Those teams don't have the foresight of having a need for him you mean. It's like being the Blue Jays and going into the season with this lineup. We all know damn well we're going to need offense so we'll just end up spending prospects for something that's already known if we don't do it now.

No.

1. Chapman is ready to fall off a cliff / is a potential DFA by June candidate

2. Pitchers get injured and RP are volatile and can suck, that's when guys like Chapman, and many others like him, IF they are pitching effectively, become trade targets

Thought for sure he was going to the Orioles. They’re about out of options for mid-tier SPs now

But they just reacquired Tyler Nevin so

Gallo to Washington

$5M plus $1M in performance bonuses

Kind of sets the floor if you want an idea of what guys like Donaldson, Longo, Anderson, Winker, etc. should cost

Good deal for the Nats. Most likely case Gallo is a 1 win/150G player with 30 HR, in which case it's not a lot of money and raises their floor a bit so their team is a bit less unwatchable. Best case he has a 2021-esque resurgence and they move him for prospects at the deadline, giving them quite a bit of surplus value on this contract. Worst case he sucks and has to be DFA'd, and $5M is nothing to them.

Belt?

He should get a bit more than those guys. Might get a small raise on his 2023 salary?

Are the Dodgers going to bring Kershaw back? Is the Paxton signing a sign that they aren't - and he'll end up in Texas?

They'll sign him when the 60-day IL becomes available

Yamamoto

Glasnow

Buehler

Paxton

Miller (has options)

Yarbrough

May (has options, hurt)

Sheehan

Grove

Stone

Frasso

Landon Knack, Kyle Hurt, River Ryan, Maddux Bruns

It would seem a bit excessive to sign Kershaw and plan on optioning Miller. But he is Clayton Kershaw.... right and he's hurt.

Every single pitcher on the LAD depth chart, 1 through like #14, is better than Alek Manoah

Probably counting on at least a couple of Paxton, Glasnow and Buehler being hurt when it's time to activate Kershaw

Kershaw is out until at least midseason. Like BTS says, as soon as they can punt someone to the 60-day IL they can sign him and then also move him to the 60-day. This is with me assuming that you can't sign someone straight into the 60-day IL without having to make room on the 40-man to make the signing official first.

Buehler is not going to be ready for opening day. No chance in hell they option Miller unless he absolutely sucks balls in ST. Even then they would probably still give him some leash.

Beltre, Mauer and Helton are going to Cooperstown.

https://www.mlb.com/news/2024-baseball-hall-of-fame-election-results

Wagner falls just short at 73.8% and Sheff falls short in his 10th year at 63.9%. Based on these results, you could see Carlos Beltran get in soon, as he's at 57.1% in his 2nd year of eligibility. Andruw Jones is at 61.6% in year 7. Utley only got 28.8% in his first year. David Wright stays on the ballot, getting 6.2% of the vote, while our own Jose Bautista will fall off the ballot, after receiving just 1.6% of the vote. Others who fall off include V-Mart, Colon, Matt Holliday, Adrian Gonzalez, Brandon Phillips, Jose Reyes and James Shields.

I feel really f***ing old just typing those names. Where has the time gone...:(

Hoskins signs with the Brewers according to Passan. 2/34 with an opt out after year 1. So there’s finally some movement on the DH front.

Hoskins is a really good fit for the Brewers. Think he can have a really nice resurgence there and get back on the market next Season. Should also set the market for Soler and Martinez a little more. Both would be fantastic additions.

Fox MLB put out a chart a few days ago as to where each remaining FA would end up. So far they are predicting pretty well. They have Soler going to the Jays.

Hoskins and Soler are comparable.

Soler is 1 year older

Soler is coming off a good, healthy year

Hoskins has a more consistent track record and better plate approach

Projections comparable

Major difference is that Hoskins WANTS that opt out after 1 year, Soler probably is more concerned about maximizing total contract value

But I feel like this should set an AAV ceiling on Soler

There are 130 Free Agents projected to be above replacement level. There are in turn 14 spots left on 40 man rosters. There are players among that 130 that have probably already chose retirement, but still the 2020 led roster crunch is very real. There are going to be guys dropped off the 40 man who are interesting and some other somewhat interesting players accepting minor league deals.

Of note from those 14 spots 4 belong to the Braves, and 5 to Padres. Now I will always believe that the Padres will do the wrong thing, so I won't focus on them. AA did this last year too and piled up on former top prospects who had fallen out of favour. I don't think any worked out, but it will be interesting to see if they try that again, or do they go a little more Dodgers like and get players that should be starting but will be part-time players in Atlanta.

Either way when I read about the Jays trading Espinal, Barger and a pitcher from the 40 man for a Jorge Polanco, I just can't see it happening. There just aren't the spots for anyone (except the Padres) to take on that kind of a trade

Interesting Hurl. Great insight that I'm sure most didn't know and hadn't considered. It's information and views like this that remind me just how good this board is. Edited by Brownie19

Can you explain the "2020 led roster crunch" part?
