Boras really screwed over his FA's this year. 3 of his high profile clients are still free agents and it's almost the end of spring training.

I feel like the league isn't at a stable place right now with pitching. Teams are burning through arms by squeezing every last ounce of velo and spin out of them on every pitch. And they don't want to commit to them because they know they're pushing them hard enough that they're going to break over the course of a long-term deal. There will probably need to be incentives put in place that reduce the amount of different pitchers available to teams over the course of a season, because right now they're treating them like completely disposable assets.

Never thought of it like this but I think you’re exactly right

Yeah, it’s got nothing to do with the pitch clock and the 2 seconds less of recovery between pitches. It’s throwing max effort with max torque for spin rates on every pitch for as many pitches as they can. It’s less of an issue for relievers since they only throw 20-30 pitches per outing max and have usually at least 1 if not 2 days off between appearances.

On one side…more velo and better spin generally = more success assuming you have a clue where it’s going. Getting those 15-18 outs before turning it over to the pen and multiple 1 inning maximum guys is what is winning games more often.

If suddenly tomorrow all the pitchers in baseball went back to 85-90% effort….scoring would go through the roof. Hitters would love it.

Maybe, or maybe the pitchers would stop grooving the ball while trying to eek out an extra 2 or 3 mph.

Apparently they told Chris Devenski he might be a starter for them. He’ll give them like 60 innings if 3.50 ERA ball, blow out his arm and never pitch in the majors again

I wonder if they meant "opener" or "bulk reliever"?

Yankees projections for 88 wins includes Rodon 3.1 / Cole 2.6 / Judge 6.7

Judge already hurting, Cole out for a couple months (at least) and Rodon looking like a washed has been.

More like an 81 win projection now maybe?

Let's hope

Command is still really hard. It would be foolish to assume that a large amount of pitchers would suddenly gain a few tiers of command simply because they are throwing with less effort.

Even thirty years ago when they weren't max effort there were still only a few guys with top command.

Cease to the Padres

That team has absolutely no direction

It's always the damn Padres who are making these blockbuster trades. They must have had the best farm system in the league or just great at making trades to be able to do this nonstop for years.

If this is the full return White Sox gain 2.1 BTV surplus value in this trade

The Padres are still projected to make the playoffs in the weak NL (relative to the AL). They were probably just ordered to slash payroll while still aiming to remain competitive on the field.

Their payroll was 254M last season with a luxury tax payroll of 280M (3rd threshold). Heading into this season they are no longer a tax team, with a projected payroll of 167M. They slashed payroll by 87M and won't be a tax team either, while still being projected to make the playoffs. Cease with a salary of only 8M this season (obvious steal compared to the level of player he is), plus another year of team control after this one, makes a lot of sense for a team like that.

They're being managed like an impulsive person's dynasty league team

I guess. They're worse though, and burning good prospects to get cheaper and slightly worse.

They could have gone about this differently.

Objectively a weird move for the Padres, but…thank you Preller.
