SP5. There are worthwhile SP5s with worse stuff+ numbers than 93.

Chris Sale today with another brilliant outing!

In 9 starts, he's 7-1 with a 2.22 ERA, 2.23 FIP and 0.86 WHIP over 56.2 innings with 70 K's and only 8 BB.

He's being used against other teams meat of the order, so yes, and L54's correct, some guys are just wired differently. Calling a pitch from the dugout is overkill, yuck.

I still can't believe AA gave up William Contreras

The best part of that trade is that Oakland decided they didn't need him, and Milwaukee was able to sneak in and get him for Esteury Ruiz

Contreras probably wasn't willing to sign his prime away for well under market value, so AA probably still considers that trade a win, but yeah, Contreras has looked better than Murphy since the trade. Maybe AA thought he was selling high.

I don't think the Braves wanted Contreras catching. They place a huge emphasis on C defense.

At the time of the trade Sean Murphy looked like the superior player and possibly the best C in the league.

That guy has a Ring and 50 WAR career already, despite all the injuries.

Him, Imanaga, and Suarez are probably the three front runners for the NL CY if the season ended today. Would be cool to see him win his first one at 35

I was happy to nab him for a late 1st couple years ago… oh wait, that’s actually when I was cheating moving players around 2 rosters… bitch:)

I believe it 100% affects guys. Some players can be used in any situation and some guys develop their whole persona around being the man or the closer. Jordan Romano for example
