And yes, I’m jealous because I’m not in Florida at ST and instead am sitting in a -25 freezing hellhole of Saskatchewan.

Definitely a SS in his day…look at that form!

Well that's hilarious. But yes - that form is so clean. Nice flat back, fields it out in front. Textbook. I had the sleeves and shorts all pulled up, hat off - trying to get some f***ing sun at the game (which was successful). That's my oldest boy in the Acuna jersey. He just came back from getting Chick-Fil-A. Ball hit off his foot and rolled right to me. You're going to pay for this one John :)

Finally

Pfft. Manfred is destroying baseball again!

Scherzer has a completely weird take on it though…they aren’t “too scared to let pitchers fail” like they’re trying to protect the pitchers ego or something, they’re doing it because they don’t want to give up any more runs… which happens a lot more often the third time through the order for almost every pitcher in baseball except the very best. It’s always been that way. Now teams just realize it’s better to take a guy out sooner rather than later when it comes to winning games.

The quote from Dave Roberts sums it up perfectly… “From a fan perspective, yeah, to see a guy in there to go seven, eight innings, I absolutely get it. Doesn’t necessarily help you win baseball games, and I’m in the business of winning games."

O's sign Kolton Wong to a minor league deal. Nice lottery ticket for them. He's 1 year removed from B2B 2.5 WAR seasons. That said, he doesn't project well and is entering age 33 season. Most 2nd basemen fall off the cliff in their early 30's, so he's probably done.

He was bafflingly bad last year. Can’t possibly be worse

Hopefully they cut rosters back down to 25 while they’re at it. A 5-man bench is silly

Will never get a cut back of roster players with a players union around.

There also the issue that guys being optioned up and down is now capped at 5 times per year, so trimming the amount of pitchers on a roster would be greatly impacted by that cap

The Jays are gonna be pissed about this lol

They already hate the 13 pitcher maximum to the point where I almost wonder if their refusal to use the 13th position player on the roster since the 13 pitcher rule was implemented is a silent protest to the existence of the rule.

Why do you say this? The Jays have one of the best rotation in the majors, full of pitchers who are equipped to go deeper into games. If this rule was in place this year, it would only benefit them. That said, I think most teams currently appreciate having extra space in their bullpen for an extra arm. It's a f***ton easier to find another flame throwing RP right now than it is to find starters who can go through a lineup a 3rd time.

Pretty much this, they have basically outright said before that they would prefer to carry 14 arms if they had the choice.

I think every team would say the same thing. Every team has a few pitchers with options who are going to ride the buses and go between AAA and the majors all year alone (which is how they replicate having 14 or 15 pitching spots available to them).

Then expand the league by 4 teams. Brings back scoring and the league doesn't end up losing veterans like Votto. It's a win-win for everyone but traditionalists.

"Big league starters averaged 15.4 outs and 85.1 pitches last year, according to Sportradar, and 15.6 outs and 84.9 pitches in 2022. But the numbers were 17.4 and 93.1 as late as 2015, and 17.8 and 98.6 in 2000."

Wow, I knew teams were much more cautious on how many times batters see their starters, but I'm surprised the average is now down to 85 pitches. Basically a guy who can effectively pitch six innings on average (without the yank) is now a stud, whereas that was just an average outcome in 2015.

I wonder how they factor in openers / bullpen days, because clearly those are much more common than in yesteryears.

Yeah, a lot of this forum thinks it's a Jay specific thing, but it's league wide.

Really? People think it's a Jays thing? Is this because of the Berrios BS? Jays starters threw like the 3rd most innings in baseball last year.

Of all the starters, I thought they could have given Kikuchi a bit more length at certain times last year. Turns out he was slightly above league average in outs per start.

They mentioned this during the telecast, he's free reign apparently.
