I'd definitely consider Eloy to be our DH over signing Soler to a 2 year $40M or JDM for 1 year $20M....assuming we get Eloy for nothing.

Wow that's a really optimistic Steamer projection. I have a really hard time seeing him staying healthy enough to reach nearly 600 plate appearances to start with so the projection feels pretty unrealistic.

It is just a question of whether or not Eloy is even worth his guaranteed $16M, basically

 

I think the trade would be more like Otto Lopez for Eloy

 

But if you can get a DH from the FA pile for closer to $10M, might not be any point

Trade bait at the deadline I guess. No real other reason to sign him unless they somehow truly think they are contenders, which... maybe they are if half their roster has career years, and somehow their starting pitching isn't an abomination behind Keller.

Meh, most late inning relievers were getting between $10-12M AAV per season. Chapman can still be electric and a huge weapon out of the pen. $10.5M for one-year is a great deal IMO. Pirates likely will use him as trade bait at the deadline. If he has another strong season, teams will be calling to add a big arm like Chapman to the pen.

Chapman probably thinks his chances of ending up on a contender are better by signing with an inevitable seller who will trade him to a known contender in-season, versus him having to make a guess in the offseason by signing with whoever he thinks is a contender.

I’m not saying it’s apples to apples by any means, but say you have a person that’s doing all the right things in life but unfortunately drives drunk one night and hurts someone.

Again, don’t take that as a direct comparison, as of course it’s different in many ways.

 

But in no way am I saying those actions are justified, or excused, but it just becomes a tough situation in how it all goes down. What the punishment should be. In Wanders case I feel a couple years in jail, a permanent Scarlet letter, etc seem to be enough to fit the crime.

Those teams don't have the foresight of having a need for him you mean. It's like being the Blue Jays and going into the season with this lineup. We all know damn well we're going to need offense so we'll just end up spending prospects for something that's already known if we don't do it now.
