G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted December 28, 2023 Posted December 28, 2023 Is this a shock? I mean concerning they missed out on the Japanese guys, this is what was always going happen? Signing Ohtani or not, trading for Soto or not, they were probably making this move either way
connorp Old-Timey Member Posted December 28, 2023 Posted December 28, 2023 He was probably stretched at SS Dude came up as a C, won a GG at third base, then the Yankees in all their wisdom decided he was a CF and SS That’s where you put the people that can’t hit for s*** if you want to get anything out of them. Where’s the wisdom fail?
connorp Old-Timey Member Posted December 28, 2023 Posted December 28, 2023 I thought I was all for pushing Biggio out of the lineup as much as possible, until now.
connorp Old-Timey Member Posted December 28, 2023 Posted December 28, 2023 The move , in a vacuum, is not a “good move.” It’s kinda sideways and slightly backwards when dollars are considered if all you do is compare IKF to Espinal. But, this move can’t be evaluated in a vacuum. IMO it’s clear they have a trade worked out and Espinal is part of it, they knew they needed to find a replacement, and it just happens that the signing is being announced before the trade. At least, I hope that’s what it is because if that’s not the plan, the move doesn’t make a ton of sense. A trade for what? An underperforming, low ceiling RP or something? Trade for that to pay a bench guy $17m that’s a marginal improvement to what you traded?
connorp Old-Timey Member Posted December 28, 2023 Posted December 28, 2023 Not sure what to tell ya, bro? He's an elite left side infielder, look it up. We now have 4 players on the MLB club that can catch... Ah Spanky with the pom poms. Every time I think you’re the biggest douche I know, you one up it
gruber92 Old-Timey Member Posted December 28, 2023 Posted December 28, 2023 Why do fans have such a hard time chilling out until the end of the off-season? Outrage on Dec 27th before you have any idea what other moves will be made or what role IKF will play on this team is pretty stupid. What's actually pretty stupid is that the role IKF will serve could have been filled internally without having to shave $7.5M annually for TWO years. Seriously though, Lantigua will give you the same if not better value at league minimum.

Outrage on Dec 27th before you have any idea what other moves will be made or what role IKF will play on this team is pretty stupid. Of course. The off season isnt complete. Some fan's reaction's are related to their perception of the last few seasons and a number of other things including heightened expectations surrounding the hunt for Sho and Soto and other big names Jays were in on or rumored to be in on (whether true or reporter's ********). While not "outraged", I happened to really hate watching IKF play when he was in pin stripes and I am really not looking forward to 2 seasons of him here. I get he is a glove and Espy sucks, but it sticks in my craw having to pay that kind of depth coming off a 0.2 WAR season 2/15. I dont know what the budget is other than what Shapiro said but we have spent $30M ish AAV on OF and IF D and a set up man coming off elbow surgery - so far. I still think a more major move via trade is in the works (that may or may not happen) and we pick up a Hoskins or a JD type bat.
wilko Old-Timey Member Posted December 28, 2023 Posted December 28, 2023 It's cool the Jays were able to lock up Joe Panik again.

On the flip side, I enjoyed seeing IKG play in pinstripes as he was a fine contributor to those god awful lineups they would toss out there.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted December 28, 2023 Posted December 28, 2023 It might be that they think ikf is a breakout candidate bc of his exit velo increase Yeah I think this plays a part. Atkins doesn't mind overpaying in years, dollars, or both for players he thinks the org can fix. Smoak was one, Kikuchi a more recent one. I think IKF having an extra gear offensively is a huge stretch and the Jays will be grateful to get a 2 WAR combined out of him over the next two years, but I don't think Atkins makes this type of move hoping he's a seldom played depth piece. For better or worse, he's getting 400+ PA. Whether that's as a bench player or starting 3B is the question. I really hope it's not the latter.

Harder than 2023 Kirk. Even with Biggio. Much better than KK, Espinal, or Whit There's 12+ homers in this useless bat!!!!! Edited December 28, 2023 by Laika

He's dogshit. 6.8 mil of free agent dollars should have been allocated to premium free agents. Martinez, Schneider, Biggio, Espi, Barger, Horowitz, clement, Lopez, Palmegiani. They have cover for 2nd, 3rd, outfield. This front office is too stubborn to realize Varsho is never going to hit. This team needs offense.

TheHurl Site Manager Posted December 28, 2023 Posted December 28, 2023 Ross exists on a different frequency that we yet to grasp. Many here have grasped it and given pretty good explanations. He values depth, he values floor, he values value whether it comes from the bat, glove or legs. He also likely believes the offense is good enough, it needs improvements from the players

And what value do Martinez, Schnieder, Biggio, Barger, Horowitz, and Palmegiani have when they are not hitting (all of which have either not proven they can hit, or have shown an ability to not hit for extended periods of time)? If any of the guys show an ability to hit for more value than IKF's glove they likely get playing time. This is the exact definition of raising the floor. IKF is now the floor. The other guys have to show an ability to be better than that to get PT. The coaches (and this may be the flaw) have to use the data they have and give the people showing batting improvements the opportunities. Essentially if you are pro-internal options. You should like the IKF move. Your hatred for Varsho there is nothing I can do for you there. If you can't see what his and KKs glive has done for the Jays run prevention, than I think you should consider a different sport. Maybe a 1 on 1 sport

Jays333 Verified Member Posted December 28, 2023 Posted December 28, 2023 Atkins- Trades number 1 catching prospect in the league for Dalton f***ing Varsho. - Devises insane plan to pull a red hot hot Berrios after 3 innings and s*** the bed in yet another playoff game - Gets used like a fiddle for Ohtani's camp as leverage - Resigns KK and signs this guy in what is clearly a continued approach in run prevention when this teams needs are obviously power and offense Its not been a good couple of years for Shatkins thats all ill say.

No one is questioning that. He's not a very good hitter. I don't think he will be a good hitter. He has too many holes. I think there's still trade value. People who think they can fix him. His contact rates just aren't there. I would love to see him traded. This team needs offense. I'd rather sacrifice run prevention for adding runs scored. We gave up 5 runs in 2 games in the playoffs and lost both due to a lack of offense. I also acknowlege we're not going to trade him. We're going to sign a DH and run the same team as last year out with IKF replacing Chapman and minus Hicks. That's depressing.

We can’t go one way or the other, we need both to be sustainable winners.
