Vomit.

Well I think we're stuck with him. In no universe should the Jays dole out $150m/5 to Chapman. If our current core of players keep hitting like absolute shyte then we're not going anywhere anyway. So it's tough to get a free agent when all the free agents are mediocre and cost too much.

And since we have a bottom 5 farm system if we do make a trade to land a "star" player who can actually help the team - not mediocrities like a Chapman but an actual star - who is controllable for 3 years - that's going to start without top 3 prospects + and then we have nothing after that to trade.

So they'll probably sign one of the mediocrities on the FA market for 1-2 years - the 2nd year is the Canadian tax and hope Springer can actually get around on 95mph fastballs - but I don't know too many people who have better hand eye coordination as they get older.

The positive is I am a pitching and defense kind of a guy and The Jays look like one of the best teams in all of baseball when it comes to pitching and defence. I mean LAA had Trout and Ohtani and never won s*** in an easier division. So I'll take pitching.

Barger will be the new Gruber.

Not as bad as you'd think.

Polanco = +$9.4M

Topa = +$7M

Gonzalez = +11M

DeSclafani = -$1.1M

+$7.5M for the Twinkies

Similar value from Toronto would be something like Swanson + Barger or Leo Jimenez

Mariners are also covering all of the 6M they owed on Desclafani, and apparently some of Topa's 1.25M as well

Damn. The Twins killed it here.

But, that happens when the infielder FA market is so weak

M's look pretty dumb for trading Suarez for nothing then paying a big premium for Polanco to fill the empty 3B spot. DiPoto seems to just kind of do things without any kind of plan

Yeah doesn’t really make any sense.

I get trading Suarez. His 3.2 WAR was defensive metric-fueled fugazi. Seems like the bottom could fall out on him any year now.

On top of it they've got Luis Urias who is younger, cheaper and projects similarly. They seem a little cash strapped (or so I thought until they sent Manny 7.5 mil) so getting rid of Suarez and his salary made sense.

But in this infield market I have no idea why they rushed to trade Suarez for a couple of turds in what amounts to a straight salary dump. Seems like Suarez could have gotten them something.

Very Dipoto like move.

Mariners are also going to feel the effects of constantly trading relievers to try and patch the holes in their lineup. Trent Thornton is currently listed as their 7th inning guy on Roster Resource lol.

Kikuchi + Orelvis + Richard/Garica + Cash would have been a decent comparison offer from the Jays. Happy they didnt.

More like White, Martinez and Garcia + cash, still a high price for Polanco when they should've just held on to Suarez, Dipoto is a dingleberry. lol... Jays wouldn't be in on this type of deal at all.

They might be very overconfident in their ability to create good relievers

They've done it a few times for a few years but really pushing the theory now

Their off-season has been so convoluted and I'm not sure they improved by more than one win

Trash org tbh

Sort of does seem like they've been active for the sake of being active. I don't see a clear improvement to their roster

BA's report on the trade was quite negative on Gonzalez. Well below average runner at 20 yrs old, the bat will need to be elite.

Gabriel Gonzalez, OF

Age: 20

Gonzalez ranked as the Mariners’ No. 5 prospect in the just updated Mariners Top 30 Prospects list. He has two standout tools, as he has plus power and a plus-plus arm. He’s slowed down pretty quickly since signing his first pro contract and is now a well below-average runner. That limited speed also limits his range as a corner outfielder. For his limitations, Gonzalez’s bat speed, power potential and bat-to-ball skills give him a chance to be an above-average offensive force if he can improve his pitch selection.

Yikes. Yeah, this sounds like a possible 1B/DH profile.

Even lumbering RF like Hunter Renfroe tend to enter the league with average-ish sprint speed at least.

The four remaining FA’s from the MLBTR top 10 are all Boras clients:

2) Bellinger

4) Snell

6) Montgomery

7) Chapman

Someone has to blink eventually

Remember Sorrow's source was saying Jays are working on a big trade. Something could yet happen to clear some salary.

Only trades that would clear enough payroll to make a difference would be Springer or a SP that we want to keep

They probably did work on some trades that never happened.

I wouldn't expect a trade, my source is no longer with the Jays but I'm fairly confidant that things fell apart during discussions. This off season is f***ed for valuations.

They are excellent at drafting and might be counting on a lot of internal help that is less than 6 months to a year away.

They are great at developing PITCHING but a lot of it graduated in 2023.

Surely they will pump out some more arms but I am not seeing any ready-made bats to help them out. Most of their interest bats are not 2024 ETAs.

Well s***...

Yeah this doesn't sound like good news for the Jays or AL East. Angelos ownership was the one bright spot to Baltimore's rise as it meant they were going to cheap out on everything.

That is why I said a 1yr to 6 months. They have a bunch of non-pitcher solid specs who will probably debut mid year 2024 and 2025.

Watch them immediately sign Trevor Bauer and Blake Snell and win 105 games

Even worse would be them locking up their elite specs long term on the cheap a la AA. Detroit and Milwaukee.
